Coral Gables stadium is the draw for DRad

Dec 8, 2021, 10:20 PM

My guess re the DRad move is that there are extremely deep pocketed investors and UM donors that are committed to someway somehow building a massive retail/residential/entertainment complex in CG. It would take colossal dollars and leadership, and they figure DRad is their best hope at making it happen. It will take billions and UM will only be a part of the whole pie.

I think everybody agrees the Orange Bowl was a massive part of UM's identity, and the identity can never be restored without an on campus stadium.

Although Accurate

I think the 3 million dollar yearly salary is more of an incentive.

It is a big deal. My Miami fan neighbor up here in the Tundra of Minnesota, said it is awful to get from campus to the Orange Bowl.

I would not build a stadium larger than 50,000 though. Otherwise it will still be 3 quarters empty.

And, such a move is already in the works. But, he will be

the one to make it happen, just like he has been the TRUE architect of our football program's recent success this past decade. :)

Wouldn't the words "Billionaire Clemson Graduate" sound

Dec 8, 2021, 11:07 PM

Also Ruiz's sister is Cristbol's wife so this was in the works for awhile.

this plan is dead on arrival. The city said they oppose it. The land is owned by the school district and they oppose the plan. UM needs to find alternate site.

The residents of Coral Gables have no intention of letting the caliber of people that constitute the University of Miami's football fans anywhere near their town.

I think it is A draw but probably not THE draw. I think this decision is more about the next phase of Drad’s life than the current. He got his masters and met his wife at UM; at 63 I think he looking for the place he would like to retire. Work 10 or so mor years making 3mil a year and then ride off in the south Florida sun; sounds like a good deal to me.

Thanks for sharing Steve Obannon we were all hoping you would offer up an unsolicited off-topic opinion.

DRad loves to spend money and build/update facilities

Dec 9, 2021, 12:18 PM

I’m not knocking him. It’s what he’s good at. Sounds like Miami is investing a lot into their future football program and I think he’s a great leader for the job.

Hiring candidates is another story but with Mario being hired he won’t have to hire anyone soon (Ofcourse other hires maybe but not in football) and so I think it’s the perfect job for him. A win win for him and Miami.

Agree. They want him to spearhead building a new stadium near Coral Gables and going to 3 mill a year was certainly a draw.

Not happening in Coral Gables, but I couldn't agree more

University of Miami football will remain irrelevant for as long as they do not have their own stadium closer to the school. Coral Gables is not going to have it, but for those newer to this world, the old Orange Bowl was in west Miami / Little Havana neighborhood, not on/near UM campus. It was in the exact spot that the Miami Marlins LoanDepot Stadium is in now, if you want to look it up on a map. And that's where the core local fan base is also.

I'm bittersweet on the notion of UM returning to prominence, especially under DRad, but nothing against him. FSU and UM sucking for the past 5-10 years, respectively, has done serious damage to the reputation of the ACC. The Tigers busted through to the playoff on the strength of our own performance, but for as long as those two "powerhouses" have been in the gutter, the ACC is a laughingstock.

I'd argue that if FSU and UM were playing up to their standard, and with the Tigers being top-10 year in and year out, with the likes of VTech, GTech, UNC and BC testing the back end of the top-25, the ACC would be just as good or better than the Big 10 and the Big 12.

UM is the key to this happening. Its a sleeping lion, and I'm not sure I want to see it awake. New stadium is the only way that happens. People just have no interest in going up to Miami Gardens.
