The psychology regarding Boyd here is a bit fascinating.

Aug 17, 2014, 10:33 AM

Now that he's gone many are desperately trying to down play his accomplishments and highlight his weaknesses. I can almost sense some excitement from posters as they talk about Boyd's rough night and lack of future in the NFL.

All of this seemingly in an attempt to boost their confidence in Cole Stoudt and our offense going into this season. Like some kind of addition by subtraction - except the subtraction is one of the most accomplished QBs in school history.

I find it all really sad. I want Cole Stoudt to succeed because he's even BETTER than Tajh was, that would truly be something. But hopefully at some point Boyd will be fully appreciated by everyone for what he was able to do, and not hounded for the few things that he was not.

IMO Taj was one of the best we've ever had. Anytime I point out a flaw in his play or someone else's it is not in a demeaning way but rather factual. I am most appreciative of all the great times and plays he gave us. He truly is a remarkable young man and will succeed in whatever he is led into.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Did not see Boyd - I take it he had a rough night from posts

Aug 17, 2014, 10:40 AM

I concur with you that I hope Stoudt is as good or better than Boyd on the college field. And I wish Dabo and Morris could have found it advantageous to play Stoudt in the 4th qtr of runaway games last year like they will potentially do with Watson this year.

Still I hope Boyd can hang on for a position with a scout team or try his skills in Canada. Then he can return to Clemson where Dabo will give him a job.

last season. Sometimes they put him in the 3rd qtr. This is starting to get like the Willy Korn saga from a few years ago. Where people were claiming we intentionally kept him injured. You're just making stuff up to fit your supposed viewpoint.

only argument you could have with that would be Steve Fuller. After Fuller there isn't a Clemson QB that stacks up with Tajh.

And, that is the kind of qb that I believe Cole is. He just wants to drive the bus. Nothing fancy just keep giving it to the right guy over and over again.

Last year was supposed to be "the year"

Aug 17, 2014, 6:30 PM

We had 3 games on regular season schedule where the opponent had equal to better talent. We went 1-3 in those games, and Boyd played poorly in two of them. Still a great quarterback, but not the best in Clemson history, sorry, that's just crazy.

It's actually possible to expect Cole to do certain things better without diminishing what Tajh did. I'm one who thinks Cole's accuracy will be an improvement. Also, his cool-headedness. Where we'll really miss Tajh the most will be in short yardage. He was money. Maybe ought to be a fb in the NFL.

under pressure or run the offense faster and more efficiently, etc. He's gotta get into a real game as a starter before we will know any of that.

Accuracy i will agree on, but get out of here with this other stuff before he's even made his first start.

tajh through the ball hard enough though for them to generally be tough picks

tajh through a lot balls in the weeds instead of taking sacks...I would not be surprised if we gave up more sacks this year

We'll have to wait and see, of course, but what I

Aug 18, 2014, 7:20 AM

expect is Cole will find an outlet before either having to throw it away or take a sack. That's exactly why I think this offense will be more efficient. I don't see as many home run balls this year, just a relentless moving of the chains. The one place we may struggle compared to last year will be short yardage.

critiquing him as an NFL QB with downplaying his accomplishments here. They have nothing to do with one another. Its ok to be a legend here and not make it there. Doesn't make him any less of a CU icon in my eyes.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

THIS^^^ . . . . . Tajh was a great Clemson QB. He had an

amazing career here, and he won a lot of big games at Clemson by taking the team on his back and willing it so. He is unquestionably one of the very best ever at Clemson.

It does not appear that Tajh is cut out for the NFL, and it appears that some of the things that he struggled with in college are greatly magnified at the next level. That's not a slam, and it has nothing whatsoever to do with our regard for Tajh or his place in Clemson history, it's just a fact that can't be ignored if we are going to discuss what is going on with him here and now.

For the past 50 years most Clemson folks have talked up

Aug 17, 2014, 11:01 AM

the succeeding QB, even occasionally finding a few faults here and there with the former.

That's because folks hope the next one will lead us on to even better days.

I suppose that's human nature, for we do the same thing in most endeavors, even politics. Yesterday's highly-accomplished leaders become tomorrow's has-beens, as we strive for that utopian world wherein days are full of sunshine and glory...and nights are filled with hopes that the next day will be better.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

There was a whole lot of sunshine on our football team...

over the past 3 seasons.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You are correct, TK.....However, some folks will always

Aug 17, 2014, 11:24 AM

say they didn't catch enough of the sun's rays...and return to the beach hoping to soak up more.

