Swinney on Deon Cain: "he ain't back yet"

Wide receiver Deon Cain is well on his way to rejoining the Clemson football team, but “he ain’t back yet.” What did head coach Dabo Swinney say about his star receiver? When will Cain be "back?" Full Story »

Hang tough coach.

Jul 19, 2016, 8:17 PM

If making men of boys was easy Nick Saban would be doing it.

As far as I see it, Nick's X coach that he tutored as in Kirby Smart, could use lots of lessons on mentoring young boys into great citizens. When the truth is being told, Kirby Smart isn't doing to good at being a good teacher of the young guys he is leading!!!

that would've won the National Championship game!

Re: He could've been the piece in the puzzle

I believe that also, that Cain was the missing link to us being the 2016 National Champions!!! He sure wouldn't have hurt us by playing. Bama had a good D, but I don't think that they had a complete All American secondary that could had covered our receiving core with a Cain added to a 3 WR set with a Jordan Leggett drawing serious attention. But if the truth was being told, I don't think that we were targeting Jordan Leggett enough in that game, in a similar way that Bama was using their TE. We got beat by giving up chunk yardage to Bama's TE if we are being honest.

Cain was simply being a selfish young man...

Jul 20, 2016, 6:32 AM [ in reply to He could've been the piece in the puzzle ]

With all that God given talent, he put his own selfish desires ahead of the team.

Would he have been a difference maker in the Natty? Maybe. A healthy Shaq and Alexander would have been for sure.

I heartily applaud Dabo - he obviously believes integrity is more important than winning. There are a ton of coaches that don't subscribe to that theory. Let's start with Jimbo...

You can't say he was being selfish unless he knew about the DT and still proceeded to inhale.

I will say, dabo did the right thing. His goal is to get these guys to the league and maximize there potential.

Once you get there(the NFL), you can do what you want

Been off and on weed since high school I believe. Just needed to get his priorities straight before something bad happened. To my knowledge he has straightened himself out.

Yup. Not gonna judge him for the weed. I don't use it but it's whatever to me. Just can't do that and expect to start for a Dabo led team, which is what he had to figure out.

Re: Deon Cain: just WHAT did he do?

Jul 20, 2016, 7:23 AM

till the rules or the laws change .... it does not go over well in the NFL either... if it continues it could cost him millions of dollars ..... like the OT that dropped from top 5 to late 1st round this year....

Re: Deon Cain: just WHAT did he do?

Jul 20, 2016, 6:22 AM [ in reply to Deon Cain: just WHAT did he do? ]

Did you really miss that in January? He failed a drug test for marijuana. He and 2 other players including the kicker who had been busted for cocaine and had to earn his way back into the team.

I for one am incredibly grateful to have a coach of Dabo's integrity who will do the right thing even when it hurts the teams chances in a big game. If we had Gus Malzan type leadership as our coach I'd not watch another game at Death Valley or care nearly as much - whether they won or not.

Instead of some other coach. He cares about players on and off the field. This is why Chad Kelly was not a good fit for Clemson and also that he would have been back up to Watson.

Re: Nothing I'm going to say, I haven't said before.....

Jul 19, 2016, 9:23 PM

but, as many of us go through our lives, we make mistakes. Small, large, a little of both. In a lot of situations, we don't have someone to turn to to vent about it, guide us, discipline us, etc...

Dabo takes this so seriously, I almost feel the emotions the kids should feel. I really feel his attempts are all perfectly aligned with what NEEDS to happen.

I mean, look, I wish I had those figures. Those chances to be told I was wrong. At times, I did. Those times I didn't were usually when I screwed up. Good for Dabo for sticking to his guns. Guiding these young men beyond a simple screw up.

You've gotta love this coach. The magnitude of these occasions is quickly forgotten within years, if not months. These young men will remember these things forever.

Work the program, Deon. Don't ever let it work you. Keep up the good work, young man.

Thank you, Dabo. For being the example we can all point to. Doing it right when it matters.

Go Tigers!

