In 2015, President Barker's purist for Clemson to become a top 20 public institution was finally realized. After 6 consecutive years in the top 25 and an increased dedication to academics Clemson finally made the jump. This dedication translates to Clemson's decision to hold classes and keep the university open as frequent as possible. Unlike other schools, Clemson does not give Labor Day off. In addition, when they are legally required to give election day off they coincide it with fall break so that no additional days are taken from the schedule. During the winter, the university is only closed when they are legally obligated to due to the district decision or in other issues pertaining to the safety of students (Power outages, ect.) The academic department is no different. Across the football facility Swinney post the 16 commandments of his program. Number 1 is "go to class and be engaged".
Academics are always first at Clemson, unless ESPN comes calling. When ESPN or even the ACC network wants to host a game on a Thursday night the university shuts down. Classes are canceled, the library and academic buildings closed, parking lots emptied. Clemson will only close the university if they are legally obliged to or Football is in town. On the individual level, even a sole away women's soccer game will force players to miss up to three days of scheduled instruction. (see link for the affect it has on them as students)

For years universities have been prioritizing the revenue and promotional capabilities of college athletics over the importance of education. The money gained from increased donations, applications, and enrollment alone make it an obvious choice, but it has a price to pay. Even if Clemson is being held hostage by the ACC in hosting and playing in weekday games, we can hardly blame students for feeling their education comes second. It is the message we have sent by prioritizing revenue and consistently excusing athletes from class for sports. The universities have allowed money to talk and now the players want it to talk for them as well.

I understand your point that women's soccer doesn't bring in much ad revenue. The truth is they are traveling such long distances due to conference realignment which has everything to do with ad revenue. The article brings up how they use to be able to go in a day or to neighboring schools or down to Florida, but with Syracuse, Pitt the spread of the ACC is much wider and they do not travel with the same luxury and speed the football team might.

UNC has it in with the NCAA. Swofford bailed them out of the fake classes scandal. Nepotism at it's finest.

It's hardly a complaint. I like being able to watch football on Thursday nights, but you have to realize the hypocrisy of being okay with universities for choosing athletics over education due to money, but being bothered when players want to do the same.

I was thinking it would be better to stagger the quarters across various days. A student athlete has lots of commitments and can't be placed with the burden of having to set aside a full four hour block every week to be free. They always say the best way to study is in intervals.

We know that Kansas basketball has a payment scheme. It went belly-up because the FBI is investigating. Now, the NCAA is getting involved. The Ubermensch - Mark Emmert - is getting involved as well.

What I don't understand is why this has to be secretive anymore? GET THE PLAYERS PAID!!!!!! Ethically. So it can be tracked by the IRS. Not unethically so the FBI has to monitor everything going on with the NCAA pay for play schemes. I recognize that Emmert is a prodigious leader and his group of distinguished gentleman and a few distinguished ladies are working their tales off to keep the sport "clean." But my sources are telling me the following: it aint workin'. Let's get our heroes paid so they can learn to negotiate - to have a better life as King James (LB23) has said numerous times.

I'm not sure but I believe that our athletes perform better than the average student. Yes athletics takes up a lot of time but it actually teaches them something that a lot of students don't understand, time management. Read a recent article on Jackson Carmen where he talks about having trouble getting up at 5:30. Most students don't want an 8:00 class and are not going to see 5:30am unless they are still up from thew night before. Yes they miss some classes, but spend hundreds of hours studying with tutors, together and on their own. Many of these kids would not have the opportunity to go to school without athletics, and as far as making concessions for ESPN and ACCN, that money pays for a lot of the resources that help out from missing class. Next time that you complain because their absence was excused and yours was not because you laid out with a hangover, consider the extra work they are putting in. You also might look at Dr Barker's goals, because they also included excelling in athletics. I'm sure that he is immensely proud of these young people for not only putting 2 CFP championships on the shelf, but doing it while excelling in the classroom.

I agree 100%! I am consistency amazed by the work and dedication it takes for student athletes to be successful. I know all football players are required to spend 10 hours a week in the academic center in the west end zone and I can't say I spent 10 hours every week of college studying. Dabo's graduation rates are incredible given our level of success, I believe only Washington was close. I was more trying to make the statement that the athletes, even at an academically centered school like Clemson, who would benefit greatly from the Fair pay to play act can hardly be blamed for believing they are athlete-students versus student-athlete. As you stated that the ad revenue helps pay for tutors, and I believe the star player can see that and knows that the value he is bringing in to the school is greater than his education, because his talent is paying for multiple people to succeed academically.