Heck, I've heard the same arguments for years, and even back in my days in the 60's, guys would rant and rant about players' performances...even past players. Then, when game days arrived, all that was forgotten as we headed down the hill to the Valley, yelling, screaming and cheering on our fellows.

That's part of that human nature of which I spoke.

Even among the chat today, the most important thing all of us have to acknowledge is that we're all part of the Tiger Brotherhood...past, present and in the future. And Tajh Boyd is our brother!

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Nobody was quicker or more passionate about pointing out...

Aug 17, 2014, 11:17 AM

Tajh's flaws than I. Yet, I find no joy in Tajh's struggles in the NFL. I brought focus on Tajh's shortcomings only in contrast to Cole's strengths not to disrespect his great accomplishments and certainly not to disrespect the man.

I'm afraid that I helped open Pandora's Box. I just got sick of Clemson Fans dumping on Clemson's offense and QB.

Boyd was the best QB to ever wear the paw, IMO. Know many will bring up others, but based upon how the game has evolved and gotten much more difficult over the years, what he did was tops IMO. The LSU and OSU bowl games were the icing on the cake for his career, he has records that may never be broken unless DW does it.

Re: The psychology regarding Boyd here is a bit fascinating.

Aug 17, 2014, 2:29 PM

Having been a proponent of Cole Stoudt for 2-3 years, and would have preferred that he had had the opportunity to start some games - I'm not sure I fall into the category that this thread describes. I have always thought Cole did some things better than Boyd, but how can anyone argue with letting Boyd continue to start when he was so good? Cole just had to wait his turn. It was a bad break in a way for HIM that he was stuck behind Boyd. That probably had a lot to do with Boyd choosing to come to CLEMSON and win the starting position at QB instead of going to OSU and playing behind Pryor (nobody knew Pryor would be gone so soon). Anyway, what I have maintained is that as good of a QB that Boyd was in college, that does NOT necessarily translate to an NFL career (Tebow says "Hi"). IMO - Boyd reminds me of Tebow, but not as good. So take that FWIW. I simply do not see Boyd making the NFL unless he figures out a way to "play in the zone" ALL of the time, instead of just when he's in desperation mode.

Aug 17, 2014, 5:47 PM

It's wasn't Boyd or Sammy it was the Chad.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I said the same thing throughout his career

Aug 17, 2014, 5:53 PM

Boyd is a good Q.B. with some major flaws. His accuracy is hit and miss, he locks onto his primary receiver, and he will force the issue and make mistakes when he is behind. His flaws are the worst possible combination for an NFL quarterback where accuracy, adaptability, and cool under pressure win the day. There is a reason why a physical freak like Vince Young or a strong armed Q.B. like Rex Grossman don't succeed in the NFL, and Tajh has the same problems these guys have.

Glad he was our Q.B., he is an all time Tiger great, hope the next Q.B. is better.

You can search my post history, I have never for one day been on the Tajh band wagon. I believe he physically was a great athlete. Mentally, he choked in too many big games. We could not count on him in big games. He stepped up on a few occasions and performed. His mental blocks were quite obvious in other games.

As to why so many people want to downplay his success at Clemson. He was one of the best QBs Clemson has ever had. What I don't agree with is that Boyd got rattled in big games. If he got rattled than how was he able to beat VTx2 (when they were good) Auburn, FSU, LSU, GA, OSU and brought home an ACC title plus a BCS trophy. Boyd put in alot of hard work and sweat for this program and should be recognized for his accomplishments.

Agree. Anyone that comes to defend what they have been saying ab Cole should have been in there more and they think that Cole should hand played when Tajh struggled, hush. Go Tigers and go Cole, but at least wait until he actually plays in a game to talk ab how cool and calm he is. It's easy to be cool and calm when you have a 40 point cushion when you come in

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That's certainly a fair thing to say. My take on that is

Aug 18, 2014, 7:27 AM [ in reply to Bottom line... If Cole was better than Tajh, ]

that there was not a lot of separation between them. What Tajh could do that Cole couldn't was get the tough yards when he had to move the chains. Cole was barely 200 lbs until this year. We needed Tajh on account of not having a RB who could get the tough yards consistently. This year, Cole and all the RBs are bigger and stronger.

I'm gonna predict that you will be happy with Cole's performance and may even say we should seen more of him through the years.

Heisman, as many on here seem to think, wouldn't he have beaten out Mr. Boyd the last few years?

He will be a solid leader for this team as we transition to the next superstar, D. Watson. Let's not downplay the success we had with Boyd.

Kind of irks me that some on here seem to be taking cheap shots at him now that he is gone.
