Its going to be a long season for them. The pitching got them off to a good start but they will be lucky to get a wildcard.

They're definitely struggling but I think it has much more to do with Freddy Gonzales than the players. When he suddenly scrambled the line up at post season play last year is still one of the strangest manager moves I've ever witnessed.

He's only third all-time in that category. Any manager worth his salt would be at least 1000 games over .500.

BJ Upton too...

The Braves would have been better-off to retain Michael Bourne.
From a defensive and base-stealing standpoint, the two are probably a wash, but from an on-base standpoint, Michael Bourne is the better of the two.
Bourne's salary is also less.

They did get a draft pick out of that as well.

A pick they used on Jason Hursh out of Oklahoma St.
If they had it to do all over again, I'm sure they wouldn't do that Upton deal. But he is two years younger than Bourn, so you can understand they projected him as a better talent over a 4-5 year span.

As soon as Turner sold out they started a long slow decline. Looks like too many bean counters are calling the shots now and not someone who cares about winning.

The lopsided TV deal has a lot to do with it. They've made huge moves lately to retain lots of young talent for years.

And by that I mean if that won as few as 89 games.
It's easy to jump off when you're at the low point. No fan feels good about their team during a losing streak. But this is a talented team. As soon as they go on another run of winning 10 out of 13 or so, the fans will be crowning them again.

They better make some trades then I don't think upton and freeman can do it all. Now that the rest of the teams are getting the rust off the pitching is not so great either

This just shows how little you know about Braves baseball....J upton isn't doing crap....you would have been better off to say "freeman and gattis"
But don't leave out Heyward (who has been hitting great lately) and Johnson...
This is the same team that won 90+ last season.....they didn't need a trade then and the team is hitting better as a whole right now than they did this time last year.

I didn't say all. I said those specific players. The offensive problem isn't lack of hits it's hits with RISP. You would know that if you actually watched instead of just complained.

Upton didn't do anything during the losing streak. That's what I'm referring to. His avg has plummeted since being over .350.
Heyward has raised his avg to .220 from .140 over 2 to 3 weeks. You would know this if you actually watched instead of just complained.

May 6, 2014, 2:35 PM

who can't hit worth a #### but that no other teams want. Too bad MLB doesn't have the same contract terms the NFL has where most if not all the money in a player's contract is not guaranteed. In that case Uggla, BJ Upton, and a couple of others would be long gone.
The funny thing is that pitching was supposed to be the weakness this season.
They're third in the NL in home runs but next to last in runs scored - can't get any hits and anyone on base. Relying on the long ball won't work.

The combo of Uggla and Upton really has hurt them the past 2 seasons. Neither can hit. That's 2 weak links in the chain.

Last year, they hit .249 overall and .251 with RISP.
In 2012, it was .247 overall and .231 RISP.
2011: .243/.249
2010: .258/.262
2009: .263/.278
2008: .270/.272]
Right now, the split is .235/.203. That 30-point gap is almost certainly unsustainable.

the Braves are coming off a season where they were 4th in the league in run scoring. It's still early yet. Walker and Fletcher have their hands full with some guys with major, major holes in their swing.

The hitters are who they are.
May 6, 2014, 3:41 PM

B.J. Upton, Dan Uggla, Justin Upton were strikeout-prone before coming to Atlanta, they're strikeout prone now, and they always will be. They (supposedly) make up for that with power. The Braves' only high-contact hitters are Simmons and Freeman, and that's not going to change unless different players are brought in. No hitting coach will change that.

[ in reply to Hitting coaches don't do much...plus, ] |

I posted and using those as benchmarks. It should be noted that:
1. Batting average is not a great stat to measure offensive performance. I used it to show how batting average typically doesn't vary much based on scenarios like RISP.
2. Baseball as a whole gone swung back toward pitching the last couple of years. Here is the NL batting average, by year:
2009: .259 2010: .255 2011: .253 2012: .254 2013: .251 2014: .249

When evaluating performence, you really need to look at the sluging percentage and the on-base percentage or the OPS. The OPS isn't a perfect indicator but it is a reasonably good measure of a players offensive contributions.
