Just skimmed the TNet article and I don't think he was discussed at all. He seemed to have so much potential and should contribute depth... what's the deal?

Good question. It's like when Linthicum went dark last season after the red shirt.
It's strange to me that NFL teams can take a seasoned O-lineman out of college (usually not even an elite program), and plug them directly into a starting role if needed. But we get all this great talent out of high school, and it takes years for them to develop/play/pan out. I'm not making a wise-crack, I'm just assuming this is probably a mass and discipline thing that evolves faster in college than high-school, but I just don't know. I do know Linthicum got screwed his senior year with COVID too.
Just want to see a big spark on O-Line this season.
[Clarifying screwed by covid because I believe they cancelled the season or at least shortened it]

It seems like the athleticism at DL is just disproportionate to OL. Takes a couple of years for the OL to develop and hold their own against these explosive DLs. But I agree, similar to Lithicum/Leigh, it just seems like some of these young OL hit a wall early in their careers.

If big, muscular, and fast defensive linemen are able to run around and/or overpower large, slower offensive linemen, then why do teams continue insisting on that type of linemen?
Doesn’t this make an argument for slightly lighter linemen who are faster and more mobile?

I’m not sure. Maybe tackles need to be able to overpower DEs and can sacrifice speed since they already know where they need to protect spatially. Maybe athletes chose to play the other side of the line, ie DL, for NFL odds/payday over OL that leads to an unbalanced talent gap. Haven’t really given it thought but good questions.

Wait. This is brilliant. We have an insane pedigree at DL/DE, as well as talent and recruiting out the wazoo.
Let's just double those scholarships, and then we can have twice as many guys play both ways like in the old days. An offensive line that attacks like the Power Rangers would be a nightmare...
Let's do this!!

take those explosive players... make them have to remember plays. Then make them remember a snap count. Then make them have to remember the snap count when the play is changed at the line. Then remember who they are supposed to block. Then change that to something else when the defense move a second before the snap.
And then on top of that have them not know if that play is going to be a run or a pass (RPO).

But your post illustrates to me that our offense has possibly gotten too complex. All the pre-snap reads, RPO decisions, etc. require many different people remembering a bunch things, then executing the right things, all at the same time. Seems like a recipe for disaster without a team full of smart, experienced, and very talented players.
Perhaps this is why Streeter talked a lot about getting rid of the plays that don’t work, and focusing on mastering the ones that do.
I am certainly not arguing for a bland, predictable offense. But your post made me wonder if what we’ve been doing isn’t optimal.

What I described is just normal life for OL. You have to be able to handle it mentally as well as the physical component.
Complex is not exactly the word that comes to my mind when thinking about our offense. But that's just me.

I agree, there are definitely more mechanics and nuance involved on the offensive line as you pointed out well.
Our defense, and our DL, is accustomed to a lot of stunts, misdirection's, and LOS adjustments so I want to be careful not to minimalize their mind discipline as well...
Given our program's strength, I honestly believe we can be doing a better job of recruiting and then coaching more elite O-linemen, whether that be from an athletic, mental, character, experience standpoint, etc. I totally appreciate that our coaches develop our players, I think that is a hallmark of Clemson Football. But every once in awhile wouldn't it be nice to just get a pure monster on the O-line, like Bresee did for the D?
I'm definitely preaching to the choir now, but I definitely think Coach Austin has a lot of program-levers he can pull, and should be encouraged to do so. Exciting stuff for the boys in the trenches!

Running game.
The tackle is a different animal all together. They have to have lateral agility and feet that you normally don’t see in a giant human being.
Development wise. We probably aren’t the best. Scheme wise, it is simply not OL friendly. We are finally getting under center and you can see the immediate improvement of called runs between the tackles. Running out of the RPO is difficult. It puts our OL at a disadvantage. DJ can’t make the read anyway. Just call run plays imo. If you get down in a 3 point stance and fire off the ball it doesn’t matter if the defense knows it’s coming. You can always get a yard or two. short yardage issues have plagued us, you can’t win short yardage from a 2 pt stance. Arrogant of Tony to say “we don’t do that”. That would be fine if we could actually run the ball Tony.
Did I mention I don’t care for Tony? I’m exited to see what Streeter can do. I like his changes already.. because they were the OBVIOUS moves.
