The transfer portal is it is set up now is awful for

May 4, 2021, 2:00 PM

college football and basketball. Teams will be actively recruiting players on other teams in-season and out. There will be contact during game-weeks. I mean it's a free for all.

true but its never been good. Pretty clear someone was likely tampering trying to get spiller and did get Bowman to transfer. CJ was before the thought of a portal

Lee Corso flat out said, "what a waste of talent", when referring to Spiller at Clemson. I imagine he got in hot water over it because ESPN has since edited it out of the re-broadcast.

I am curious... What exactly bothers you about it? Its only a one time free transfer. Kids only have a certain amount of time to make a name for themselves. Sure it sucks that it has impacted our team. I also understand the morality of commitment, but it affords kids an opportunity. Shaq Smith ended up getting taken as an undrafted free agent. Wouldn't have seen the field for us. I think we have to look at all situations, not just the kids who transfer because they aren't playing as freshmen.

I know this is the unpopular opinion, and I agree that the rule isn't perfect, but I do think it can have an overall positive impact on the players lives. No one said it was here to please us as fans.

I'm not the OP and I'm also not up on all the rules. That said I think he clearly stated what bothers him about it. He is concerned that teams will actively recruit players once they are signed to a school if they aren't playing enough and try to get them to transfer. There seems to be no downside for teams to continue to recruit other teams to fortify positions that they didn't recruit well.

I think there needs to be a balance to making things fair to players who might have made an incorrect decision or have a better opportunity somewhere else and the damage it causes to teams that spent resources in development only to be poached.

Perhaps the NCAA should count transfers as two scholarship spots to dissuade teams from aggressively pursuing transfers to bolster rosters and only use it in emergency situations.

That would completely nip it in the bud. No school is going to give up 2 spots for one transfer.

Shaq Smith wouldn't have seen the field? Even when both Skalski and Venables were out for a few games? I suspect he might have even been drafted if he had stayed with Clemson for another year!

Agree with you 100%. Would've received considerable playing time even without the injuries.

I think a lot is being conflated between the portal itself and covid provisions that are effecting the portal. The portal was a way for players to announce their intention to transfer to began communications/recruitment. It was partly meant to curtail the considerable contact that was already taking place. Players using the portal were also subject to sitting out a year per existing restrictions. But there has been a blanket waiver for immediate playing - but that’s covid related not a permanent fixture (yet) of the portal. Also, at a minimum there are 40% more players trying to fill roster spots than in any previous season. Players normally have 5 years to play 4 but have been given 2 years of eligibility waivers. High school kids are still matriculating normally though. 7 years worth of high school graduates are eligible to play right now. That’s a huge glut.

Yes and no. Unlike most here, you are correct on

May 5, 2021, 8:41 AM

The history of the portal. It isn't a new concept.. just a new name.

Kids have been allowed to transfer for decades under the same rules. Special exceptions were allowed by the NCAA but the majority if kids followed the sit out 1 yr rule.

Covid was considered an exception for all transfers so the flood gates were wide open.

However, like most things.... once you pop that cork you can not put it back on the bottle. They gave the kids all these exceptions and now they cannot take them back.

The NCAA ...and conferences have agreed to remove the restrictions in the near future. It will turn into a constant reloving door.

In addition to transfers being around for decades, I'll add that coaches rely on many of these transfers in order to open up more spots for recruiting. Sure, a coach would obviously rather hold on to his #2 or #3 QB for depth, or probably any player who happens to be the immediate backup of someone. However, I'd guess that Dabo didn't lose a lot of sleep over losing Mellusi considering our depth at running back.

I'd say in general that if a player is in his 3rd or 4th year and still really only seeing the field in garbage time that a coach would likely prefer to see that player go somewhere else in hopes of landing a new 4 or 5 star player. I know in the past we'd often read about coaches sitting players down to explain to them that they'd likely need to transfer if they hoped to see the field.

