The Student Athlete Is OVER

Apr 29, 2022, 1:48 AM

After seeing what's happening with the Miami transfer in basketball, it's apparent college athletics needs to separate from the academic side. We're kidding ourselves if we don't see college athletics becoming like minor league sports.Wrong, right or indifferent it's happening unless some rules and things get reigned in quickly. It will strictly become who can pay me the most, and have ZERO!!! to do with academics, tradition, ambiance etc.

Once something becomes an industry and a financial juggernaught the players should be compensated. How long have we all known that some of them didn't belong in college? If you create a phony course so a low IQ athlete can go to class that isn't academics either.

and hellO UNC..and a zillion other colleges.

Sad but true..many athletes are just that (and not a bad thing) but thinking they should be Students was the bummer that burned down the entire premise which was a farce.

The NFL created this and the NFL should fix it. The age restrictions on NFL players with failing to pay for a minor league system has put the NCAA in a horrible position to defend the student. Let those who do not want to be students go somewhere else. College football will still be successful and may be able to enforce its own rules to maintain the integrity of the game.

If they had an NFL D League and the 5* players went there College Football would lose the big TV contracts. America won't watch actual student athletes without the future NFL stars. I don't believe so anyway.

I would argue you would lose about as many fans as players. College fans generally have a connection to the school that goes beyond the players on the field.

Agree. A game between UGA and Clemson with no scholarship-type players would look more like a glorified high school game but I don't think that would affect fan enthusiasm on either side.

It happened in men's hoops years ago...

with the "one and done, and off to the NBA" type players.

Most of them never even remotely thought for a second about academics. They took just enough "crip" courses to maintain their eligibility for one semester, after which they pretty much just mailed-it-in until April when they could declared for the NBA draft.

Academic eligibility wasn't even an afterthought since they weren't going to be in school long enough to really have to worry about it.
