There is one thing holding CFB up and it ain't going away

It is the 3-year rule. It's part of the CBA between the NFL and NFLPA.

The NFL likes it and the NFLPA has had no desire to change it. It has successfully withstood legal challenges.

Despite all the wailing and hand-wringing, NIL won't kill CFB. Neither will the transfer portal.

However, if CFB were to follow basketball and reduce the 3 years down to 1 year, CFB would be damaged irreparably.

NIL and the portal will settle down into something predictable in a few years. Coaches and programs will be able to plan accordingly. The sport is changing but will be fine as long as the 3-year rule remains in place.

I have to agree that the portal will calm down - after kids

After 3 years very few kids will jump into the transfer portal unless they already have a landing spot. Many of the current kids will never get another shot at college football. Such is life. Once you make a decision you have to live with that decision. Very few do-over in life.

The portal may calm down IF enough of these kids see that

the majority of those entering the portal don't get picked up at other schools (according to SEC Commissioner 84% of athletes who entered the portal last year are still there) AND that even fewer than 2% of portal jumpers ever make it to the NFL.

I have never seen ANY graduating high school senior or freshman college football player that could make it in the NFL. That includes DW4, TL16 or any other great young player. The NFL is a lot different than the NBA and MLB when it comes to the physical aspects of the game. Take the physical and mental aspects and combine them with the highly experienced competition levels of the NFL and there just is not an 18 year old kid anywhere that can make it in that league. The NFL knows this and is the reason they will not change their 3 year rule...

OP said, "However, if CFB were to follow basketball and reduce the 3 years down to 1 year, CFB would be damaged irreparably."

There is no 3 year CFB rule regarding players going to the NFL. CFB has nothing to do with the NFL 3 year rule.

If the NFL wanted to do so and could get the NFLPA to agree, the NFL could draft players right out of high school and create an NFL minor league in exactly the same manner as MLB. CFB has zero to say about the NFL drafting kids out of high school, after 1 year, after 3 years or 4 years. That is all NFL/pro sports doing, not the CFB.

From a legal standpoint I think the 3 year rule and the 1 year rule both hold less water than the "amateur athletes don't get paid" rule did. The former 2 are clearly age discrimination of adults. The latter should have been protected contract law. I ain't no lawyer though.
