The portal has ruined college football

Oct 19, 2021, 7:05 PM

So much for “being true to your school”. I guess it’s just a bigger reflection of what’s going on in society today. I must be getting old.

And we continue to be organ donors for other programs across America…Mikey Dukes is a very versatile back. He will make another program better.

Kids have always been able to transfer…

Oct 19, 2021, 7:13 PM

The only big difference is they can do so now without losing a year of eligibility.

I think you’ll see a few more between now and the start of spring practice next year.

Re: Kids have always been able to transfer…

Oct 19, 2021, 7:18 PM

Even if they could transfer in the past, Clemson always got kids that wanted to be a tiger and if had too, wait their turn to play..Now it's I play or go..Theirs no more team..it's all about me, me and I

I assume all their educational credits transfer to a new school. But I assume they couldn’t care less.

Oct 19, 2021, 7:38 PM [ in reply to Re: Kids have always been able to transfer… ]

The Transfer portal will make it more critical "not to miss" on recruits! If you offer a kid he needs to be the real deal. Depth may not be something as someone else posted; it may not be a who has any but who has decent depth.

5 star players backed up by 3 star guys who feel they were overlooked will likely be what you see more of going forward for the schools that can get 4 and 5 star players. The 4 and 5 star players who aren't on the field after say their Sophomore season will likely transfer.

Heck, even that doesn't matter( playing time ) look at Mike Jones who was basically penciled in as a starter last year and would have been for this year!
Some of this as it's been mentioned already is just about kids "not knowing what they want"! Maybe even some attention seeking and missing all the love they got during the recruiting process! Where you basically get your bottom kissed(by a lot of schools). If your shallow and realize you have a chance to be courted again, these kids are bolting! A Mikey Dukes who probably got a better offer than his star rating would have lead you to believe - will be something you see a bunch too. 3 star players who go/ get built up at a Clemson or Alabama or Ohio State - "now that kid is a former Tiger, Tide or Buckeye when they enter the portal and they likely go where they want!

It will have to be navigated a lot differently that's for sure!

***on another note: I said this 22 years ago to somebody who just called me crazy and other things. They argued why they liked college more than the NFL on the premus "the college kids care more"! I told him then; and I feel I am seeing it now - "what you see as passion for a school is more like passion for good film so they can make it to the NFL"! If you are at Yale and are 215 lbs. playing LT then yeah, you maybe just really love playing football. So, not saying you can't find any examples. Don't go there; because that's not what I am saying! But, many I would even say most, of these kids who were H.S. Stars(even 3 star players were local stars) all think they going pro! Anything getting in their way of that vision that people around them have told them trying to hitch their wagons "EARLY" to this star player will be dealt with swiftly! Again, they get built up to be God-like at the local level and the NFL dreams begin. Even kids at small schools feel like; "they were over-looked and if they make plays they will get that opportunity"!
It's a beautiful thought to not see it like that - but the reality is many of these kids want to go where they can get the best chance to put them in position for the next level, period.

Dukes, Dixon, Charleston…

Oct 19, 2021, 8:06 PM [ in reply to Re: Kids have always been able to transfer… ]

Even Melusi waited their turn. They were all upper class men. You can’t say these kids didn’t want to be here. But with Clemson recruiting like they do, and having 4 and 5 star players 4 deep, I don’t blame them for leaving. These kids are hoping to make the NFL, they can’t do that only playing 5 or 10 minutes per game if that much.

I don’t think the portal will ruin football, but it will certainly change it.

I keep seeing posts like that. No one likes the portal, but it's reality now.

Clemson will either embrace this, or sit on the sideline while other teams make immediate improvements to their roster.

Either way, we're the only major program that has yet to use it.

