Is it me or is the D better this yr than last yr?

Oct 3, 2016, 10:35 AM

Yes we just gave up a lot of pts and yds but that was against the #1 Offense in college.
But we no longer give up 5 50 yd plays a game. We're making teams work for every yd.
Our run D is playing unreal.
Our Dbs seem to be playing disciplined.
Add in special teams play as well.

company. Maybe a slight drop off at CB without Mac, but our safety play is better. We aren't seeing as many coverage busts to this point, and Jadar has better ball skills than anyone we had back there a year ago. I haven't seen any drop off in run support either with Jayron gone.

LB play has been really good. Not always stellar in coverage, but the same could be said a year ago. We have a much deeper group for the nickel hybrid spot too. Overall, this group is probably a little better than a year ago.

DEs aren't as dominant, but are still pretty darn good. Wilkins is a play maker regardless of where he lines up. DT's are arguably the best in the country. We aren't getting as much edge pressure from the ends this year, but we are consistently collapsing the inside of the pocket. The return of Bryant should give the line a boost too.

Edge pressure will improve when Austin Bryant returns....

I think it is.***

I think it is too. They seem really hungry. I worder if the intensity will drop off any during the long season. I think not.

Still have trouble with tight ends.

Oct 3, 2016, 10:51 AM

But, they are definitely playing better than predicted.

That's not surprsing though and isn't likely to change.

Oct 3, 2016, 10:53 AM

Our LBs aren't good in coverage, particularly Boulware.

Coverage is not Ben's forte, however he isn't bad at it.

Ben makes up for it simply by being the

heart and soul of the defense. Without him this defense would not be as good.

Oh and regarding the points and yards...

Oct 3, 2016, 10:52 AM

Louisville only averaged 5.7 yards per play against us. Look at what they did to everyone else:

Charlotte - 9.5
Syracuse - 10.4
Florida St - 11.5
Marshall - 8.1

And Jackson played the full 60 minutes against us.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Venables knew we had to stop the huge chunk plays

Oct 3, 2016, 11:17 AM

They were going to get yards, but the idea was to make them earn every single one and not give up the big 40 yard quick strike plays.

Hats off to the coaches and players for getting that done.

I think it's better, Sat night will be the only game this season the Tigers D plays bad.
No team we have left will put up over 500 yards or score 36 pts.

FSU is probably capable. I don't know if they will but they

have the pieces to do it and Jimbo usually calls a good game. Their issue is mostly just defense this year.

The FSU QB will not make our players miss him like
Jackson did.
FSU and Cook will get some yards but nothing like Louisville did.

Safety play/effort is def better

Hard to say

Oct 3, 2016, 10:57 AM

Through the Miami game last year our D played stellar. Although we haven't really seen many big plays. Jackson did have some but it was more of a fatigue issue than mental.

Brad Brownell: more losses than any other coach in school history.

The 1st half of last season was great.. the D dropped off

Oct 3, 2016, 10:59 AM

in the 2nd half i thought. So as far as this year, time will tell.

Re: The 1st half of last season was great.. the D dropped off

Oct 3, 2016, 11:29 AM

Because they were on the field for 99 plays. For perspective, GT only ran 57 total.

Fatigue coupled with adjustments by Petrino and our offense sputtering in the 3rd quarter is why they put up yards. Also, freaking Lamar Jackson. Lol.

I don't see anyone other than Syracuse getting that close to total plays per game this year that we will play, so hopefully fatigue won't be an issue. Still, I like Clemson even WITH fatigue.

We are better. And when we get all our players back on d we will be unstoppable?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Pretty #### good

Oct 3, 2016, 11:33 AM

Venables is the best coach we have. The D was shutting Louisville down for the most part until the O started turning the ball over and such.
