people in DC want statehood, so

Jun 30, 2021, 8:36 PM

If it is not federal land, give it back to the state it was taken from. Thus, most of DC would return to Maryland. This would be much easier to enact than creating a city state.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Would that remove Annapolis as the capital of Maryland?

Jun 30, 2021, 8:51 PM

or would the nation’s capital have to abide by the statutes set forth by the capital of the state it currently resides? It’s easier to leave it as it is and if you decide to live in the DC city limits, it’s your own fault.

This is the correct answer. Never understood why this isn't considered more often.

Founded on July 16, 1790, Washington, DC is unique among American cities because it was established by the Constitution of the United States to serve as the nation’s capital. You can read the actual line at the National Archives.

Like many decisions in American history, the location of the new city was to be a compromise: Alexander Hamilton and northern states wanted the new federal government to assume Revolutionary War debts, and Thomas Jefferson and southern states who wanted the capital placed in a location friendly to slave-holding agricultural interests.

President George Washington chose the exact site along the Potomac and Anacostia Rivers, and the city was officially founded in 1790 after both Maryland and Virginia ceded land to this new “district,” to be distinct and distinguished from the rest of the states.

Let them unite with California and form their own country. Would be bankrupt in a year.

We’re bankrupt now. -$25 trillion or so. The only thing that keeps our dollar of value is our military.

You are correct, sir, but at the rate Biden is going that won’t last much longer either.

That’s because they mooch off the Federal government money that the rest of the countries citizens pay for with their fed taxes.

Might be good to actually be able to back up your statements.

As of 2020, California was 34th in the nation for reliance on federal monies getting 30.4% of their budget from the federal government.

Interesting to note that SC, GA, AL, TX and FL all have higher dependencies on federal money. Sure seems like those Governors talk a big game when in fact they're taking all the feds money.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

ok that’s easy…

Jul 1, 2021, 11:05 AM

SC budget = $11billion x 32% = about $3.5billion dollars

CA budget = $226 billion x %30 = about $72 billion dollars

Soooo California spends about 20 times more federal money than SC does.

How does that work for back up

California sends $472B in taxes to the federal government

South Carolina $28B in taxes to the federal government

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federal_tax_revenue_by_state

I mean, c'mon. You can despise CA for what it stands for and does, but it is a massive economic engine for the US it is undeniable (though i think you'll figure out a way to justify it's a drag and a 3rd world country)

Re: ok that’s easy…

Jul 1, 2021, 11:26 AM

Again your comparing apples to oranges. If SC had the same population as CA it would be generating about the same in federal tax dollars. Federal taxes are the same per person depending on brackets no matter which state your in.

And I don’t hate California. I happen to think it’s one of the most beautiful pieces of land in the country. Unfortunately the nut jobs that live there and run the state and local governments have ruined it.

"The figure includes all Individual federal taxes and Corporate Federal Taxes, income taxes, payroll taxes, estate taxes, gift taxes, and excise taxes."

It is not just individual income taxes.

I'm with you ... thus a PERCENTAGE basis is the only way to compare apples to apples. CA is a much different size to SC in terms of population, economy, and business development.

Thus a percentage dependence is the only way to accurately compare....and CA is less dependent on a percentage basis. Absolute Monies? Yes they receive a lot more money but thats because of scale.

Do the math first

472B/39.5M = $11949.37 per resident in Cali

28B/5.1M = $5,490.19 per resident in Carlin Cali (aka South Carolina)

Cali is full of nut-jobs but they are definitely pulling their weight

It is pretty interesting that DC residents pay more in federal taxes than like half of the actual states. And yet, they pay those taxes without the ability of having a representative in Congress. What do we call that?

“Taxation without representation” maybe? Isn’t that a bad thing?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: people in DC want statehood, so

Jul 2, 2021, 7:06 AM

Taxes are based on income not residence. In fact, the same people that want D.C. as a state are the same people that want corporations overseas to pay U.S. income taxes. Anyway, D.C. residents do have representation, they have local officials that are elected. If they want a Senator, move to a state; not the other way around. When people moved there, they knew the deal. You know, like when people sign a contract for a student loan and then later want someone else to pay for it.

Re: people in DC want statehood, so

Jul 1, 2021, 9:27 AM

As a former DC resident (move there after Clemson),m I support DC statehood 110% and I am a libertarian.

DC wants representation in congress and financial home rule. Unfortunately, the mechanism in place disallow this - image if South Carolina's budget had to be approved by congress. It will take constitutional amendment but amending the constitution is and should NOT be a barrier. Saying "its the way it has been" is a very weak argument.

Keep in mind that DC has more voting citizens than Wyoming AND Vermont and three that means fewer congressmen and two less senators. Heck it is nearly as populous as Alaska and North Dakota. That is a big deal. It isn't the "land-area" that determines representation in congress, it is the population.

The only other way I can think to solve this would be to exclude all DC residents from ALL Federal taxes. Not playing, not paying. Also there needs to be a change that DC should have full home-rule in times of peace and non-domestic strife.

DC is a downright AWESOME place. Northern hospitality and southern efficiency. Which means it will exceed your expectations. I would return there in a heartbeat and the traffic inside the beltway is no worse than Clemson's. It is just ruined by the 536 (435+100+1) or so village idiots the other 50 states sends to the district. And yes, they are ALL idiots but they normally go home during the holidays so you get a break.

Basically in times of war and open rebellion (civil war), that is when home-rule should be suspended. Then again, that is also plausible situation for any other state, so why not.

Re: Then return it to Maryland at the next census when the

Jul 1, 2021, 11:51 AM

Shrug, but you will definitely have DC residents NOT wanting to be "Maryland". DC isn't Maryland. A lot of DC folks despise the Va/Md folks (THEY are the traffic) and it is surprisingly culturally different to a point. Why don't we just roll the Carolinas and the Dakotas into the same state, no? Same principle really. Same reason. Also, you would have a very "interesting" discussion if the Montgomery County/Prince George County could/would be subject to municipal annexation. Maryland *might* not want it either as the Rockville, Bethesdas, College Parks and the Belts would resist. And keep in mind, that Marylands two largest *counties* are PG and Montgomery so there is a lot of weight there. I don't think you would have an area that is been treated as semi-independent for the last 60 years to willing demote itself into a municipality under non-home state legislature.

to Virginia, so there' some precedent for that process. Yes, that was mid-1800's, but it solves their representation problem. 68 square miles doesn't need to be a State.
