The talent gap between Clemson and LSU is massive

Jan 9, 2020, 8:30 AM

Considering every player Clemson offers is a 5* according to the staff. That's a 100% blue chip ratio.

Only 64% of LSU's players are 4 or 5*. The big talent gap combined with superior coaching - I see a huge win coming Clemson's way.

Another interesting note. This LSU team is the least talented team we will have faced for a national championship. Alabama's teams in '15, '16, and 18' all had a blue chip ratio above 75%.

I’m sorry but that’s a flawed Analysis

Jan 9, 2020, 8:46 AM

Evaluating the talent of a team based on the players high school star rating is ridiculous. 3 of the 4 best players on the field were all 3 star players ETN9, Isaiah Simmons, and Joe Burrow. Clemson will have its hands full in this game, just like Ohio State.

Wrong. Read above.

Etienne and Isiah Simmons were both 5* recruits.

Interestingly enough... you can see our rise but also note that we were slaying titans... and always the underdog save for OU and ND... maybe consider ND in '15 as a similar underdog then we surpassed.

There is a lot of information in that graphic.

Two things stood out to me most of all.

Alabama had far more talent (2nd in the nation) than LSU on paper this season and managed to lose to both LSU and Auburn.

Even more so, Taggart's first season at FSU in which they missed a bowl game, was the most talent on their roster since 2013. That is absolutely stunning! No wonder he was fired so quickly.

Re: The talent gap between Clemson and LSU is massive

Jan 9, 2020, 10:15 AM

Yeah. There is a TON here...

What is interesting is that for some schools, more BC are not equating to wins - FSU, Miami, USC... and a lesser extent Washington.

More interesting is how important having blue chippers is at specific positions is more important to "more % of BCers" FSU not having a QB or (really) and O line (kinda the same for Miami). Tua being injured against LSU. It is more like Liebig's minimum. You can have great 5* folks but if your weakness is a hobbled QB or no offensive line, etc... then it is kinda a tough walk.

Finally, coaching does a lot. UGA can try an hoard talent but still can't figure out how to beat a 3rd stringer... but backup QBs have always been Kirby's weakness.

Dang, our coaches are fantastic.

Excellent points.

I think LSU is the headliner for you paragraph about having talent at the right positions.

The have spent 10-15 years without a QB that could use any of the talent on the roster.

Biggest take-away from that graphic for me is as follows:

There are three teams with a HUGE gap on the rest of the field--Alabama, Ohio State & Georgia. Two of those teams didn't make the play-off & had two losses this year & the other was sent home in the Semi's, albeit in a close game.

Only 'Bama has been consistent in getting results from such high talent followed by Clemson getting consistent success from a "lower" level of talent (at least by the metric shown).

Other schools are "underperforming" from a relative standpoint. Given the consistency of LSU's blue chip metric, they (& OH ST) have been "underperforming" the most over the last 5 years--this year being the obvious exception.

Lesson: It's not the SIZE of your blue chip metric that counts--it's how you use it. Oh, and KEEPING it on your team as well. Clemson coaches are the best at both of those IMHO.

You know, that team that beat you 29 snap in Red Stick and that nearly beat you again this year without Tua.

Ummmmm, you didn't bother deciphering the graphic, did you, Bengal Tiger?

Once again, Clemson is playing a team with a measurable talent advantage according to high school ratings. LSU has always recruited well, even when you had no QB capable of throwing accurate 30-yard passes.

Re: The talent gap between Clemson and LSU is massive

Way to put all those NFL scouts out of a job. Now the GMs can just go log into rivals and set their draft boards accordingly. Nice work!

https://www.espn.com/nfl/draft2020/insider/story/_/id/28439834/kiper-mcshay-2020-cfp-national-championship-game-preview-top-lsu-clemson-nfl-draft-prospects

"On talent alone, there is almost no difference. But because Clemson has a younger team, the LSU draft class for 2020 is a bit stronger and will have more first-rounders. I have nine LSU players ranked right now, with quarterback Joe Burrow (No. 2), safety Grant Delpit (No. 6), pass-rusher K'Lavon Chaisson (No. 12), receiver Justin Jefferson (No. 19), cornerback Kristian Fulton (No. 27) and running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire (No. 37) all graded in the first two rounds. I have first-round grades on two Clemson prospects: linebacker Isaiah Simmons (No. 5) and Tee Higgins (No. 20)."

"If we're just talking 2020, LSU gets the edge because of its depth. Aside from the six you mentioned, I have center Lloyd Cushenberry III, tight end Thaddeus Moss and offensive tackle Saahdiq Charles ranked among the top 10 at their positions, though all three are underclassmen who could return to school in 2020. LSU is loaded.

Clemson, which had four players drafted in the top 40 picks in 2019, including three in Round 1, can't match LSU's 2020 talent. I think I'm higher on running back Travis Etienne and cornerback A.J. Terrell than you, though, Todd -- they could be second-round picks if they enter this draft."

Or:
https://www.thehuddlereport.com/valueboard.shtml
LSU with 6 top 100, and 5 in top 50. Clemson with 5 top 100, and 2 in top 50. That's not to mention that players like Stingley and Chase and Marshall who will be among the best players on the field Monday for either team.

Regardless, I think you got some bad information:

"For LSU:
College 247 Team Talent LSU=#5, 7 five stars/44 four star/32 three star athletes. Three first team All Americans [AA] 1 second team AA.

Starting lineups: Five 4/5 stars on Offense [one 5 star], 7 three stars [12 players]. 15 four stars on offense 1st and 2nd string.
On Defense all 11 starters are 4 or 5 stars. Four are 5 stars. Second string D: 10 are 4 stars!!"

"For Clemson: Clemson = #9 team rank; 7 five stars/33 four star/33 three star athletes. One first team AA, 3 second team AAs.

On Offense: 8 first teamers are 4/5 stars. 3 are 5 stars and 3 are three stars. Second team has 6 four stars athletes.
On Defense; 7 first teamers are 4/5 stars. 2 are 5 stars. Second team has 6 four star athletes."

Several things here:

First, what you missed from the original post was that Dabo said after signing day that he sees every recruit as a 5 star when they are being recruited, which is why poster said we have a 100% blue chip rating.

Second, your best offensive player was a 3 star QB. Our best defensive player was a 3 star LB. Our second best offensive player was a 3 star RB that was maybe given a 4th star by one service in the last ranking. In saying that, it somewhat eliminates the importance of your comparison of whose stars are ranked the highest in high school.

Lastly, you did a lot of typing and research to respond to a post that was made in jest.
