Watching Pitt and their mostly empty stadium

Nov 14, 2019, 8:49 PM

Such a bad look for ACC...why did we ever let Pitt in? They are not a power 5 program...should have stayed as a group of 5.

Doesn’t help that the Steelers are playing tonight as well***

Clemson doesn't care about basketball....as evidenced by Brown-L getting 14 years.

I travel up North for business and absolutely nobody up there gives a crap about college sports. It’s all pro sports for them. The ACC expanding into the NE to capture market share on TV was a joke.

WVU was never a consideration due to academics. Put Navy in and maybe you have the proper mix.

West Virginia being snubbed by the ACC

Nov 15, 2019, 2:42 AM

. . . had nothing to do with "academics" & everything to do with being in a small-population state without any large teevee markets.

This notion that WVU is somehow substandard academically is just complete BS anyway. Attending college at WVU is just like attending college anywhere else. Your education us what you choose to make of it, whether you're at Princeton or Penn State or Podunk U. The ACC is a healthy mix of elite private schools, religious-affiliated schools, land-grant schools & state so-called "flagship" schools. Every school has its own niche in the higher-education industry, has its particular mission. WVU's mission is to serve the people of West Virginia through education, research & public service. Just because their mission doesn't center on rich kids from out of state doesn't mean anything as to the quality of the college experience it offers.

In any case, what the ACC needs is football credibility, not "academic" credibility. WVU has a winning football history, an avid fan base that travels well, & an unquestioned commitment to big-time athletics. Best option available if/when expansion comes back around.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I completely agree and considered it an elitist snub

Nov 15, 2019, 5:49 AM

that Clemson should have called out, rising to WVU's defense.

15 years later it’s easy to pick it apart. But at the time the play was for Miami ands it’s FB rivals. Syracuse, VTech, and BC.

At that time those schools had a string of success we could only dream of under Tommy B.

UM needs to get back as well as VT and FSU to regain some clout for the conference.

If we had 4 in the top 25 each year the conversation and critiques would be much different.

I studied in Philadelphia for a year and you are exactly right, at least as to college football. moving further inland there is support for Penn state, but from dc to Boston college football means nothing.

Um, I think northern fans care about college football. Penn State, Ohio State, and Michigan all put more than 100,000 fans in the stadium.

That's odd since Pitt is one of 3 possible teams to win the Coastal. They have to win out though.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Geez..don't tell me Clemson has to play Pitt again in ACCCG!

Nov 14, 2019, 9:20 PM

What a lousy game last year!

Horrible scheduling for the NFL to drop a Steeler game right on top of it. The irony that Packer called out on his show is that Thursday night used to be college football night, and often an ACC Thursday night until the NFL saw that they could make money based on college football’s demonstrated success.

It makes me appreciate how our athletic dept sometimes offers free or greatly reduced basketball tickets to kids in upstate school districts during Christmas break. It's great public relations, at least brings in concessions revenue, and saves the embarrassment of all those empty seats on TV.

Well they did beat us in Death Valley not too long ago and almost knocked off Penn St. on the road this year.

They are most certainly a P5 program.

Still can't believe Pitt chose to tear down their on-campus

Nov 14, 2019, 10:32 PM

stadium rather than refurbish it. It was rundown, but it had a classic look and was really beautiful. They should have fixed it up. It would make all the difference in how their program is perceived if they had that on-campus stadium, not to mention their attendance would be much better.

I would feel much better about Pitt being in the league if they had an on-campus stadium. I know Miami doesn't, but hey they are Miami and the canes are the canes. Although if they had a little on-campus deal in Coral Gables, say 50,000, that would be awesome. That will never happen though as the real estate just isn't there and if it were it would be to expensive. Not to mention the people of Coral Gables would die before they allowed a stadium, traffic, etc.

Re: Still can't believe Pitt chose to tear down their on-campus

Nov 15, 2019, 3:12 AM

They chose to tear it down & share Heinz Field with the Steelers because land is so scarce around their campus. Though not downtown, their campus is in a pretty well-off part of the city, adjacent to Carnegie-Mellon University & the Oakland/Shadyside neighborhoods. Pitt is a prestigious research university with a rich history, but unfortunately for them they have literally no room to grow but up.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

They aren’t nearly as bad as you make them out to be.

Nov 14, 2019, 10:48 PM

They won the coastal division last year, and have had some good teams and players in their history. They have also had some very good basketball teams over the past 10-15 years, have some good Olympic sports, and are a good school.

The ACC could’ve done a LOT worse. I’d much rather have Pitt than a lot of schools people routinely suggest here as desirable ACC additions.

Exactly. We could have ended up with a women’s basketball school (not that there’s anything wrong with that) like USuCk

Agreed. At least they have the Marino, Dorsett factor.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Pitt and Syracuse should not be the ACC.

Nov 14, 2019, 11:11 PM

They don’t fit. That is all.
