The offense is gonna be back next year

Jan 2, 2022, 10:11 AM

I really do believe our Clemson offense will be back to averaging 40 pts a game. The QB position will work itself out by the 3rd game. Either DJ figures it out or Klubnick takes over. Should have a healthy wide receiver grounp Add in Shipley maffah and pace at RB. And a more creative offense with Streeter. I believe Streeter will game plan around the strengths he has he will have a entire offseason to install his flavor to this offense. I think we average 40pts a game again. The scheme yes will remain the same but the difference between Streeter and Elliot offense. Is I think Streeters offense won’t be as vanilla as Tony’s.

That’s a tall task…..

Jan 2, 2022, 10:35 AM

I agree the QB will “work itself out”. The QB position is probably 4th on my “concern list”

1. WRs - I don’t see ANY WR on our next years roster (or this years) that comes remotely close to a Mike Williams, tee Higgins, Sammy, Ross (pre injury), Renfrow, Rodgers, etc…. Even when DJ made his throws the WRs dropped them. No separation could be made this year by our WRs. This position needs HUGE off season improvement. From a shear talent perspective we’re not close to our talent of national championship teams.

2. Oline - same story different year. I hear we have talent. Talent. Talent. But yet never see any kind of development. Even our 2016 & 2018 olines weren’t that great. For whatever reason our Olines have always underperformed.

3. OC/play calling - I have doubts about streeter. However I’m holding out hope that the atrocity of an offense we saw this year will cause streeter to make the much needed tweaks to the offense and play calling that we need to return to the 40+PPg a national title contender offense possesses.

4. QB - DJ was not that good this year but I think the perfect storm of subpar performance of the above 3 didn’t help at all. This position will work itself out. Either DJ or klubnik. It’s also concerning that DJ “regressed” under our current OCs teaching/coaching. If we don’t have a threat of run from the QB position we can’t be successful at all. Not at Clemson.

1. Im looking for Stellato and Collins’s

2. Hopefully we have the right mix and Thomas Austin can bring some fresh training and coaching. This one is concerning.

3. I like streeter but Dabo seems to be dead set on doubling down and not changing anything because the fans think it’s what we need. Offense might be the same old scheme.

4. He’s gotten better over the year. Hopefully he can be serviceable next year while we create a healthy QB competition.

Good points. Until we have an OL more like other top tier programs, we're going to be relying on an elite QB to make up the difference. Hard to do, year in year out.

This is a good observation.

Class of ‘71. Went through “rat season” and glad I did.

I am afraid a lot of people here are going to be disappointed

when we likely don’t make the playoffs next year.

We have a lot of issues to fix before that can happen. My concern is that even if we fix enough issues to win the ACC, we will find ourselves in the same position we were in each of our last two playoff appearances - overmatched and dominated.

I hope I’m wrong. This is when we have to trust Dabo to get these issues fixed. The new coordinators deserve a chance to show what they can do.

This is a good summary

And as others commented, it is a tall order.

I agree #1 is a big challenge, but I don’t think insurmountable. I don’t think we must have 4 playmaking receivers. When we’ve had one or two playmaking receivers, and two more steady receivers, our offense has clicked. Having a quick, speedy playmaker WR who creates separation in the slot - Artavis Scott, Renfrow, Ray Ray, Amari, seems to be what REALLY makes our offense go. I think it is vital we address that deficiency through development and recruiting. I am hoping Antonio Williams is that answer. His reviews at Under Armor practices are off the charts. His stock is rising with each practice. The expert evaluations say he has a gift for creating separation downfield. We need that. I’m not sure he will be a steady contributor next year early on. As far as Taylor and Stellato, perhaps they can develop into 3rd down possession receivers like Hunter? Hunter has elite short area quickness. That is how he routinely got open on possession downs, and why he has taken the NFL by storm. That is very different than speed. Artavis had that SAQ too. Neither had elite speed but both were great in our offense. The Collins kids are coming along. I think they can be better than solid receivers. If Ngata or EJ can get healthy and become a 50:50 and back shoulder threat (Mike Williams style), this WR group could be very good again. Hopefully Randall comes in and makes a splash too. I think we need to recruit Sammy style, or I call it the “Peter Warrick style” receiver. These are what Bama gets so successfully. They can separate deep (elite speed) and also have short area quickness. These are the WR’s where you hold your breath every time they touch it because they can take it to the house. I know these are hard to come by in recruiting. We have not had many. Besides Sammy, Deon Cain had the skill set but never quite put it all together.

I think there’s a lot of talent set to be in our WR room. We just have to get healthy and get the right pieces in the right places.