I know we've been seeing a bit more in terms of transfers from players who could likely wait a year and be in a position to possibly play more. I'm only saying that it's not a process that's 100% hurting coaches, because most of these moves are ones the coaches are in favor of even if it's not acceptable for them to say so out loud.

I think the big difference for a team like Clemson is with a player like Bowman. I'm not pretending to know his situation, but in the past if a player signed and wasn't immediately happy with his decision whether the reason be because they were homesick, or just not as high on the initial depth chart as they had hoped then they'd most likely have to stick it out because they wouldn't want to sit out for a full year.

I think the new rules hurt non-P5 teams or P5 teams that aren't CFP contenders the most because those teams seem to lose quarterbacks and other key players to the large P5 teams more than any others.

At one point in my career I had companies recruit me two times within a five year span and each offer was a significant raise for my family. I took each offer. Life is short. Take the advantages. The companies I left were unhappy. Why should it be different for the players? Because the system was unfair to begin and now it provides them more opportunities now. They don’t owe the teams. That’s an entitled assumption on part of a fan. The player committed here and bc they used to not be able to get paid or transfer, they shouldn’t be allowed to have choices now either...

Ridiculous. The business and corporate world applies to the NFL and companies and now to college. The system changed. It’s more fair to provide market value to players instead of allowing colleges and universities to have all the monetary and power privileges.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I gotta disagree

May 5, 2021, 8:49 AM

"Because the system was unfair to begin and now it provides them more opportunities now."

How many of these kids would even sniff these universities if the schools applied the same elgibibilty requirements as every other student?

How many could afford room and board, books ...and clothes?

How many could afford nutritionists, trainers?

You , like many, seem to forget the benefits these kids do get and always play the..no fair card.

Everytime this comes up, I am reminded of the 30 for 30 on the Fab 5.

Jalen rose is on ...there starting how tough he had it cause he was driving a beat up accord while he was in school and how unfair it was.

The next scene shows him in Italy with the team.

I didn't have any car when I went to clemson.... never been to Italy.. ...and I had to bust my but in high school to even get Clemson to consider me.

School and sports are separate in most countries. It should be that way here. It’s better. Who cares about education when all you want to do is try for the NFL? You can always pursue education afterwards. I think a lot of people ignore that and try to apply the benefits of a free education that many players see as a distraction.

Let me play football and only that.
European soccer leagues have the best development model. Either progress each year or you’re pushed to a lower division/reserve team (less compensation). Players eventually leave to get an education or a career in an industry.

Sports are for sports clubs. School is for school.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Completely agree. If you want to play sports

May 5, 2021, 9:27 AM

At school..go to university. Follow university rules.

If you just want to play sports..go do it and follow sport rules.....skip university.

But.. that wasn't the purpose of my post. Mine was about the hypocrisy in the argument that these kids get nothing...and are so mistreated...so taken advantage of.

I 100% believe education is valuables i support your idea there. They are getting something for sure.

You and I also agree, were American systems akin to the European models, college sports would never exist as they do in such a grand fashion. Athletes woefully just forgoe school until their athletic careers ended.

That's debatable.

May 5, 2021, 10:27 AM

I would argue the contrary, but of course more data should be collected.

But the "freedom" of the Transfer Portal is no better for the players, in my opinion, than the "Freedom" of a pass for a ten year old to buy whatever he wants in a store that sells educational material...and candy...and crossbows...etc.

Undoubtedly, a small percentage will put themselves in a better position to make the pros. There are Joe Burrow and Justin Fields stories out there. But when 20% of the D1 players are in the portal, I would suspect the overwhelming majority are chasing dreams of playing at the next level that will never appear.

So what are they doing? Chasing "playing time"? Will that really help them in the long run? Are they better positioned from an academic perspective? Highly doubtful. From a network perspective? I can't see how.

I said it a while back, the research would be eye-opening: How many kids stay-put and make the next-level (NFL, NBA) vs the ones that transfer? And more critically, how successful are college athletes who go into the workforce having attended one school for four (or five) years, vs those that transfer?
