Someone, maybe even David Hood, came on here a couple

Dec 22, 2022, 10:29 AM

of weeks ago stating how surprisingly active we were going to be in the portal this year. They said something to the effect of, "if you only knew". I knew then that was likely BS and now, after Swinney's statement, I know for sure. Swinney is the greatest coach in Clemson history, but I wonder how long we can continue to bleed players to the portal and not get any out. Players that we have developed and groomed to be upper classmen ready to take their place (Bentley and Swint). Florida State is showing how to use the portal. South Carolina used the portal to beat us on our own turf. If that is coach Swinney's decision to not use the portal, fine. But please don't waste everyone's time with BS statements about you know that behind the scenes they are delving into the portal and it is going to be a great circumstance and "if you only knew".

The portal is absolutely not why we lost to the Capons.

Dec 22, 2022, 10:31 AM

Clemson stepped on its own Johnson with golf shoes throughout that game.

All we needed to blast the roosters was an easy decision to bench DJ halfway thru the 3rd quarter.

reason they were competitive was the transfer portal. Take Rattler and wells off that team and we win regardless.

I truly think Dabo thought he was going to need to go to the portal, but more players than he thought are coming back making the portal irrelevant this year.

Re: Someone, maybe even David Hood, came on here a couple

Dec 22, 2022, 10:59 AM

Hope you're right about that. I think we'll have a clearer picture after the bowl. No need to make any public statements that would disrupt the game.

Also 81, that's a stretch saying that's why they beat us. Listen to what Dabo says. Teams such as scar and fsu are rebuilding. Dabo clearly states that's not us. And he's right. He also said (and won't speak for dhood) that we looked at numerous kids. Some that we would have offered had zero interest in Clemson. Fair enough. Likewise, some that had the skills we needed, like the kid Venables paid from Indiana, that we would have taken, didn't have the character fit for us. That's where imo the disconnect may have originated. We were looking.

Hopefully as he said, some Dabo and staff thought may leave are indeed coming back.

That said, on the portal in general, yes, I believe Dabo is missing a huge opportunity to hedge our roster from injury and unexpected transfers by not getting a few on board. There's more GA's in there than just QB's. DE and CB comes to mind.
Another avenue I feel we're missing the boat is the FBS g5 schools. Liberty, Furman both come to mind, as well as fcs teams like north Dakota st, sc state etc that have excellent character fit that are sophomores who have a year of physical and mental growth so we don't have to rely on true freshman that aren't physically ready or game's too fast but forced into action.

The above is where I really think we should be looking. Jmho

Name 1 DE currently in the portal that's good enough to play here. There's several sites keeping track of players in the portal so go find us a DE and come back with a name.

That's not how it's done. You pick a DE you want and get him to enter the portal.

Dec 22, 2022, 1:15 PM

Thank you Reynolds for this. Your comment highlights what I fear is one of the fundamental issues we have with our approach to the portal - if we’re waiting until kids enter, it’s too late.

Re: Someone, maybe even David Hood, came on here a couple

Dec 22, 2022, 1:24 PM

It's also a violation not to wait. Approaching a player who is not in the portal is a no-no.

Clearly, teams are doing it. But I don't expect Dabo to sacrifice his integrity just because others are.

Old friend of quality player at School A calls his friend or his friend's parents and states "we sure could use you at School B and there could be some money involved. If you ever want to take a look at School B, call me (or Booster B.)"

Re: This is how it works

Dec 22, 2022, 7:04 PM

Could see that. Could also see many many variations of that scenario, some less nefarious, which the (zombie) NCAA may deem to be outside of their rules - many of the same rules they’re making zero efforts to enforce.

The relationship building that I believe needs to happen now in college football occurs in the private sector all the time and it’s not always poaching, stealing, or involves some financial windfall. Things change fast for both coaches and players, every season. I have no doubt Dabo and Clemson can do this with integrity. And I believe they will. I also refuse to believe all of our players who enter the portal are waiting to talk to other coaches until after they enter. And I don’t think any less of them. The game has changed and the rules (and enforcement) are severely outdated. If we’re still playing an old game with stale rules we can be missing out on good kids who could both Clemson football and from being at Clemson simply because we’re late.

