Russia dopes, Gold for team USA

So I’m watching the Olympics and they go to a ceremony featuring the members of the team figure skating event for the U.S. and Japan from the 2022 Beijing winter games. Apparently, there was a member of the Russian Olympic Committee’s team who tested positive for a banned substance just 2 months before the games started. She was somehow still allowed to compete and the ROC won the gold with the U.S. getting silver and Japan bronze. After facing criticism for allowing the Russian skater to compete knowing that she had failed a drug test, the International Olympic Committee opened what ended up being a long, drawn out investigation that took nearly 2 years to have a decision made. Finally, back in January, the Court of Arbitration for Sport ruled that the skater would be banned for 4 years, starting on the date that she failed the test. This resulted in her team event score being disqualified, which dropped the ROC to bronze and bumped up Japan to silver and the U.S. to gold. Both teams were flown to Paris for a ceremony by the Eiffel Tower to finally receive their deserving medals. Go team USA!

The Russians have been doping for years...

Systematic doping by Russian athletes has resulted in 51 Olympic medals being stripped from Russia (and Russian associated teams), which is four times more than the next highest nation, and that number doesn't include the Russian athletes who were disqualified for doping but didn't win medals. The 15 year old figure skater is just the most recent in a long history of such incidents. Russia was banned from competing in Paris because of the war with Ukraine. However, in light of the above, serious consideration should be given by the IOC to banning them permanently from Olympic competition.

Russian athletes doping is nothing new, hence why I didn’t go into the history of it. It’s essentially common knowledge in the sports world, especially the Olympic realm.

What’s funny is that Russia’s (as a country) 4 year ban from international sports competitions, which is what led to the creation of the ROC, was over (ended last year), so they could’ve competed as a country for the first time since 2018 Pyeongchang. Now, they, along with Belarus, got the new ban for the Ukrainian war. However, Russian and Belarusian athletes are still able to compete under the banner of “Individual Neutral Athlete”. There are 32 competing in Paris right now. 17 are Belarusians and 15 are Russians. In order to qualify, they couldn’t have any history of service in the Belarusian or Russian military nor have expressed any support for the war.

In terms of a permanent ban on Russia, I’m not opposed to it. I also think that China should be considered, or at least investigated, especially their swim team. 11 of the 31 swimmers they sent to Paris tested positive for banned drugs in 2021, yet they were still allowed to compete in Tokyo where 2 of the 11 won a combined 3 gold medals, which ended up being the only swimming golds China won. For these games, China won 12 medals in swimming. (2 gold, 3 silver, 7 bronze) Of the 12, 4 bronze were won combined from the 2 Tokyo gold dopers. I didn’t look into the other 9, but I wouldn’t be surprised if any of them made the podium.

Let’s not miss another opportunity to point out UNC cheating on a global scale.
