Old school Uniforms thoughts

Nov 5, 2014, 1:14 PM

I might be old school(92') but, I'm proud that Clemson hasn't been convinced to change their uniforms to the new age crap! Whether to sell to recruits or not, tradition is much better than a passing fad. Thoughts

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I completely agree.***

I love our tradition ... But I think the time will come for an alternate uniform .... It should be limited to one game per season ... I don't know though.. Should it be a less significant game or for the gamecocks?

Never a purple helmet .....ever.

And our "purple out" doesn't count as an alternate because we've had it a long time ...

I would like to see a matte version of our current helmet ... Or a matte white helmet with an orange paw and orange stripes .... One day

I'll get behind any uniform choice, anyway! Go Tigers!

I'd love to see some throwbacks with the UCLA stripes and the orange helmet with the white C that resembles the bears logo. Anyone with a picture of those?

Oregon went with splash to get attention and now they are known for that. Maryland is trying to copy it, but they just accomplish the ugly.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Maryland has no hope...they'll always look like a walking

Nov 5, 2014, 2:01 PM

McDonalds advertisement. Some of Oregon's unis look pretty awesome. And if they went with a splash to get the attention, did it pay off some years down the road with a playoff birth? WORTH IT!

I like our Unis and really don't care if we never change. But I really don't mind the idea of bringing something different out once in a blue moon. I think next season will be special. I really think we'll be sitting undefeated this time next year...maybe then we'll break out the all orange or something.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'm not knocking them

Nov 5, 2014, 3:56 PM

I think it was marketing genius. They needed a splash to get on the national scene and it worked for them. Their "gaudy-ness" story is much like the story of how we got the Paw.

In fact, my kid has clothes from 2 schools, Clemson and Oregon. While nobody looks good in highlighter yellow, there are a ton of kids at his school that know about Oregon just because of their brash uniforms.

Nov 5, 2014, 2:30 PM [ in reply to That has become their "traditional" uniforms ]

I believe they currently have in excess of 500 different uniform cobminations from which to choose on gamedays.

Most normal teams like Clemson with three color combinations (excluding the helmet), have nine.

Nov 5, 2014, 3:18 PM

minus the tear-away material. I think if you actually put the current jersey beside the early 80's style, you would see a huge difference. I think a lot of people would like that look from time to time.

One change I'd like made to the current uniforms...

Nov 5, 2014, 3:27 PM

Is a purple stripe on the pants. I love the classic look Dabo has brought back. I think the Orange on white is one of the best uniforms in college football.

I do not like that the White pants only have two Orange stripes. I think there should be a Purple stipe in between. Like the below picture.

I would also like it if Dabo mixed it up a bit more to bust out the purple alternates more frequently. Not like how it was with Tommy Bowden, but one road game a year, we should wear purple pants / white jerseys.

Here is the White pants with a purple stripe, but, on these, it's two purple, one orange. I'd reverse that to make the purple in the middle with the orange on the outsides.

I would love for Clemson to have an alternate uniform

I take pride in the fact...

Nov 5, 2014, 7:56 PM

...that we have not given in to this "let's see how cool we can make our unis look while really altering them so much that no one can even make out what the heck is going on" nonsense.

One of many recent examples is Louisville's look vs FSU. The announcers could barely make out the jersey numbers and commented on it during the broadcast. I had to squint to even see the cardinal head on the helmets.

If I ever have to squint to make out the Paw on our helmets, I will go insane. No thanks.

Purple was never one of our colors

Nov 5, 2014, 8:08 PM

It was orange and navy blue. We used to wear navy blue basketball uniforms as recently has the 80s. Check out the 86 ball team picture-navy blue unis. Baseball hats and jerseys used to be navy blue. It was like that with all our teams until Hatfield broke out purple against NC state and then the university seemingly just went with it. All my Clemson stuff from the eighties is orange and navy, i.e shirts, jackets, pennants, etc. There was no purple to be found because it was not our color

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Purple was never one of our colors

Nov 5, 2014, 8:15 PM

The blue in the 80s is actually an enigma. For whatever reason we wore navy even though purple was a school color long before and wore it in the 50s.

My personal thought is the purple was hard to maintain with washes

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Find me anything Clemson related before '92

Nov 5, 2014, 9:09 PM

Clemson wore purple jerseys, not pants against California when Ken Hatfield was coach in the early 90s. Last and first time Clemson wore all purple prior to Sat. was in 1939.

I have a button/pin with orange and purple ribbon on it from way back. I think it is from a SC game. I would say it is from the late 60's. Also have a tigerrag with purple paw on it

Would like to see a retro 80's look like the attached pic. Narrow stripes on the pants, bolder numbers with wider spacing, paws on the pads, numbers on the sleeves.

Another option is all white road unis and helmets with no purple accenting at all---just simple white and orange. Reverse it for home. Orange with white numbers and stripes and no purple at all.
