Lunge advice needed

May 4, 2021, 10:46 AM

I'm stuck on a decision, so I decided to the experts here in the lunge. I mean, even if y'all don't have a clue what you're talking about, you'll give me advice, right?

okay. so here's the situation:
I'm hiring and electrical engineer (since @ssoccerkrzy® turned me down). anyway, posting the job, got two internal candidates. one is has the fundamentals and meets the minimum qualifications, but doesn't have much experience in the design field. The other is very well qualified. The problem is the well qualified dude came across to all interviewers as very-confident - arrogant. More importantly, he missed his initial interview with me and the other manager. I gave him a chance to reschedule. I figured he'd have a really good explanation for missing the interview that had been on the calendar for 2 weeks per his request to move it out. He didn't. He had nothing other than, "he didn't realize it was on the calendar"

Meanwhile, the other guy is checking in with me, he even turned down another job because he really wants this one. He would just require a lot of OTJ training.

I have made my decision and the the other panelists agreed, but I want to see what you all think.

Is the first guy an o brainer? or should I not be overly critical of the other dude? what say the lunge? talk amongst yourselves. I'll check back in a bit.

depends - is bro1 a coach's son type of player?

May 4, 2021, 10:48 AM

does he have a high football IQ?

does he have a high motor?

these are the questions that matter.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

all good questions. definitely a high motor. Military guy***

"It's Baltimore, Gentlemen; the Gods will not save you."

The first guy sounds cheaper and eager to please.

May 4, 2021, 10:51 AM

The second guy probably posts on this bored.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That was my stance. the other peeps on the panel were more

May 4, 2021, 10:55 AM

forgiving. (they're European). They also chalked his arrogance up to being from the US. sigh...

Europeans calling Americans arrogant?

What is the world coming to?

Also, suggest they bathe occasionally.

I 'd have a hard time forgiving anybody for not showing for

May 4, 2021, 10:51 AM

an interview.

Unless it was somebody who we knew was perfect for the job AND they had a great/legit excuse AND they apologized.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Agree with dawg. Or as my dad once told me (he had to hire

May 4, 2021, 10:54 AM

Engineers and was always choosing between new grads vs 30 year olds): "Experience is great for the job at hand. But if I have to choose between intelligence and experience, I'll hire intelligence every time. If I can't provide the experience, I wouldn't work for me if I was him."

Back in the day when we had a interview scheduled and ......

May 4, 2021, 10:54 AM

said person didn't show up it was bye bye.

I was thinking more on the lines of "we can train somone how

May 4, 2021, 10:57 AM

to design something, but we can train someone not to be a jerk"

or something like that :)

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

"It's Baltimore, Gentlemen; the Gods will not save you."

this. Watch guy 1 bloom where he's planted, or put up with

May 4, 2021, 11:01 AM

a PITA for years. Missing the first interview on top of being arrogant, 2 major red flags for guy2.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

And he would move to another job in a skinny minute

May 4, 2021, 12:15 PM

other guy will be much more loyal.

badge-donor-05yr.jpgmilitary_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

First one. You can teach him what he needs to know

May 4, 2021, 10:55 AM

the other guy already knows it all.

Plus, like many have said, first one is cheaper

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I like your funny words magic man

Re: this ole adage comes to mind.....

May 4, 2021, 10:56 AM

Hire for attitude train for skill.

also, you never get a second chance to make a first impression. I would guess the qualified guy becomes the most hated within 6 months.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Hire the one that wants the job and get him up to speed ASAP***

You cannot retrain the dude who just DGAF***

May 4, 2021, 10:59 AM

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'd take the one who wants it and would appreciate it.

May 4, 2021, 11:02 AM

You may find he's willing to learn on the fly and will ultimately be the better hire.

Kinda see this as a Dabo Swinney versus Will Mushchump kind of hire.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgringofhonor-tiggity-110.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

How close do you have to work with them?

May 4, 2021, 11:03 AM

#2 could make everyone's life miserable

I'd rather train up someone that wants to be there than put up with an entitled a-hole that has already proved to be unreliable.

May 4, 2021, 11:03 AM

kiss on the mouth?

Srs though, if you hire dood who missed the interview you'll probably be looking for another guy to replace him soon enough when he leaves. Take the dood who wants it. The extra time training will pay off in the long run.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Hire both, until guy 1 can show he

May 4, 2021, 11:05 AM

design, then can the other guy for sport.

badge-donor-05yr.jpgringofhonor-aero.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Missing an interview and offering no...

May 4, 2021, 11:09 AM

apology and/or a decent excuse would be a deal breaker for me.

Attitude is tough to train/fix.

Give me someone with basic skills that has a good attitude that is willing to learn any day.

I've learned that someone that requires a lot of training is not necessarily a bad thing...meaning you've got the opportunity to instill expectations and process from scratch, versus possibly having to change some bad/incorrect habits/methods/attitudes.

Take the guy that's following up!

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

As a fellow, arrogant, and smug electrical engineer

May 4, 2021, 11:11 AM

I am appalled by the fact you never reached out to me re: said position

2024 purple level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

i mean...what do you know about power plants?

May 4, 2021, 11:13 AM

clearly you don't search COS often enough. ;)

I've been trying to fill this spot since November. so ready to be done with this process.

"It's Baltimore, Gentlemen; the Gods will not save you."

I mean, I worked at the same location

May 4, 2021, 11:16 AM

twelve years ago. But, yeah, I don't hop on COS often. You have a point.

2024 purple level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I personally dislike training and also

May 4, 2021, 11:13 AM

despise arrogant ###### who don't care about the job.

I'd look for a different candidate or go with the untrained person with a tight trial window for learning the job.

badge-donor-05yr.jpgbadge-ringofhonor-conservativealex.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Missing an interview like that makes that candidate

May 4, 2021, 11:14 AM

unemployable by you IMO.

Remember you only get the absolute best version of an employee during the interview process.

Fuggthatguy.

If you aren't convinced on the other candidate, wait and take your time.

You’re being played. They are both the same guy!

mentor the first one

second one may have the experience but he won't stay and if he can't remember a meeting/calendar detail, I would question his work detail.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Listen bro. My work detail is impeccable.

May 4, 2021, 12:15 PM

I just drink a lot. So the details get a little hazy.

A little Hazy DIPA I mean! Yeeaaaaahhhh!!!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Go with the first one

May 4, 2021, 12:27 PM

Second one seems to be an entitled ###.

You can teach someone the work if they have the basic understanding. Much harder to teach someone not to be an #######.

badge-donor-05yr.jpgmilitary_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

First one. I'll take a hardworking C student over

May 4, 2021, 12:34 PM

an entitled A student every day.
