I’m not arguing for or against the NET rankings but it is the dominant metric used by the NCAA for the tournament. It was supposed to correct problems with the RPI. Specifically that RPI treats all wins and losses the same (other than weighting for home/neutral/away). The NET weights wins/loss with each quadrant differently and weighs in game stats. It has already been significantly tweaked once in its young life. The reason we flipped with VT is because the NET essentially treated that as a home loss while treated VT as a road win. If we hadn’t manage to lose two games to q4 teams none of this matters. There is also the fact that VT has played the 24th hardest schedule. Ours is 109th.

Exactly! Bad OOC schedule with two bad....

OOC losses.

So do we get 2 wins for beating VT on the road?

That win bumped us up considerably. It’s one of our 3 quad 1 victories. I didn’t write the formula.

This is directly from the NCAA website: “ The number of Quadrant 1 wins and Quadrant 3/4 losses will be incredibly important when it comes time for NCAA tournament selection and seeding.” Last year only 1 team received an at large bid with any Quad 4 losses. They only had 1. Since the advent of the NET system, no team has gotten an at large bid with 2. If we finish top 4 in the ACC, I think we’ll break that trend. If we drift to 5th or lower, Selection Sunday is going to be nerve racking.

wouldn't be needed in a true playoff.***

The NET system overemphasizes quad 4 losses.

For example, we are 3-2 against quad 1 teams, and 4-0 against quad 2 teams. Being 7-2 against quad 1 and 2 teams is outstanding.

We are 3-0 against quad 3 teams. However, we are 6-2 against quad 4 teams. Those two losses kill us in the NET rankings, even though they are minor bumps in the road in what is an otherwise excellent record.

Meanwhile, Virginia Tech hasn’t fared nearly as well as us against top competition. They are just 2-4 against quad 1 teams, and 2-3 against quad 2 teams. Their 4-7 record against the best teams on their schedule isn’t nearly as good as our 7-2 record.

However, the Hokies are 1-1 against quad 3 teams and 6-0 against quad 4. They don’t have the two quad 4 losses we do, which is why their NET is higher.

Obviously, the NET ranking is far from perfect since we are 16-4 (8-1) and they are 11-8 (1-7). Plus, we are 2-0 against them.

This is why I’m glad that a committee of people gets to decide who makes the NCAA Tournament, and not a computer metric.

The system's flaw is in weighing

November results on par with the balance of the season. No team plays close to their best at that time...and if they are...they aren't playing in March...with, perhaps, very rare exception. (Like UCLA in the late 60's/early 70's)

Great point, I agree.***

Do you think we looked significantly better than Va Tech?

I think we looked worse, yet

Computer metrics do lend a certain perspective, but they all have their flaws. I like to look at the Massey Composite rating. It really highlights how variable these systems are. It hasn't updated to show this weeks games yet, but coming into this week Clemson's composite was 35, the average of 55 different computer metrics. Clemson had a high of 12 and a low of 71. That shows the variability and the need for a continued human element in selecting the field. AP and Coaches Polls are just based on who has the best records in the bigger conferences mostly with consideration to some obviously talented teams from lesser conferences.

One way they could correct this is to weight games differently as the season progresses. Don't give as much emphasis to early season games as games played in January and February.

All the inter-conference games happen in the early season. If you weight the later games more all you do is erase the gap between conferences making the final selection more subjective. If you don’t want to count early season games as much then non-conference and conference should be interspersed throughout the season better. These games matter. Quad 4 losses are bad losses - regardless of some posters calling them “minor bumps in the road”. Play a tougher schedule or win the games. No one would argue that a P5 that loses their opener to a SoCon team should be in the at large playoff picture for football. And you have the same opportunity to win your conference in basketball or football (soon anyway) to overcome such losses.

I guess the best thing to do in the future

Jan 22, 2023, 4:56 PM

Is schedule as few q4 teams as possible? Seems like it's not worth the risk. We could have played higher quadrant ooc teams, had twice the losses and still have a better ranking.
