The ACC

I’d love to do a real, hard objective study of all the conferences and their history, including the way they have been perceived (meaning their image) and how they have performed historically.
I am fascinated by the ACC and the way it’s perceived, to be honest. For whatever reason, I get this idea of it being the “oddest” conference in college football, almost like it was haphazardly thrown together. Even it’s name - the “Atlantic Coast”, which includes teams not at all on the Atlantic coast (I.e Pittsburgh, Clemson, etc).
The one thing I like about the culture of the ACC is that it mostly includes highly regarded educational institutions. And I feel this brings in a more ethical football team and overall culture.
Another interesting point for me is - has the ACC ever been a dominant football conference? That is to say, has the general consensus ever been anything similar to that what we see in the SEC today?
Obviously, I’m not well studied in the conferences but would appreciate any outlook from someone who has been around some years and has some insight into why the ACC feels this way.

You haven’t looked at the names of other conferences have you?
SEC:
Florida, Kentucky, A&M, Mizzou all 3 aren’t in the southeast
Don’t get me started on the BIG conferences

Northerners, but go up the middle of the whole state and it’s for sure Southern. Gainesville and the surrounding areas are definitely Southern.

Pennsylvania would be considered Atlantic close enough. The only one is recent Louisville. Clemson? We are the Atlantic.

It’s the states the original schools are in are on the Atlantic coast, not the actual campuses being on the coast.

You really need to look at the teams that comprise the acc. I semi consider Notre Dame as the acc. Sec team didn’t win a first football championship until 51. Tennessee.
Ga Tech has a steep history of nattys as does Nd.. and Pitt in early times. If you look at modern day, from 1980- the acc is tied with the sec in fb championships.
It’s really an unbelievable spin job... for both the sec and the b1g. You take bamas recent run under nicki out and the sec is average at best. B1g has no claim.
The only reason the other conferences have championships is because of the original ny day bowl tie ins. Namely the b12. Otherwise, they’d be chit.

The Big Ten is the oldest and they have 14 members. Also, who cares about conference accomplishments unless your team is a loser! Clemson is now the model of what any aspiring football team wants to be!

I’m going to be polite in my response as your question seems sincere. However, if it is not well ...
The conference can be viewed in three eras. Pre-FSU, FSU, post expansion.
Each has there own sub history. In football, Clemson dominated the early part. FSU owned the ACC In The 90s and early part of 2000s. We have owned in past years.
Various teams brought their own successful history. (Miami , VT, FSU, BC, GT, PItt) but NOT So Carolina.
Collectively the ACC has a great history but not much since the current status with the exception of US.
In terms of “research” what are you looking for?