Oct 19, 2021, 8:00 PM

Yes it is. Any guesses on why it's hitting Clemson harder than other universities?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: The portal has ruined college football

Oct 20, 2021, 8:12 PM

It’s hitting all the big time schools. Alabama lost ten scholarship players to the portal in 2020. Ten! No one seems to report on that. Saban said the exact same thing Dabo has said about the portal. That a player would have to be better than any of the guys on the current roster at that position ajd be ready on day one to start. He gets praised for that Dabo gets harassed. The portal is going to ruin the game. The NIL is going to be the reason as well. These kids know they can’t get endorsements redshirting so they will want to go where they’ll get the most face time so they can maximize their income. These kids all come here thinking they’re going to play in the pros. They all do. Sadly only 1.2% of all FBS & FCS players make it to the nfl. To hats a fairly high rate of failure but you cannot tell these kids and their families that. The portal is so bad for these kids. They don’t tell you how many kids enter the portal and don’t get an offer? Every year there’s hundreds of kids who were on scholarship somewhere that end up never getting picked up. Now what happens to them. NIL and the portal is what so many clamored for. They even compared the old system to slavery and Said it was racist. What we will see now is far less young black men earning a college degree and far more of them being taken advantage of. It’s truly sad. A beloved institution, college football, is being destroyed and the young men whose cries for the tools to. Aid in its destruction are going to benefit the least? It’s crazy but true. Be careful what you wish for kids.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think what you are seeing with the portal is

Oct 19, 2021, 8:12 PM

that the big time programs are not stockpiling talent. The portal is allowing a distribution of talent making some average programs a little better. Top programs still get there talent. I think it's just thinner. A few injuries and bad years for an individual and that top program suffers.

It's kind of a socialistic experiment in college athletics, a more even distribution of average talent. The top players are going to play and stay. There's just not as much back up...Clemson case in point.

The biggest question is WHY ARE WE REDSHIRTING ANYONE? Get it out of the talent while we can. They are going to leave early for the NFL if they are great, or transfer if they are average to good.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I agree on redshirting. I think that some teams are going

Oct 19, 2021, 8:54 PM

after players on other teams, trying to recruit them to their team and putting the transfer idea in their head. Of course many of these guys have overblown visions of their chances for the NFL, and thing a change will help them get there.

Just like free agency ruined baseball .Before that I could tell you next years line up before this season ended . In Brooklyn , most players lived in same neighborhood and car pooled . Most if not all had off season jobs .
But I guess it wasn't entirely fair fair the players .

You just described what U of SC fans do yearly when they all claim to be Alabama fans!

It's so pathetic! I'll bet the folks in Alabama have no idea they have so many fellow "Tide" fans in South Carolina, LOL!

Oct 19, 2021, 8:51 PM

it's not good. For the player, it's great. Gives them flexibility. The NIL thing is really going to kill college football, along with the terrible implementation of targeting. It's going to become a high dollar flag football, then it will implode with lack of money for the greedy.

When the major conferences get rid of the NCAA which will likely happen with playoffs expansion and Super Conferences you will see some major changes to the portal.

Oct 19, 2021, 9:18 PM

Absolutely. My office has a lot of employees in the 10-20 year and 20+ brackets. We have some good people in the 5-10 and 10-15 year ranges. We have almost no one with 2-5 years experience and the new hires sometimes stay less than 2 months. The recent hires are pretty much the same generation as these college football players who can't commit for a full season.

Re: a bigger reflection of what’s going on in society today

You’re not talking about college football you idiot! If your son had played football since he was 4 & Clemson gave him no chance of playing your add would be telling your son you need to move on. These cleansing that says coz you lose means you need to support well that’s not college football anymore & Dabo needs to smell the roses. When you don’t perform then you get fired. And when these guys have been playing for 15 years & don’t get recognized coz Dabo is a dummy In my boom you would want to go somewhere where you can play. I didn’t realize we had so many backward ### fans to make a statement like that. All I can say is that’s just redneck thinking. Our foot ball team right now is disastrous & you knuckleheads want to act line we are going g to get better. But NO until we change the offensive coaching Brandon streeetwr, elliot & Robbie Caldwell we will not move forward.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: The portal has ruined college football

Oct 19, 2021, 10:10 PM

Has it? Justin Fields and Joe Burrow come to mind.

Do either of those guys have the magical seasons they had and starters on NFL teams without the transfer portal.

I'm not going hate on a player for doing what they believe is right for them and their family and more than I expect an employee to stay at a company their entire career.
