The State Newspaper better do more than apologize

Sep 23, 2019, 1:06 PM

The awful headline about "Hilinski Hope Sinks" - - it doesn't make any sense whatsoever. No writer of headlines would have randomly thought to use the word "hope." Was Hilinski ever referred to previously as "Scar's HOPE?" Like HE was going to save their season? Of course not.

It was blatantly used to connect the sports story, Hilinski and "Hope" through a play on words - back to the foundation set up in his brother's memory. It's just glaringly obvious - and no BS "apology" from the newspaper's management is going to be adequate. Some resignations and firings are in order here.

I'm a Clemson fan, not a Scar football fan, but there's a time for football fun and a time to call out stupidity and callousness for what it is. It's time for the latter. I CAN speak to the shock of losing a brother, because I lost one about 35 years ago. In my brother's case, it was either suicide or an accident - we will never know for certain. I've always suspected suicide because he was so utterly depressed after returning from Vietnam. All aspects of his life just kept going farther down. By the time he died, he was about as hopeless as one can get. If it was an accident, at the very least his poor mental health contributed. Just saying, my family has been through a similar tragedy, and it's nothing to "allude to" in a joking/satirical manner.

Pink slips are in order here, management included - not phony blame placed on some "inadvertent choice of words." That's a crock, and they insult the public's intelligence trying to palm that off on us.

The ending of some careers - starting with management and working on down - are totally called for. If not "The State" has opened its doors to be closed sooner than expected.

All your points have merit. Next time would be helpful to include context (had to look up the foundation name)...

Where were the editors!? Classless fools really.

I just wish "The State" would move to another state.

When I was young they were scrap paper the sports and comics were wrapped up in. All later used for cleaning fish and lining bird cages.

That was either (1) incredibly sloppy, ignorant and unprofessional or (2) grotesquely cruel. I hope it was 1. In either case, there should be severe consequences.

The State subscribers must be crying "Where is the next Herman Helms?"

Though very sympathetic to your position, I have to disagree.

I dont like The State newspaper and havent for a long time. I have several reasons for this not the least of which is their unabashed promotion of USC to the limitation or exclusion of other programs in SC. However, I have to give the people involved the benefit of doubt (though I would not normally apply this to The State).

We live in such a hyper-sensitive world, one created by news outlets of all types, that I cannot imagine The State as being so tone-deaf as to know of the foundation and using that headline. Honestly, if they were mindful of the foundation's existence and cause for creation then that headline would not only be tone-deaf but absolutely, intentionally and utterly insulting. Perhaps they were disappointed in Hilinski's performance and might have been given to a headline which was less than sensitive to the impact such would have on a college freshman, but as The State is so supportive of USC I just cannot believe they would have knowingly levied such an insult as the headline produced.

At the same time, I do not blame the family one bit for being mad as hell. Not only did The State go a bit too far in insulting their son, but the idea that the family would be insulted over the memory of their deceased son is far from crazy. Still, the idea The State allowed the headline to be printed and knew of the foundation is akin to intentionally jumping into a cesspool - I just cant believe they would have done this.

And if needs repeating; I hate The State.

Whenever an agency or corporation makes a mistake...

Sep 23, 2019, 4:19 PM

... the media calls for the guy at the top to be fired.

Often the guy at the top was not really responsible but the media lynch party doesn't care. They want a head to roll.

It's head rolling time for THE STATE.

Id be very happy if heads were to roll at The State and most news outlets, but I think it is misplaced as to the Hilinski thing. It would be far better placed for simply being an advocate of any number of things as opposed to simply reporting. If this standard were to be applied, journalism graduates would be almost guaranteed a job.

I think it was tone deaf and careless, but I do not think it

Sep 23, 2019, 4:55 PM

... was on purpose.

Editors who create headlines for stories written by others frequently miss the mark as they try to br creative and clever.

My guess is that this particular editor had no idea what “Hiliski’s Hope” even meant in the proper context.

It was Hiliski Hope. It was not grammatically correct. Therefore i suspect a "cutesy".......
