The only coach Clemson bkball coach has fired...

Mar 12, 2022, 8:07 PM

Since Tates Locke for cheating has been Larry Shyatt.

Remember coaches Bill Foster and Cliff Ellis left Clemson. Foster took less of a job at Miami to restart their program, and Ellis just left saying he couldn't build the Clemson job anymore, but then resurfaced later that off season at Auburn a similar program to Clemson at the time.

Shyatt obviously was a train wreck regarding his record and it had to be done.

Now, Forster and Ellis started faltering as far as records and post season accomplishments but were never let go. They certainly might have felt some heat, and concerned that they could not elevate the program anymore.

The reason I state this is Brad Brownell will probably never be fired at Clemson as long as he stays in the Foster and Ellis territory as far as record and accomplishments.

So when I post things about Brad Brownell leaving for another job, that is probably the only way he will ever leave, unless Clemson finally decides it wants to win big in basketball...

I think it ends in a similar way. Brownell obviously isn't as bad the Shyatt dumpster fire, but he also isn't very good

He was similar to Barnes and OP in terms of record

But...when you actually look at the where they took over, the trajectory, energy, and national standing of the program. Those lines went up, Brad's is going down.

Sure if you average out OP's seasons he's almost as bad as Brownell, but he took over a program from Shyatt. Brownell took over a program of 4 star players that carried him to a tourney bid in year 1. How far we've fallen...

Wrong. If we don't make the tourney next year I think he's gone

You're definitely right about that, but it will be framed as him leaving for a different job.

I appreciate you finally see that Brad probably only has so much time to get the job done, but I just feel what is the difference in this year and next year in that why go ahead and pull the trigger now? If Clemson finishes 17-15 and PJ goes down with an ACL or other major injury early just more excuses to bring Brad back. The buyout next season is just about the same as next season.
Very disappointed that the powers at be just said we will be better next season so bring him back. Maybe Neff needs a full year as AD, but just feel like there is no real expectations for the program and to be just about average with once in awhile pretty good. Hope Neff sometime soon is asked in the off season what goals regarding wins and loses he has for the program.

Well, I’ve missed 3 home acc games since the 72-73 season , and attended the acc tourney from 77 - about 2015, so I’ve lived thru some good, some bad and a lot of mediocrity. I’ve known Barnes, shyatt, Op and Brad personally. Served on the university athletic council for several years. Was named “fan of the year” once. I could drop in Bobby r, drad, or Neff’s office unannounced and see them. Iptay rep. Retired from Clemson with a “distinguished service” award. I don’t claim to be a basketball expert, but think my background gives me a pretty good working kknowledge.

Good stuff on the connection to Clemson side. Some of us have also played and then followed the game, Clemson sports, and basketball specifically our entire lives. We don't have first hand experiences from anything prior to the '90's like you though.

We can all discuss Clemson basketball and disagree with each other. This whole who are you and why are you talking stuff is ridiculous. I think every perspective is valuable.

Certainly everyone has a right to their opinion. My question ( and I’m not the only one to ask) to nc is “what skin do you have in the game?” IPTAY member? Tix buyer? Or just someone who watches us on tv? Trust me, those things matter to the people who could actually effect a change. Being a “big fan” is nice. CU and every school needs every fan they can get.But if every remark you make is negative, you can certainly expect pushback from those who actually have skin on the game

I would think that most of us are Iptay members or at least BB ticket consumers with how small the Clemson community is relative to the big boys. Wanting to move on from Brownell isn't fringe perspective. It's been the majority opinion for a while. Some of us are obviously more vocal about this than others. I think if you look back, there are plenty of positive posts about Clemson Basketball, current players, past players, and hope for the future. There's really just one or two aspects of the program that most of us are negative about, continuing with Brownell and AD commitment to the program.

The prob is the 2-3 folks who are constantly negative and I’m not counting you in that number. Do you really think those few folks have ever approached a BOT member or the AD with their concerns? Do you think they’ve ever contacted them in a positive way when something good happens? I’m an old get off my yard kind of guy. I admit that. There is a right way to do things . Publically calling for a coach’s job is not classy and not what a Clemson gentleman does

badge-donor-20yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: The only coach Clemson bkball coach has fired...

Mar 12, 2022, 10:03 PM

I hear what you're saying on that. Most of us aren't as connected with the AD and BOT as you to meaningfully address concerns. I think that most of the poster's you're upset about would welcome a discussion on any of these issues.

I respectfully disagree about calling for a coaches job. A player no, but a coach making over $2 million a year is fair game to any criticism. In fact, I believe it's part of the job. How much flack did Dabo take for DJ last year?

Pretty easy to find an email for those folks with a simple google. Most folks can easily drive to a Clemson event ( prowl and growl, Clemson clubs, lunch bunch) that are prevalent across the state and those type meetings allow you to meet and ask questions. At the very least contact your IPTAY rep. If you don’t know one contact the IPTAY office and they can help you pick one

Yeah, but us sending emails or calling the assistant doesn't hold the same weight as a guy that knows those people personally or is one of the big ones. I know how that goes, file 13.

Disagree a little. An email from someone that, say Neff, has never had contact with prob does mean very little. But if add in I give this much, buy this many tickets, etc it means a little more. If he recognizes the name from a positive email about winning the soccer natty, it means more. If he recognizes the name because he meet you at a function, it means more. If someone is that concerned, you find a way to be heard

I was rooming with an asst. AD while broadcasting Clemson Women's Basketball in the national tournament in Texas. and heard one end of a conversation. The move was that Lefty had agreed to come to Clemson if something could not be worked out with Cliff. Cliff agreed to a one-year contract for a nice figure for those days. They worked it out and we didn't get lefty.

He has had 12 years to build a program. I think that is plenty of time to lay a foundation and build a castle. Personally I think he has had long enough.