Am curious though is he just saying ita

Jul 19, 2016, 9:27 PM

Not a given that he gets playing time, has to earn it? Or is he saying can't fully participate. My guess is the first which he would probably say to anyone honestly. But he does get to go through fall camp etc and fully participate right??

Re: Am curious though is he just saying ita

fall camp starts in 2 weeks... he has been in the weight room but not participating in the team workouts ... but if he stays on track Cain will be fully back in fall camp....

Re: New Story: Swinney on Deon Cain: "he ain't back yet"

Jul 19, 2016, 9:29 PM

I will say this. Doing weed is not the worst thing one can do and it is legal in some states. However, I think back to the commercial that was on tv some time when I was back in college. A kid was hanging out in his room with a friend and saying he didn't get it why his ole man was so down on it. He kept saying things like I don't hurt anyone, I don't get into trouble. I don't steal, etc etc. Then his dad called up and asked him if he gone out looking for work. While he is waving the smoke out the window, he says "Uh not today, I will do it tomorrow." That pretty much sums it up. Many of those doing weed seem to lose the incentive to work hard or do much of anything. Kind of hard to succeed in life or support yourself or anyone else if you are doing more sitting than doing. Life is much more than just getting by and it dulls your senses to other things which are very important.

Jul 20, 2016, 11:06 AM

At any time the feds can sieze any weed grower or seller and all their assets and throw them in jail

Obama has essentially turned a blind eye to the states that have legalized it and for the most part told the feds to back off.

That could easily change in 2017.

Jul 20, 2016, 11:59 AM

The feds have not bothered the companies growing medical marijuana in a long time... not just President Obama.. and changing that would lead to a revolution...California might secede!

I am not sure if the feds have arrested anyone in 20 years for less than an ounce or more than 2 plants unless they needed an informant.

Re: What did Dabo mean by we could have played him? I thought

Jul 20, 2016, 10:31 AM

It's my understanding that we had the option of appealing which would have had the effect of delaying any suspensions. Both Okie and Bama had players test positive, but they appealed, allowing the players to participate. IIRC, it was a matter of guys who were at the end of their college careers, so appealing had the effect of nullifying any consequence.

Jul 20, 2016, 1:21 PM [ in reply to Re: What did Dabo mean by we could have played him? I thought ]

As I understand it, it was a Clemson drug test, not the NCAA. If the NCAA had tested them, the suspension would have been automatic but since Clemson tested them, the punishment was up to Clemson. That was the way it was reported at the time. The article I read even stated that it was really smart for schools to test their players themselves because of this loophole.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: New Story: Swinney on Deon Cain: "he ain't back yet"

Jul 20, 2016, 6:42 AM

Take note, other coaches; this is how it's done. There have been at least three different teams in ESPN's beloved SEC that have had player misconduct issues this off-season, all more severe than what Cain did. In all of these cases, the players got off with a slap on the wrist, if they had anything done to them at all.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: New Story: Swinney on Deon Cain: "he ain't back yet"

Jul 20, 2016, 7:32 AM

The culture and type of players that Dabo recruits is different than other schools... it ain't just talent, character also matters....

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

This is what it's all about

Jul 20, 2016, 9:54 AM

This story is a reminder of what Dabo and Clemson are all about. Dabo is not building a program like any other. He is building a legacy of an incredible fooball program that takes in young boys and sends out good men after they are done. Best program in the business. Couldn't be prouder to be a tiger.

Re: MAN!!!! He must'be effed up big to hear "he ain't back yet"......

Jul 20, 2016, 1:24 PM

It's not even close to the harshest punishment Dabo has doled out. Dismissal from the team is the harshest penalty, just ask Swag! Of course, he deserved it big time.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Dabo does such an excellent job of talking to the media

Jul 20, 2016, 2:09 PM

about discipline. It's such a smart idea to emphasize the long road of moral recovery. Dabo is smart to wait until the last minute to declare suspended players as back on the team. It makes it clear that there is a different kind of standard at Clemson. Dabo could easily have a great standard and ignore the proper way to advertise it. It's very good for our program that Dabo is good at both.
