Hot Take: OC Replacement for Elliott

Nov 17, 2021, 10:53 AM

We all know the offensive staff is gonna need a shake-up after this season. I'm hoping at least two of these three are gone: Caldwell, Elliott, and Grisham. We need someone new with some wrinkles in their playbook to shake things up offensively.

My hot take: Rich Rodriguez. He was OC for us in 1999-2000 and called a wonderful offense that had Woody Dantzler setting records. He's been so-so as a head coach, but I don't put his failures at Michigan on him as he never had full support from the school or boosters there. He ran some fantastic offenses at West Virginia as well. He's currently the OC for Bowden over at Louisiana-Monroe. Yeah, he may have left Arizona in disgrace, but the lawsuit against him was dismissed.

I'm hoping we either move Elliott out of playcalling or can him, alongside Grisham and Caldwell. I think Grisham needs to go, given how much the receivers have regressed. We have a bunch of tall and scrawny receivers that are weak, lazy, and can't block. We've gone downhill since Scott left, and we have no slot man or a short yardage guy like Rodgers, Renfrow, Humphries, etc. We also don't run jet sweeps or jet motion at all this year, which is a staple of the offense. I'd love to see if we could poach the Wake WR coach, Kevin Higgins.

I'm hoping Jeff Scott gets tired of the USF HC job and realizes coaching one side of the ball is just better for him.

If you think Clemson's current offense is out of date

Nov 17, 2021, 11:07 AM

Why on earth would you want to replace it with one that's been out of date for at least 10 years now?

For real though, this is a solid troll job.

My goodness djb_ws, is yours a parody post or are you serious?

Don't tell everyone that you are another of the ignorant 'fans' who continually call for the heads of T.Elliott / R.Caldwell / T.Grisham to roll. At some point, the mad emotions need to be replaced by sober analysis.

Don't have time to go through all of the silliness that you've posted, but I'll try to help out on two of your comments.

As for slot receiver, B.Spector was that guy and has been out all year. T.Stellato was brought in as a highly regarded recruit, but as everyone has learned in 20/20 hindsight, he wasn't ready to play. So is this a coaching error ... having two slot receivers on the roster, but circumstances have meant that neither can play?

As for OC, you gotta come out of that time-capsule for a few minutes before suggesting that R.Rod is better OC than T.Elliott ... or anyone for that matter. R.Rod's gimmick offense is ~ 10 years out of date and only works against mediocre opponents. Dabo has learned that a well executed pro-style type offense ... with QB runs sprinkled in ... is the way to beat top shelf opposition (i.e., Alabama, Ohio State, etc.)

Good luck to you in getting up to date on football.

I have questioned from the start "what is Tyler Grisham, (one of my favorite Clemson slot receivers) who has NEVER coached anything, doing coaching what started out as one of the best receiving groups in the nation." Doesn't make any sense to me.

I think it was sarcasm but could be wrong. Anyway, everyone has the right to post. We actually had 3 slot receivers and all 3 are out. Will Taylor may just be the best of the bunch. That's my opinion, but the guys gonna be lights out next year. Spec may decide to leave because I think he'll be bumped to 3. The problem with stellato is he was hurt b4 camp. So not only did he come in late, he couldn't participate in camp.

It's not all Dj's fault. Just figure what his stats would be if the drops were caught. The ol is crazy bad, Cross training freshman linemen is stupid. the poor kid has enough on his plate trying to learn one position . Instead of four and then being thrown to the wolves. Recruiting wide recievers would be easier if we had a qb who could get them the ball. Oc not hard to see when the play for 3rd and 4 is running the back into a brick wall who knows whats coming. We have a good program that's a given but the offence starts at qb and our offence is way to predictable for a young qb to make it work.

Yea great idea let's go back 20 years to get our new offense from a guy who's the OC at podunkville because of his record... great idea.

It's not the OC, it's the players ... how about we "catch", how about we "throw", how about we "block", how about we not give up special teams big plays ... those things....

We have ALOT of people hurt, ALOT... that is not the OC...

Sure, it's the player. Most of them 4 star recruits. They all suddenly can't play football. The coaching is the only thing that can be blamed. If the players can't play then why would that be? Perhaps they were not coached properly or motivated properly? If they are just bad players then maybe the coaches that recruited them should be replaced. No matter what it comes down to coaching. If Clemson cannot win with handily with the talent they have recruited then sorry..its the coaching.

