Guys, I know it’s fun to look at the portal and what all is out there. But know that Dabo is most likely not taking anyone. He won’t take most recruits that visit somewhere after Clemson, much less attend another school

Yeah, 12-2, Acc championship, Orange Bowl and the 7th ranked recruiting class sure do sound like mediocrity to me.
God, some of you are so stupid.

You have made clear your only criteria to be an elite team is to make the playoffs. Over the past 2 years 6 teams have made the playoffs including Cincinnati and TCU as first timers. So anything past #6 is second tier, did I get that right?

Let us know when we make the basketball equivalent of the playoffs. I hope to still be around to enjoy it.

An A-She-She championship should almost be expected given the level of competition in the conference.
And I think we can still be the big fish in the small ACC pond without making the portal a 2-way street, if that is all we aspire to do.
But if we want to compete with the top-tier teams, we can't keep hemorrhaging players to the portal and not try to replace them.

Okay Coot, when was the Coots last conference Championship? Does a 1969 ACC championship ring a bell? 53 years ago.

I think if we are going to take anyone from the portal we will not hear about it until after the early signing day. We will just need to wait and be surprised. I also think that if we take anyone it will be very few to fill selective gaps in the roster.

Correct. Commits are ALL IN...no more visits to other schools. If you aren't ready to commit, then don't.
Recruits are all out there taking visits...as they should be.

Dabo is even LESS likely to acquire anyone from the Portal

now, as the top players are just selling themselves to the highest bidder. Unlike many of the more dysfunctional on here, Dabo knows that Clemson just does not have the financial horses to get in a bidding war with Texas Oil Money, or Yankee Industrialist Money. (Or even good old Georgia Bagmen.)

It’s not about Clemson having the money.
Dec 8, 2022, 6:51 PM
|

It’s about businesses owned by Clemson fans having money. These are the same people who helped pay for our finest facilities in the nation, so we aren’t hurting for deep pockets at Clemson - no matter how much that runs contrary to the reputation many of our fans seem to want, which is that we are a poor school with simple folks who ain’t got nuthin.’
NIL is also about us having marketable players. DJ got deals from the likes of Bojangles and Dr. Pepper while at Clemson. So NIL deals of a high dollar amount are very doable here.
I know you aren’t saying all of these things, but your post made me think of them.

For once I agree with you, it is not about money, it is about value and return on investment. For instance Texas A&M made a large investment in Jimbo and a group of players. In my opinion they got a poor return. On the other side we have a pretty good size investment in Dabo and his program (although not nearly as large as TAMU) and I see a very reasonable return, #7 ranking, NY6 bowl, championships.

JK - your comment is bogus. Clemson is at a financial disad.

Yes, it IS about limited resources.
Consider. Clemson has 25,000 students. Assume 25% graduate per year (too high - but for math sake). 6,250 graduates per year. 30 years x 6,250 = 187,500 graduates with potential income over the past 30 years.
Ohio State 61,000x.25x30 years = 457,500 graduates with potential income.
UGA 40,000.25x30 years = 300,000 graduates with potential income.
If every graduate of the three schools give $50 each year. Clemson = $9,375,000 per year Ohio State = $23,775,000 per year UGA = $15,000,000 per year
Clearly, not every graduate gives $50 per year. But relationship and percentages probably hold true. The number of companies owned by past students is probably similar.
Your comment is bogus.

Yeah that’s why we are talking to the CB from UVA, and offered two top OL last year they just decided to go elsewhere. Y’all really do love to repeat yourselves, I’m sure Dabo is just going to nose dive the program he has built that’s the most “logical” idea to come up with

Agreed! And, the idea that Clemson is drifting back to mediocrity b/c Dabo won't take transfers is crazy as well.
Call it Dabo Kool-Aid "if it makes you feel like a bigger human" but: how much sense does it make for someone to poor their heart and soul into building something only to purposely destroy it"?
That makes no sense. Now if you said, "the same stubbornness that helped Dabo build Clemson; is possibly hurting it" I wouldn't argue. Not that I think his stubbornness is bringing Clemson down; I think to this point "his system of doing things is still working"! We had issues at QB and OL(more l.y.) and the offense has been hit or miss/up and down and we haven't looked like one of the best teams in the country. Yet, 95% of the entire playing CFB world would give their "n**s" to be where we are as a program.
We offered those OL last year and they just didn't come. I can see us offering the DE position in the portal. But, I wouldn't be shocked if we didn't.
The couch coaches who have never won a NC know though(yeah right)!
Let's get the QB and OL and more experience for the OC and staff before we think "the system is broken"!
Yet, we have only lost 5 games in 2 years, but "it's broken"! Ohio State hasn't won a title since 2014 - are they broken? Are they in a mess? We have won two since then!
People are funny!

Will, Why do you think that is ? Why won't Dabo consider players who look too closely at other schools.
Could if be that he only wants players who have drunk his kool-aid ??

may or may not pan out when he can sign 10 coming out of high school of which 2 or 3 might not pan out.
Using the portal starts a cycle which is painful to break. You take a QB and have to sacrifice a HS QB to do so. Either next year or the year after that transfer QB is going to leave because of expired eligibility, NFL or transfer to another program because he sees greener grass over the fence.
It's hard to build depth with transfers and the probability that you're getting someone else's problem is always higher with portal players.

agreed, but it would be nice to add some ready to play depth at WR, RB and DL. I know we have some stud DL and very good WR coming in next year, but our depth at RB is not great after Shipley and Mafah.

There’s definitely some talent to be looked at in the portal, but some of them have character issues that have to be considered too. Some of them are leaving because they have been disciplined by their coaches. Case in point, 3 highly ranked players from Texas A$M are leaving and all 3 of them had been disciplined for team violations. So, you definitely have to cherry-pick the portal when you use it or you might end up with someone else’s bad apple.
