The problem with our new "traditions".

Sep 7, 2012, 2:48 PM

They're derivative. They're not original.

The thing about our real traditions (the hill, the rock, the paw) is they are original to Clemson.

Tons of schools have ___________ walks, entrance songs, etc.

Next we'll have an "orange out".

Used to be, EVERY frikkin' satdee was an "orange out" - but we didn't call it that - we all came dressed in orange and created a sea of it.

Oy.

I've never been a fan of the "walks" myself. Might be the most overrated tradition of any college team. I'm still disappointed that we do it now.

I wish a tradition were to "welcome" the opposing team.

Make them walk through TigerNation on their way to the locker room.

WHO CARES.

We have great tradition at Clemson, you mentioned them.

So who cares that we do things other schools do? We do them because they are successful, players like them, fans like them, etc.

I'VE GOT AN IDEA! How about instead of playing Zombie Nation during Kick Off, lets play Who Let The Dogs Out so that we're unique! A DIFFERENT song!!!

If Clemson ever plays who let the dogs out, I will not rest

Sep 7, 2012, 3:03 PM

until everyone even remotely supportive of such a decision suffers greatly.

Oh, I know, but the point I made still stands. Some idiot

may have run with your idea. You can never be too sure on a message board.

Not truly traditions...

Sep 7, 2012, 3:07 PM

...until they get a generation's worth of use to pass on.

Otherwise, I call them fads.

The stadium setting, the hills, the lake, the small town, the close friendly tailgating, and the hard-nosed football are enough for me.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Agree, a tradition does not end after one generation.

Sep 7, 2012, 4:21 PM

Therefore it takes 40+ years to become a tradition.

I totally agree but too many people love fads.

Sep 7, 2012, 3:18 PM

I have tried to convince as many people as possible that what makes Clemson so special is that we have the most original, historical tradition in the country. Any group of people can copy-cat other stuff, or try to start their own traditions. Those people can't appreciate real tradition and therefore they can barely appreciate something unique and special.

Too many recent Clemson fans fail to see the harm in watering down Clemson tradition. They use the simple argument of "You are too old, or every tradition gets started sometime." They fail to understand that Clemson's traditions were not started on purpose. They have interesting, practical origins, that naturally BECAME tradition.

But lame, fad-loving people are something that Clemson should guard itself against. I chose to be a Clemson man because I could plainly see it was a special place. I wanted to be a part of it, even though I was born in Georgia and surrounded by Gamecocks and Dawgs my whole life.

Back in the 70's and 80's people didn't wear orange to games

Sep 7, 2012, 4:20 PM

nearly as much as now. Lot's of white was worn back then. I think the orange thing is becoming a tradition.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Up until the late 70s that was true but wearing orange......

Sep 7, 2012, 4:32 PM

took off bigtime after that, especially during the 80s - I remember clearly.
