The Million Dollar Question: What’s going on with DJU?

Oct 25, 2021, 1:35 PM

There is a lot of blame to go around, especially on offense. Players dropping balls, OL is hot garbage, injuries, play calling.
Why hasn’t DJ progressed though? Dabo, Elliott, and Streeter have noticed his mechanics, footwork, how he doesn’t seem to trust himself, or have the ability to extend the play. They’re coaching, working with him, so why hasn’t he progressed more? What went on during the off season? The coaches have said he looks great during practice, so does he just instinctively go back to his old ways at game time? And we keep hearing there is no “leader” on the offense. This team seems hungry for someone to step up and take the role, why not DJ? Why is there no chemistry with this offense? I’m almost to the point of if TP can come in and have these boys rally around him and be a leader this team needs, put him in. Or Helms, even. What’s there to lose at this point? They need something.

That's why coaches get the big bucks. It is there job, specifically the three you mentioned, to figure it out. And, if Dabo concludes it is one of the other two coaches fault, then it is his job to fix that as well.

What do I think? I have no idea. I did post in another thread that I think DJ makes up his mind before the snap what he will do with the ball. How do you fix it? I haven't got a clue.

But, it reminds me of another story (I think I mentioned it here a few weeks ago, but it is germane to this thread). Mark Richt tells the story.

After Charlie Ward had thrown way too many interceptions in his first two or three starts, Bobby Bowden called Mark Richt into his office. The conversation went like this:

Bobby: Mark, Cholly keeps throwing the ball to the wrong team. Is that his fault, is it my fault or is it your fault?

Mark: I understand. I'll fix it.

yep, looks like dju makes up his mind before the play whether it's a pass play or RPO. Way too many 'bad' reads. Not sure he has the mental qb aptitude for this offense. He is probably more suited to a BIG 10 power run/ drop back pass game.

Yes, what went on in the offseason?

I hope DJ knows he is going to have to work like a Roman Legionnaire this coming summer or he's going to blow it all.

I can near guarantee you that Swinney's getting the play book to Klubnick as early as possible.

We're talking about a current bottom-5 offense in the nation. Pretty sure he's already "blown it all"

WRU left with Jeff Scott, and I'm not sure that Streeter is a legit QB coach. Being a college QB in your past, surely don't qualify a person to be a legit QB coach IMO, and the same goes for any coaching job. Experience through working with other successful coaches at any position improve a coaches talent at coaching a particular. What other successful QB coaches has Streeter ever worked with to gain elite QB coaching. Better yet, what are Streets qualifications with coaching QB's with the elite label coming out of HS? The same goes for Grisham, I think that he worked with Jeff Scott for a few days before leaving. Everybody has their own opinion with what's happening with our WR's and QB's, and it's my opinion that these new hire coaches has never coached talent that was better out of HS, than they were during their college careers. Add that they've never coached the type of talent at their previous coaching jobs like what we bring to Clemson since Dabo. Also, CJ, and Grisham actually didn't have any coaching experience at all. IMO, the coaches I've mentioned is a weakness for those players in a nut shell bc, none of those guys have ever coached elite talent like what's at Clemson!!! It takes time, years to become really good at what you do, and you have to be trained by people that were really good with what you want to!!!

If Streeter is not gone at the end of the season, then the last chapter of the season discussion on here will be written.

Had is easy with DW and TL, he just had to be a cheerleader and no one needed to evaluate. And through those 2 Nattys he got big raisea Tiger Nation is paying for.

Parents divorcing? (Rumor? Not sure)
Maybe he's that docile.
Maybe he's on meds that are making him that docile.
Maybe a few $$ from Dr Pepper tanked his drive.
RB called out the team's lack of offensive leadership (which is directed at the QB)
No one on offense seems to rally around this guy....maybe because he absolutely has no leadership qualities(?)
OLine looks like they don't care about protecting him.
WR's don't (or won't) catch his passes.
Dude makes dumb decisions and stares down receivers.

Dunno. But he sure as **** isn't the same player from last season.

These have either been lazy hires or inner family feel good hires. Either way you corrupt your organization with nepotism and and home town cronyism. Bring in outsider with proven experience who are hungry to exceed.

But no team of guys are going to intentionally lose bc they don't like a team mate!!! What they do on the field represents them, not the person they don't like!!!

My guess is it's a combination of things...