This guy chose Louisville…..so I feel sure he would have come here if we pursued. He was a productive starter at Stanford and their previous coach had same culture as Dabo. Depending on who all leaves I think this guy could have definitely stepped in as a starter.
Maybe some of the DE we think are leaving will stay another year. Guess we’ll see

So you know all that but somehow missed the part that we have players coming back that were a surprise to even Coach Swinney?

Yeah our model sucks so let's just dismantle it and study the tremendous wisdom of Shane Beamer.

bowlhunter on Dabo Swinney: “His only problem is he has to deal with turd Keller questioning every move he makes.”

How’s our model working in the transfer portal era?

Dec 22, 2022, 7:18 PM

In the last two years, we have no playoff appearances and one conference championship in what is arguably the weakest power five conference. We also have four losses to teams we had no business losing to.

No one is suggesting we dismantle our model, but it’s no longer working like it is supposed to.

Dec 22, 2022, 11:12 AM

working for me-seems to be a fallacy there. I can't tell if you are being serious or not...

The transfer portal is not a guaranteed player solution. I would argue that most of the players in the portal are there because they are not good enough to play at their current school. There could be other reasons, but I would bet that lack of playing time is the number one reason for a player to be in the portal.

My question is, if a player is not good enough to play for SDSU or BFE, why would he be good enough to play at Clemson? What value would that player bring to Clemson on day one?

You said, "I wonder how long we can continue to bleed players to the portal and not get any out. Players that we have developed and groomed to be upper classmen ready to take their place (Bentley and Swint)."

How many players did we lose to the portal? How many players did we just sign? The portal is not the only way to bring players in. The assumption is that players brought in from the portal are "plug and play" and they can be put on the field immediately to help win games. Can they? How long does it take to learn our playbook? How long does it take to learn to play with your team mates? Are all transfer players really that impactful? If they are quick learners and impactful, it seems like they would have significant playing time at their current schools and would not be in the portal.

"Florida State is showing how to use the portal." FSU is 9-3 and has lost to every ranked team on their schedule (Clemson, Wake, NCSU).

"SC used the portal to beat us on our own turf." Are you serious? Did you see the game? I would argue that we gave the game away. Definitely didn't see them beat us.

Your examples of portal success are FSU and SC. Neither of those teams have a better record than Clemson and I could easily argue that Clemson is more successful than either of those teams by not using the portal.

In short, I don't understand your post.

Unlike the coots, we kept our entire class so portal was not needed at this time. Very few schools can say that and it was not based on NIL money either. None can say that to all you cooters out there.

What a lot of people are missing:

Dec 22, 2022, 12:18 PM

No need to pay players to come here. The smart ones know that with 100% job placement is better long term. That's our NIL. Long term thinking.

My thoughts concerning the "if you only knew" may have been meant some seniors are returning that no one knows about. Or, maybe we had some portal guys lined up and current players are deciding to stay instead of go pro.

For the last time you just don't go shopping in the portal and fill your cart up. 10 percent of the guys in the portal may be better than what we have on the roster at any given position. Most of those already have deals in place with other schools. So please tell me why we should take chances on getting players that can't start on other teams? You don't just go in and choose who you want. I wish some of you could get this through your thick skulls. You see a handful of portal players contribute for a new team and you say oooh I wish we could find one of those. Give it a rest I would rather take my chances with 4 and 5 star high school players rather than settling for second string from teams that aren't on the same level athletically as Clemson. Whine on...

You people have all gaslight yourselves up over the Transfer Portal. Every single time you list these other programs that aren't even on our level.

We had a literal turnip for a QB the past 2 years. Dabo has it under control.

The only real criticism to lay the past 2 cycles is the serious lack of Top 300 recruits at RB/WR. Our skill player recruiting looks to have gone down a notch.