Another major element that will help greatly with WR play lies in the QB room. WR separation comes with DJ or Cade having the skill (and protection) to work the safeties with their eyes, work progressions, and throw open their receivers, and throw catchable balls with rhythm and tempo. Deshaun was sooo good at the rhythm and tempo part. His instincts and improvisational skills were off the charts. Saban about had a coronary in the championship game when Deshaun would tuck it an run. Our offense needs a mobile QB that can improvise and make plays with their legs. We were not very good at the protection, eyes, legs, rhythm, or tempo part this season. That must all improve. The WR’s will look a lot better when those OL and QB elements improve. It all goes together.

The Oline and QB (two #1’s - who else has that?) talent will be there. I think we will be much improved (ACC champs) next season and back in the playoff in 2023. I don’t know if DJ will be our starter but I expect to see him 20-25 lbs lighter and much improved. Kid is a worker. He’ll get better.

I see your concerns and they are valid no doubt… I would say maybe our new OL coach will light a fire under those boys. I was never really high on Caldwell; however, he does seem like a great guy and has been in the game for a long time. Think it was time for a change.

Agree with all of this. Not so sure about 40 PPG. Maybe around the low to mid 30's. Along with improved QB play, I believe that Taylor and Briningstool will be doing BIG things over the middle of the field that is really going to take the lid off of defenses.

The only thing I don’t want to see is the QB competition translate to unnecessary losses.

If Klubnick shows he can make better decisions after the snap than DJ next year, then that will be when the switch will occur. It won’t necessarily be due to inaccurate throws per se, although if they result in turnovers it will. The most important job of a QB is managing the game. That means you make wise decisions at the right time.

I still think DJ will be much improved next year. I honestly do. He isn’t a fast mover, but his game management, decision making and accuracy will leap frog from this year.

Let’s wait and see. ??

We need to see a reversal on the injury front next year

Jan 2, 2022, 11:20 AM

This has been by far the most injury riddled squad I’ve seen at Clemson in over 60 years as a fan.

Not just injuries, but key injuries!

We never played more than two games with the same group of OL on the field. Just when things would begin to jell, an OL would get hurt or go on Covid protocol.

We never had a full healthy group of WRs at the same time ... we never had the 5-6 interchangeable guys you must have to keep everyone fresh and able to give 100% every down when they’re on the field.

Both Taisun and DJ were less than 100% most of the time. DJ has a bum knee and a torn up throwing hand. He wasn’t great early on, but once again, just as he began to get things together, the injuries hit.

Skalski was such a warrior, but his lingering foot problem kept him on the sidelines or slowed him down over and over.

Our most experienced safeties missed all of or much of the season.

Williams, Davis, and Bresee ... three of our best DTs were hurt for multiple games.

This season has been a disaster from a personnel standpoint, but it has been a huge testament to the players and the coaches that another 10-win season was achieved.

We’re not that far away from another 13-15 win season. 2022 will be better!

We will know a LOT more

About this team after spring ball. Until then it’s all just mindless banter. The QB thing just has to be solved.

I’ve watched most of all the bowl games this year and every team seemed to be better at that position than Clemson and several teams, including Iowa State, had backup in the game. The Tigers need to get healthy. That sounds like an excuse but it’s a fact.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Brock Purdy was a back-up QB for Iowa State ??

Jan 2, 2022, 1:02 PM

I don’t think that’s correct.

He’s been the starter for a long time and was considered a highNFL draft prospect.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

DJ started and played nearly all the time this year.

Jan 2, 2022, 3:01 PM

He practiced all year and played almost all the time we had offense on the field. He ended the season just as he started.

When the season started he didn't know where his receivers were after the ball was snapped. There is no evidence that will change. The only thing that changed is that the OC this year wouldn't call plays that required DJ to locate the ball to a receiver who was moving laterally (across the field at any rate of speed).

We will all know during the first quarter of our first game. If DJ continues to stare at his primary receiver we will know that he is still can't fully function as a the quarterback we need.

I don't hate the kid. I just assess the facts.

Re: The offense is gonna be back next year

Jan 2, 2022, 5:27 PM

Dj is rated 146th in the country. That is about as awful as you can be and he's about to be a jr. There is no way Cade sits more than 2-3 games before taking over. Hoping DJ will lead us anywhere is laughable.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Same players, same coaches, same scheme

Jan 2, 2022, 6:15 PM

Would be hilarious if Streeter was an offensive genius and was just refusing to help Tony. Or if Austin was an amazing coach and just refused to help our OL.

Tony: DJ isn’t accurate at all, what should we do?
Streeter: abandon the run, and throw screens and swing passes on third and long, lol

Putnam: coach Austin, I’m getting pushed back every single play and can’t figure out how to block.
Austin: lol, sucks to suck, kid.

There’s a word for doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.
