How many have ever visited this hallowed ground?
Sorry for the sideways and bad photos, tried everything to get them straight, but you might guess that this is the tomb of Chesty Puller at Christ Church Parish Cemetery in Saluda, Virginia. As a Marine, I always feel compelled to stop by when I am anywhere near and pay my respects to one of the greatest Marines in history!

Thanks LBB. Although not a Marine I am a member of the Marine Heritage Foundation. "Chesty" was know as a Marines Marine. His last battle in the Pacific was Peleliu, a #### hole. He was sent back stateside to train more Marines. He was also heavily involved in Korea at the battle of Chosin Reservoir. He was told that they were surrounded in typical fashion he said "Great that means you can shoot those #astards in any direction".

You are correct about Peleliu.
The assault on Peleliu coincided with a sister assault on nearby Angaur. It was thought that Peleliu would be lightly defended and Anguar more so. Unfortunately, MilInt got it wrong and bassackwards.
My father was a tank commander in 710th Tank Div. and his tanks were assigned to 81st Infantry to lead the assault on Angaur, while 1st Marines led by Chesty Puller were assigned to Peleliu. 1st Marines on Peleliu ran into a snake's nest and were absolutely slaughtered while the previously battle-untested 81st Inf. on Angaur secured that island in a few days.
Dad was barely missed by a sniper round that exploded on the turret hatch behind him and sent a bunch of shrapnel into his back. His loader passed him a carbine and the sniper was "disabled".
The medics got Dad patched up and he was given orders to load his tanks back on the ship and proceed to Peleliu to support the 1st Marines. I think they arrived just in time to save Col. Puller's behind, because the Marines were surrounded and had taken in excess of 50% casualties. If not for the previously inexperienced 81st Infantry, I doubt Col. Puller would have survived.

It's almost shameful to realize that the original plan was to bypass those two islands, but it was decided that the troops needed some "experience" before they went on to get killed in any assault on Japan>

I have a lot of friends who were Marines..my father-in-law was a marine
in WW11 and my wife's uncle who was a Korean War vet with a Purple heart.
I once told a couple of marine buddies who were on a Navy carrier which
had a detail of 57 Marines that were over the brig and security. I said
do you guys know why 57 Marines are on the carrier...answer of course was
yes
Answer was wrong. The reason is so the sailors will have someone to dance
with.Of course I got an a$$ whooping for that.I still have respect.

Yep, I can believe you since I looked over from the Marine base and could clearly see the Fish Camp Restaurant location which you live a block away from.
Hey, wish we could have met up there for an IPA that we had planned to do 2-3 years ago but work prevailed.

I never played there; was a but preoccupied at the time 😄. That said the course in Hawaii at Kaneohe Bay was amazing. I just recall one of the last holes being right near a large cliff over the ocean. GORGEOUS!. S/F!

Questions for Marines ...... or anybody!
Top photo is my Marine Corps collection of shooting badges. Has any one ever seen a Marine wearing any of these badges on their uniform ....... all are authorized.
Any guesses where this flag is from?
Third photo is football related (so wrong bored moran does not apply). The Marine in the second row fourth from left is a South Carolina native, James T. Moore, Citadel grad who went on to earn three stars and become Commanding General of Marine Aviation in the Pacific in WWII. He is my sister-in-law's uncle.
