Head Coach Bob Smith was terminated after going 6-12 in his 6th season in 1957. It was his 3rd consecutive losing season. He had led the Tigers to the very first ACC Championship prior to that.
After firing Smith, the Tigers hired Bill Wilhelm, who led the Tigers to an ACC Championship in his first season.
