The one area Big Dex needs to improve for our D to be great

Jul 6, 2017, 7:30 AM

Big Dex was really good last year. He was particularly awesome as pass rusher. Not a lot of change or work needs to be done in that facet of his game. However, I think he has a lot of room for improvement when it comes to stopping the run. I felt far too often last year we were gashed up the middle in the run game with him in there. Now at times the LBs were to blame, but often times he wasn't that anchor that you need inside to nullify an opponent's run game up the middle. The guy was a Freshmen so of course he's gonna have to work on some things. However, if he improve in that area, he will truly be the dominant lineman we expect him to be.

Huggins is another guy that had a similar issue. He's great as a pash rusher, but too often he gets his pads too high and gets blown off the line vs the run. He's another key guy as well who could take our line to another level if he can improve in that area.

What do you call this other "level" that's better than #1 ?***

I'm with you. This confuses me.

Big Dex is already the #1 DT in the country. And he blew up and disrupted a ton of run plays. He didn't win every battle, but nobody does.... even the greatest ever. He hit a ton of RBs in the backfield or within the first yard or two from scrimmage.

Snowflake Basher........Out

I think there's serious debate between Dex and Ed Oliver

Jul 6, 2017, 1:44 PM

I think those two are pretty clearly 1/2 though.

I agree,Dex

Is of no value to the Tigers, it would've been better if he had just gone to the gamecocks!

Get a grip!

I'm not sure if you have the eye of the Tiger or not or

Are you just a bagofdooshes? No one is perfect and I'm sure Big Dex has room to grow but for a true Freshlan to come in and dominate like he did is just simply amazing. If anything he'll be stronger and the game will slow down for him. I pity opposing lines because him and or Wilkins will get double teamed a lot leaving someone open to rush their qb.

Evidently, you don't know much about football. Aside from pass- rushing, the D-lines job is to negate the O-line bodies so that the LB's are freed up to wreak havoc on the runners. If they get a tackle in the process, all the better. And last year, they did pretty day-yum good.

This isn't necessarily true because most of the time BVs defense assigns single gaps to players so as long Dex holds his gap then he is doing his job. I didn't see him get moved out of his gap a lot. Now if he gets doubles by C/G or G/T and holds the block then the OL can double to the second level linebacker and can free up a backer but often times his job is to hold his gap. I saw our linebackers leave their gap to early at times on zone plays which freed up the backside cutback a lot. The outside zone stretch has been probably the most successful run play by FSU.

That's right. A big NG like Dex will command a double team every time. It is supposed to make the LB's look like all stars in the middle of the field. If they over run the play or shoot the wrong gap it's not Dex's fault.

Big Dex was good against the run. LBs were out of position

Jul 6, 2017, 9:24 AM

for most of the long runs last year.

Our defense had issues really in just 3 areas last year

Jul 6, 2017, 9:26 AM

1. Linebackers in pass coverage - But that more than anything was a personnel issue because our LBs were short and not very fast

2. Soft up the middle verses the power run game more than just occasionally. That's on the DTs and LBs

3. Too many Pass Interference calls

That's really not a lot of things. If you watched every game and truly gave an honest evaluation of our Defense, I don't see how anyone would disagree. Our Defense was really good last year, but those are the areas that need improving this year considering we likely take a step back in our offensive potency.

We havent been soft up the middle in a long time...***

I think the PIs are just going to happen with BV's def style

Jul 6, 2017, 1:49 PM [ in reply to Our defense had issues really in just 3 areas last year ]

It would be nice if our CBs were a little better at getting their head around, but if you watch a lot of CFB you will notice that very, very few are skilled enough to actually do that. Most just face guard and throw their hands up at the last second.

He was a true freshman. He will get better, but he held his own pretty good, IMO, and he got to do it against some of the best teams in the country.

I think he needs to improve his fake punting skillz

Jul 6, 2017, 10:00 AM

Step it to Wilkins level...

He needs to do better splits. Wilkins does a great split, Dex needs to step it up.

Just replying to the original post, gashed up the middle. What season were you watching? We never got gashed up the middle. We had trouble stopping counters and misdirections, but all to the outside.

^^^ agreed

#8 in total defense, #5 3rd down conversion defense, #3 in Tackles for loss.

I'll take that all day long.

isn't a good thing. I am going to point out the elephant in the room. Is a position change coming?

Sorry, but as good and talented as he is, you DO realize the other school had scholarship players too, right? Not just that, but often, guys that were 21-22 years old if not older, who have lived in the weight room and training table for the last 3-4 years. Then throw in getting top level coaching and practice for those 3-4 years. Make no mistake, even lower tier schools have a whole lot of nasty, scrappy, eat your lunch linemen who occasionally would get the best of a guy even if he was William Perry, Reggio White, and Lawrence Taylor all rolled up into one DT named Dex.

I had a high school coach tell me that Dan Brooks made the statement in a recruiting visit that Dexter Lawrence will be the best DT to come out of Clemson by the time he's done! That's saying something coming from Dan Brooks!
