The problem with committee rankings

Dec 9, 2020, 8:06 AM

They always seem to set up the 4-25 rankings based on the future. And even 1-4 sometimes too. Example. Let’s put so and so here because we really think they are better than that but can’t put them ahead of team x because the media will flip out. So because so and so plays an easy game and team x has a hard game they can hedge their bets for the next weeks ranking. But then they get behind and have to adjust for the next week and the next. Instead of ranking teams in the present they rank them (set them up imo) for what think think will happen in the future. The old formula wasn’t great but computers show no bias and numbers never lie.

Maybe the problem is your not on the committee!

The old formula was 2/3 human polls too.***

It's really hard to follow their logic...

OcryO State at No 4 ahead of other teams that have played more games and, frankly have looked better.

Having UGa in the top 10 is the real head scratcher. They've beaten one team with a winning record (a bad Auburn team at 5-4).

Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.

If you dont think OSU is one of the top 4 teams in the country you dont know football. Maybe Florida could beat them but doubtful. I don't see anybody else ranked behind them that would beat them. I would take them to beat ND for sure. I dont agree with Iowa St and UGA being so high tho.

Offensively maybe. Defensively...not so much !!!***

How is Iowa State ranked ahead of Cincinnati and Miami? Iowa State lost to Louisiana. A power 5 team with 2 losses (1 of which is to a Sun Belt team) should not be ranked ahead of a Power 5 school with only 1 loss (to Clemson) or a group of 5 team as strong as Cincinnati in my opinion. I think Cincy beats Iowa State 3 out of 5 times if they were to play. Likewise with Miami.

Do those of you who say they'd rather have computer rankings ever actually go and look at the computer rankings? They still have the old BCS computers out there for viewing if you're ever interested.

Here's one example:

https://www.collegefootballpoll.com/rankings/

Notice how Ohio State is 2nd, the real USC is 4th, and Clemson is 5th?

Here's another one:

http://sagarin.com/sports/cfsend.htm

Ohio State is 2nd in this one as well, Clemson is 3rd, Florida is 4th, Georgia is 5th, and ND is 6th for some reason. Wisconsin with a 2-2 record is ranked 9th. Others of note are Texas at #11, 5-4 Auburn is 14th, 3-5 LSU is 21st, 2-5 Penn State is 22nd, and Coastal Carolina is 42nd.

Correct. All the 'scientific formulas' have built in bias based on the programers opinions of what data gets included, and how much weight each data point gets.

The CFP isn't perfect, but it's much better than any of the other systems.

I would have no real issue with using the old BCS computer rankings to rank the top 4 for the playoff... if we went to 6 or 8 teams, I'd have even less issue with it as things get pretty murky after 3 or so most years. With an expanded playoff though, I think they should have auto spots. 5 - P5 champs, top Go5 team provided they are in the top 15, and 2 at large picked by the BCS rankings.
