These "Portal Jumpers" I Don't Think Realize They Are

Why do you think Sports Management is not a worthy degree? Do you think Parks Recreation and Tourism is a worthy degree?

I’ve never been asked what my GPA was at a single job interview. I have a Business Admin degree with emphasis in Marketing & Management. I hit my career goal in earnings in a single year when I was 34. Just sayin…..
Also, I saw something that showed over 70% of millionaires in the USA graduated with C GPAs which is anything in the “2’s”

LOL they are hiring like crazy. Anyone that wants to work gets a job. This isn't 2009-2012. Companies are competing for graduates, not the other way around. Our entry level pay has gone from $50k to $67k in the last 7 years.
I graduated in 2012 and it took forever to find an opening but not a single person asked for my GPA.
I got a civil engineering degree but work in construction. Every GC in town would hire me and not a single one would ask me a GPA. The ones that know of me probably wouldn't even need a resume.
I'm involved in hiring sometimes and would never ask for a GPA if it wasn't already on the resume. I would rather have a kid with a 2.5 and 3 months interning than a kid with a 3.5 and no internship experience. The type of degree is more important than the grades.

That company didn't have to ask for your GPA. They got it from your school records. I'll bet they checked.

I've worked in supply chain management for 13 years for fortune 15 companies. Moved around a few times about every 3-4 years for a better job. Not once has anyone asked me my grades or even my major. I cant believe people believe this crap. At the end of the day people either want to work with your they dont. And if they just dont like you they will give you some BS excuse just to get you out the door.

What field does this even exist in?

Many fields right now would hire you with "some college" even if you flunked out because they are so desperate for people. Even more would hire anybody with a degree even if it came from an online no-name school. A student athlete with a degree is going to have an excellent shot at a job regardless of GPA unless their focus is WAY too narrow in jobs.

Dude, it matters on your first job. Most companys care about your GPA and where you earned your degree. The company that hired me out of Clemson REQUIRED a GPA over 3.2. Getting that first job with that great company set me out on a solid career path. It made ALL the difference.
GPA matters!

PRTM? It has some value but I wouldn't want my kid doing it. It does a terrible job in career placement and is mainly used by our athletes to shelter their GPAs. Some people succeed coming out of the program, just as some drama majors actually hit it big. But you can't look at outliers, and have to look at the median student when judging a degree's value. So I guess my answer is not really.

probably true for most, but not all.
Jermaine Thomas portaled from UGA where he was at best a part time player at DE and went to FSU where he became a mid first round pick in only one year. He made millions thru the portal.
Don't get me wrong. I don't like the portal. I wish it didn't exist. But, some players and some schools are using it to great advantage.

Why would NFL teams care if college kids transfer? It didn’t seem to hurt Fields in the draft. It didn’t seem to hurt Chase in the draft that he sat out last season. NFL players play with contracts so it’s not like NFL teams are concerned about players just up and going to another team.

You're right if you're an entrepreneur, but other than that, that is entirely false. Grades stop mattering after a time, but where you went to school always matters, especially if you're in a professional field. A Charleston School of Law grad is going to hit their ceiling pretty hard and no matter what they do, won't be able to get past a certain level. A Harvard Law grad is entirely different. It's not different for business majors. You get your MBA at a school like Clemson or South Carolina (despite their fake "International Business" degree), and see how your career shakes out compared to M7 graduates.

..... said the dude with a LOW pulse.
I'm gonna hire a Clemson grad with a 3.5 GPA way before I hire a 2.5 grad from Phoenix University.
That is the real world.

If they’ve been through the portal AND they are on an NFL evaluator’s radar - then most likely using the portal served the player well.
As a result, I don’t think it will send any signal to an NFL team.
The exception are those players who transferred more than once. In that case, the evaluator may take a closer look, maybe.
It’s like sitting out bowl games. Unless it is for the playoffs, I don’t think the NFL gives a poo.

and character explorations of how a player impacts the locker room. Using portal sends a signal that may be interpreted negatively as player not honoring commitments and have fortitude. Count the number of NFL busts or underperforms that are not talent related.

Sending a strong signal to NFL teams and in the long run their short-sighted actions might end up costing them greatly. A lot of these kids are going to end up significantly disappointed, I hope they all get solid degrees and have plan B. Nobody will pay them any NIL $$ when they have a 2.5 GPA in Sports Management and have to compete in the real world job market.
Crazy how many Clemson graduates to include myself got a job in their chosen field? I was a Zoology major. I spent 20 years in the USMC. I had a GPA over 3.0 but nobody ever asked me about my GPA.
It did not stop me from being selected for promotion or going to the Naval War College to get an MA in National Security and Strategic Studies.
These players have been taught to stay focused and driven. They have had to analyze offenses and defenses. Dabo and his staff have shown them to be devoted to family and faith. If they use the skills they have learned at our university, they have a great chance of being successful.

Depending on the field GPA does matter
Dec 17, 2021, 11:38 AM
|

If you want to be a lawyer, doctor or dentist you're probably not getting into post graduate with a sub 3.0 GPA (3.5 or higher for doctors and dentists). If you want to go to grad school you usually need a 3.0 or better.
Depending upon your field (such as Accounting) you probably need a 3.0 or better to get a GOOD first job. After that no one asks but a good first job usually leads to a good second and third faster than a bad first job.