The players changed, not the coaches

Nov 17, 2021, 2:42 PM

The NEW QB is 85-95% of what's causing our offensive stagnation. I assume you've watched the games?

I'm not trying to crap on DJ, but put him and his corresponding execution issues in any offense on any team, and you'll see the same issues. Granted, DJ isn't responsible for the OL issues we've had, but then again neither is the playcaller.

Then blame the person who evaluated DJ and thought he could

The DJ we signed, and the DJ who broke two records,

Nov 17, 2021, 8:28 PM

one in Death Valley for the biggest comeback in Clemson home history, and the other as the most opponent passing yards in the 125+ year history of Notre Dame is not the same plodding, overthinking, stiff QB we are seeing this year.

Coaching hasn't changed. The player has changed.

They coached him last year, and he played loose and as advertised. The issue with DJ is not his capability, it's getting him back to that loose and flowing QB he was before his head got rattled.

These are football coaches not psychologists. Sure coaches are responsible for mental aspects too, but you can only teach so much. DJ needs to figure it out from here. There are no magic playcalls or schemes that will suddenly make things look like we're used to.. its all up to DJ now.

I hope like heck he can do it. There's a much better player in that body, but there's nothing else coaches can do. It rests with him.

We will continue to try and keep it simple for him, handle him with kid gloves, but ultimately he's gonna have to grow up and play more like he's capable.

The offensive performance has been SO bad that yes some coaches need to be held accountable with the loss of their jobs. You are talking about an offense that is 107 in the country. Tony has been an issue for for years with the play calling and game planning. The talent has overcome. Coaching alone could at least have the offense in the top 70.

Re: Hot Take: OC Replacement for Elliott

If Elliot leaves I'd like to see us make a play at Willy Korn. I do hope Caldwell retires, I think he's put in his time. Give him an office job or admin job if he wants to stay with the program. I don't think Elliot is gone though tbh, I'm also not mad at that bc I think the lesson was learned, 5star who does not do the things you want to run does not = 5star performance. DJ is ultra talented but he's not the guy to be running an rpo based scheme or a scheme that relies on moving the qb alot. Grisham, well idk what to think bc the group has been pretty banged up the last 2 years.

Caldwell may retire, but Grisham isn't going anywhere and neither is Elliott, unless he chooses to do so.

We don't need "new wrinkles". We need to be able to execute the proven wrinkles.

Re: Hot Take: OC Replacement for Elliott

Nov 18, 2021, 7:27 AM

I agree with you, not sure about Richrod. Its almost a demand at this point that the aging Caldwell retires, our OL has been a low point for the last 4 years with the only bright spot a good center or two. Our running backs are woefully undercoached on pass block schemes and it takes them a whole season and a half to get to average-the whole time we are gameplanning around their weakness there. Grisham is a waste of time and money and we need can’t afford to waste either. He may be a fine analyst or a good guy, but if he can’t get the slot going or even decide who his best guy is until half the season is over, we dont need him. Elliot clearly has a mind for X/O’s but lacks passion and an ability to lead and influence. He consistently draws up plans and installs plays and gives the same tired excuses after we stink it up over and over like “they had loaded the box on us” and “they were running cloud with 3 safety’s” and other bunk. Kirby has the right idea down at UGA. The new leaked locker room speech from when they were up 24-0 over Florida is a good example. We don’t “play what the opponent gives us” we go out and force our will on the opponent until they break. Elliot does not have that in him. We should have and could have beaten both LSU and Ohio State with a better OC, and I won’t change my mind on that one.

Re: Hot Take: OC Replacement for Elliott

Absolute Zero Chance any of that happens.

The Coaching Staff’s take is bubble screens work even on 3&11 when you catch/throw/block it up right.

Dabo would never fire Elliott or Grish. He would maybe ask Caldwell to retire but probably not that either.

I vote for more bubble screens for -3 yards. They are riveting television all year long. And make sure its to the short side of the field, that always works.

Re: Hot Take: OC Replacement for Elliott

I suspect that if and when Tony leaves, Streeter will become OC. He did a great job as OC at previous job before coming to Clemson.

I’m amazed at how many people on here are so arrogant as to call for firing coaches that were hired by a head coach who’s won 2 NCs in the last 6 years. And tell him how to recruit and navigate the portal where great players magically appear. You notice they never give a name on the record for who to take from the portal.

I’m just fine letting Dabo run the team, and with me being a fan.
