Toughness and Heart - New and Improved Mentality

May 3, 2013, 10:18 AM

One thing Dabo does well is improve on the weaknesses of the previous year. The lowpoint for me last year was watching as the Gamecocks punked Ellington no one ran over to have his back. It didn't have to be a fight, but a simple stand in between, get in their face type of deal. To the credit of our team, we saw that in the LSU game from Nuk. He was jawing with those DBs as he scorched them. This started to change the perception of Clemson being soft to that of having heart.

Next year, different team mentality. I guarantee you that Hot Rod, DJ Howard, Z. Brooks, Boulware, McKenzie Alexander, etc. are not taking that. The Tigers will once again make us proud!

Agree or disagree?

I think there's something to this

May 3, 2013, 10:28 AM

When Duane Coleman slapped the Tennessee thug right before the Peach Bowl, it set the tone. That punk came over to intimidate the bench and Coleman just flat popped him.
That fool must have missed when Coleman KO'd that fat tub from SCAR a month earlier.

I do agree.

I came out and said following the usuc game that it bothered me that no one got in punk ### swearinger's face.

I certainly hope so. I remember the 2004 game very clearly. Our boys were spitting mad when the Shamecocks came over to the hill and taunted us. It was on from that point on. I'm as proud as I can be of the men our team is off the field. They are genuinely good guys and have done nothing but make our university look good. But, I would love to see that fire and meanness return while on the field. I agree with you that they need to get in their faces!

I know as a man that at the end of the day, I have my pride. I think THIS team has that I promise you that teams will think twice before trying to "punk" the Tigers.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Maybe Dabo should employ a walk on or a redshirt

May 3, 2013, 10:33 AM

stud as his designated enforcer. Swearinger gets demolished by a guy from the bench....15 yrds and a meaningless ejection.

I like it BuzzPaw***

Me too we need to start playing dirty! I'm tired of being the classy team of college football.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Not dirty, but have a tough guy like in hockey or basketball***

I think they would be scolded for losing their composure. Unfortunately.

You only have to do it once.

Everyone else gets in line.

So - what we've proven is that gamecocks are a bunch of punk-ass-clowns that need to have their butts kicked.

Let the butt-kicking begin. :)

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Agree, and we have done it many times in Cootlumbia!

establishing colonies all over the world...but it's not as useful in getting your football team ready for a street-fight type game.

Many people arbitrarily assume that punching or shoving someone is immoral, but knocking them out with a legal hit is awesome. Being reasonably violent is not immoral guys. Nobody is pulling out a gun or a knife. Nobody is gang-beating down a punter. Somebody go watch fight club or something.

As long as our players are not looking for a fight, then I totally support the mentality of physically defending your teammates. The rule should be, keep your helmet on, don't look for a fight, but if somebody goes after your teammate, DO SOMETHING!!!

I can't help but think Dabo has all our players scared to death to do anything extra curricular. It wasn't natural to see our boys looks scared when they were disrespecting us last year.

Masculinity isn't totally dead yet. Stop feeling bad about it.

Re: The reaction to the Swearinger hit on Ellington was...

May 3, 2013, 11:45 AM

simply a by-product to the situation as it was unfolding in November.

SC was deep in the process of taking the fight out of the Clemson players\coaches at that point in the game with their steady repeated long drives deep into Clemson territory and the ease with which their defense was handling the offense.

Like the fans in the stands, they appeared beyond stunned that SC was not in fact going to be an easy Duke win...call it a sort of mini-PSTD.

A large part of the blame can be laid at the network of Clemson fans and their media, like WCCP, who had convinced nearly the entire Clemson fanbase that Clemson was going to score 60 on SC. Apparently that belief crept into the attitude of the Clemson players who it appears were certain that the game was finished after Hopkin's long TD catch...the players were posing to fans and celebrating with victory tours of hand-slapping...I actually think that they expected that SC would fold like Duke\Wake Forest and the rest of the night would be a 3-hour victory celebration.

I know that the Clemson fanbase expected it....the self-deception was evident here as posters lamented that they were worried that the coaches would take the foot off the pedal when Clemson scored their 50th point and shopping for Thankgiving dinner on the prior Wednesday...I had two different ladies say to me "Wait till Saturday" in Publix with a smirk and grin...I wasn't sure with the first one what they were talking about then noticed that I had an SC players badge from an SCGA golf tournament on my Adidas cap. This continued thru Thursday dinner with the same "Wait till Saturday" with the smirk from all the Clemson fans to the SC fans.

I see similar self-deception going on with the UGA game now.

You need to land your butt back on the coot board!***

Re: Toughness

May 3, 2013, 11:46 AM

Except for a few exceptions--like the LSU game, Dabo has not proven he can field a physical team. Just look at the games with the chickens the last 4 years. I'm still waiting.