Oct 25, 2021, 2:22 PM

1) He's got the pressure of being the number one QB at Clemson, following "generational talents".
2) He's a kid who is 2500 miles from home and his parents are going through a divorce.
3) He's hasn't had a go to receiver that can bail him out and help build his confidence.
4) He hasn't been able to pick up the offense that we run, and the coaches are having to limit what they
do in an attempt to help him gain confidence.
5) The OL play hasn't been great.

Any one of these things by themselves wouldn't have been enough to hurt us, but the combination has been devastating. I think if we had just one of the following our season would have completely different...

1) A veteran difference maker at WR.
2) A dominant OL.
3) A veteran QB.

But we don't, so we have to do the best we can to improve throughout the season and reevaluate at season's end.

Oct 25, 2021, 2:41 PM

I think #4 is the big one...

All the others are not helping but #4 is the keystone that is missing.

DJ is just not working in this scheme. He isn't reading the defense and identifying his options accordingly. Add in a lack of accuracy and it gets into this issue where TE and Co can't run what they want and what they can run is ineffective.

If he has a staredown #1 WR ... that will beat a corner (aka does not fall even with PI), then the 1st int does not happen. Nuk would not have allowed the corner to push em down.

A vet OL would give DJ more time but I don't think that is the issue. It would make the running game easier but I think it would just even the balance.

A VET qb would be able to make it work because if DJ was reading the D he would be able to find the few open options as rare as they are right now.

I think it is a "see if DJ can improve" and/or new QB coach and/or interesting QB contest next spring with DJ likely entering the portal

That’s just too sensible

The shovel pass.

Oct 25, 2021, 2:35 PM

Watch that shovel pass a few times and that may tell you what is wrong with DJ.

He can't see the field and adjust. He can't even see 3 feet in front of him. And he is not quick on his feet - made virtually no attempt to tackle SirVocea Dennis.

I wonder if the college game is too fast for him. He was obviously a great HS QB.

Next question: what does Brandon Streeter think? What does he know, and when did he know it? Ditto for Coach TE. They share responsibility.

Re: The shovel pass.

Worse, look at Ajou. Right about when the shovel is coming, the safety bites in and there is open field behind him with the corner looking to contain underneath. It would have been a 25 yard pass with an OPEN walk to the endzone.

Oct 25, 2021, 2:55 PM [ in reply to The shovel pass. ]

Elliott said they knew his mechanics were a work in progress coming out of high school. So they all knew b4 he got on campus. He's had 2 springs though.

Remember, Street is not only the QB coach but also the passing game coordinator... Whatever that does. What are we suffering the most, QB and passing.

Concerns me that his mentor and his HS QB guru (like the one kb went to) said he's seen a tremendous regression in his mechanics. A couple other players not named dilfer said the same thing.

Anyone that follows golf will tell you when some golfers have gotten a new coach and changed swings, they've never been the same. Then it becomes mental and they can't hit a fairway consistently for anything. Same golfers will also tell you, you never work on that swing during game week.

ETN helped him a lot in both games last year. Which, i posted yesterday. We had will brown in the slot, 1 target, 1 completion for 12 yards. Never went back to it. Kobe pace, 1 target, 9 yards, never went to him again.

Beaux Collins 10 targets 5 completions 45 total yards.

Re: The shovel pass.

Oct 25, 2021, 8:13 PM

So he came to Clemson with questions on his mechanics and after 2 years it's almost unanimous that he's gotten significantly worse with his mechanics?? Not exactly a strong resume builder for Streeter...

Re: The Million Dollar Question: What’s going on with DJU?

Oct 25, 2021, 2:42 PM

I think DJ has a ton of talent and a great arm. I am sure he is being coached on his mechanics. But it looks to me that he just freezes and can't go through the progressions. Sometimes his feet just seem to not move and he's throwing flat footed. He just doesn't look like he has any confidence right now. I think he's a good athlete but he's doing everything slow because he's not processing things fast enough.

He's the QB of a high profile program and he's just not handling it very well. Also, with all the injuries, we have not had a consistent WR or RB stepping up that he can count on to be his go to guy.

The team problem are with the coaching, and regardless of who is brought in, the problem is still there. A great player can make the team better, but great coaching makes a team great!!!

Something is not there as a leader in his make up. When your best leader was an offensive Lineman who says the right things but spent most of his snaps picking is a$$ off the ground, then he was hard to rally around. But if you think about it, there is no one on the Offensive side of the ball that is a rah rah guy except Ajou, but i heard he is more of a playful/Jokester type guy than leader type and Ross is more of an introvert.
