The Power of Money

Apr 21, 2022, 1:36 PM

Pains me to admit it, but the reality is that College Football has changed and will continue to become more of a minor pro league. As they have forever done, parents and players will weigh ALL options when choosing a school. But there is a NEW option. Money. It will play a role in MOST of the decisions. The larger and wealthier donor bases will absolutely spend the money to get the players. If there are a dozen of those types of schools, each with 65 players, and they "buy" half of them, that's a total of 390 of the top college football players possibly NOT coming to Clemson.

If you don't think that can have an impact on this game, you're choosing to believe a fairytale. Hate, it. But it's true.

JAY WRIGHT, Head BB coach at Villanova retired yesterday, Guess why, I don't know, but probably about the Portal and NIL. People can say anything they want, say anything you like NCAA or anyone else, the Portal and NIL, WILL destroy College sports, period.

Yes the large and wealthy donor bases will willingly pay - for a while. Then I suspect ratings for college football will start dropping like basketball as the portal and lack of identity of upper class men dilutes interest. You may end up with 15-20 schools whose fan bases still care but everybody else will have checked out and attendance will fall and the game day environments will deteriorate and the lack of fan passion will come through the screen and it will be exactly like the NFL where 75% of seats are empty. Well done NCAA and ESPN and media, well done!

I dont disagree with most of what you are saying but your 75% empty at NFL stadiums is far from accurate. Just about all of the franchises were over 90% attendance last year, most were well over.

If fans are upset it’s always the same top teams in the playoffs, it’s only going to get worse. Top paying schools will get the best recruits and they’ll make the playoffs year in and year out. College football as we know and love it is dead.

Absolutely, when you take 390 of the type of players that it takes to win a NC out of Clemson recruiting path, our FB program will resemble something much less than the teams that Tommy Bowden had while being the HC at Clemson. The only way I could relieve the horrible sadness that I would feel every day for Clemson would be, to get completely away from all of college sport so that I wouldn't have to see or read about the disappoints of a broken FB program that had always believe we could reach the top of college FB with the right HC, and players at Clemson the way it's been since Dabo. All of Tiger nation can already see and feel how so unfair, and unimportant college sport will be for Clemson with what is happening in college sports today, especial when the big and bigger schools get the hang of how to bypass what little rules that are there now. The first and second string college players will be receiving pretty near a hundred mil to field a team of the best 1st, and 2nd teams of college FB, and even if were a program that could afford to compete, I personally would still lose interest bc the fun would no longer be in the winning the way that it has been though out my life time of amateur college sports!!!!

Frustrating as a fan, but if I had a kid who was good enough to play D1 sports and being paid was part of it, we'd definitely be considering it even though we aren't poor and can pay for college ourselves.

Why wouldn't we?

The kids should do what is best for themselves.

I guess the issue is they don't have the maturity, knowledge, and experience to know what is in their best long term interests, but real money now is a big incentive.
