Interesting take from Elliot Re: Etienne touches

Sep 10, 2018, 10:39 PM

Just an observation pertaining play calling

"You just want to get the playmakers the ball," Elliott said. "The tough thing about the other night is 59 plays, you don't have many snaps to distribute the ball. And then when you're not playing ahead of the chains, you're not in rhythm, you're just tying to find some chunk plays."

Interesting take due to the fact that Kelly Bryant had 15 rush attempts and was in the game for 44 out of the 59 plays, yet our starting running back and one of our top playmakers only had 8 carries the whole game.

Saturday was an abomination in play calling. There really is no other way to say it

NO, that's not it.

Sep 10, 2018, 10:44 PM

The coaches can call any variation of the option read or ROP and KB ends up keeping the ball. He can't think when everyone starts moving. He rarely takes his eyes off his primary and just like Tajh he usually goes directly from his primary to his check down man if the primary is covered.

Touchdown to Overton was a RPO

I've been telling you guys for a year...

Sep 10, 2018, 10:42 PM

KB can't run the freaking option read or the ROP. When he get's pressure his default is to keep the ball. I think he's afraid of turning it over or something. I don't know but if you'll go watch the film you'll see it for yourself.

Why the hail do you think I'd say throw TL in the fire and let it go at that?

You sound quite spirited on this CT88

Sep 10, 2018, 10:50 PM

I agree that KB does not go through progressions and keeps the ball way too often. One thing you touched on that is a positive (against any team but Bama) about Bryant is his reluctance to take chances. He's a game manager - probably by the coaches design.

Regarding TL, he's not ready for big time ball yet. He doesn't have the poise DW4 had as a freshman.

I don’t agree that TL isn’t ready...

Sep 10, 2018, 11:48 PM

Watson also had some freshman moments his first few games. I agree that KB is a game manager and he wins games; but what happens when we get to the playoffs again and have to play Bama or OSU?

I’m not saying one or the other should exclusively play, I do think for now that a split combo is good, but now that we are past A&M the next few games don’t look tough. We could play TL and also win those games. We could play chase Brice and win those games.

Remember that first drive DW4 had against UGA

Sep 10, 2018, 11:58 PM

When he threw that pass between two Georgia helmets to Charone Peake? Was a thing of beauty. I think TL has the talent, and he'll get there. Right now he's not there. That TD he threw to Higgins was nice, but he's looked a lot like a freshmen in other moments.

Think the coaches are handling this situation much better than they did with Stoudt/Watson. They keep it up and Lawrence should be ready if we play Bama again. Right now KB is the best option

Ridiculous comment

Sep 11, 2018, 7:01 AM

I get you’re not as high on TL but to suggest he isn’t ready asked upon a very small sample size is hyperbole at best. Is TL as good a runner as KB? No. That’s about the only viable assessment you could make to date in KBs favor.

Re: Ridiculous comment

If you think we'd have beaten aTm with TL at qb, you're kidding yourself. He made a nice throw but it became obvious very quickly that the moment was too big. Is he going to be a great quarterback? Absolutely! Is he the future of the program? You betcha! Is he ready to run the show in situations like last Saturday night? Not even close. I agree with your assessment that we should play him more in the coming weeks so that by the end of the season he may be ready for Georgia or Alabama. But Dabo made the right decision against aTm and secured the win. So give credit where credit is due. That is, unless you're a multi-million dollar per year head football coach in disguise who will do a better job than our current coach is doing. If that describes you, contact the AD and ask for Dabo's job. Go Tigers!

liability...but running plays set up for TL is a waste of a play. Its a set run play to an RB (not RPO)or its play action passes for him.... if we want RPO then put KB in. The reason why KB looked better was bc it was the style of offense that suits him. KB can make a move and get away from defenders b/c he's a natural runner. Forcing TL to be a natural runner is a waste of time. He may be quicker than we all think but he's not going to run a 35 yard sprint against a blitz and juke to get 5 more at the end like KB. But he will pass to Tee on a 35 yard jump ball, a slant, or a out pass better than KB.

TL should hardly ever run. It should be playaction and quick passes if he's not handing it off...

But yeah, if you're going to blindly just call the same playbook then we have no choice but to keep KB b/c he's going to give us the best chance to win in that system.

It's true, if you went back and watched all of our zone read plays there are plenty of examples where the RB should have gotten the ball and didn't.

Our rpo looks lost.. we have such little success with it I'm really not sure how it's supposed to look.

Hard to gameplay for a team for which you have very little film. You’ll recall that this year aTm has a different coach & OC, so our staff had precious little to go on to develope said gameplan.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We shouldn't be adjusting our plan to the other team.

Sep 11, 2018, 4:10 PM

On offense, we need to run what we want to run, and make the other team stop it. With our offensive weapons, there is no reason why we shouldn't have passes all over the field to different WRs and TEs, as well as hand-offs and pitches to our RBs. Spread the wealth! If the defense is taking something away, fine, but until they stop something, get the ball in the hands of our playmakers!

I think if ETN touched the ball more, our snap count

that bad parts of the playcalls were very similar to

Sep 11, 2018, 12:21 PM

when we were playing alabama. Alot of RPO adn screen passes b/c we were afraid or not confident in our downfield attack. Last year i attributed that to deon cain being our only downfield threat at 6-2 but this year we have experience at 6-5 on both sides of the field, along with a safety valve in renfrow and rodgers. He's got buku playmakers so much so that I think you just throw jump balls to the tall guys in single coverage or backshoulder throws. If they're stacking the box to stop the run then you have that all freakin day. USE IT!!

Higgins had 3 catches.....3! Thats stupidity and it kills me that we aren't utilizing that guy. Its game 2..please tell me they will make those easy changes and then use them in big games not just use them against sorry teams but go back to scared against teams we need to score against.

I think Deshaun was given enough rope to audible out if he saw something. And i think KB just runs the plays regardless. Who knows. But PLEASE start throwing to Higgins more. Dude is ready to produce huge numbers and 3 catches is just dumb on our part.

Re: that bad parts of the playcalls were very similar to

Sep 11, 2018, 3:08 PM

The fact that Higgins and Etienne combined only got around 11 or 12 touches is terrible. Also with Feaster and the other running backs we have not getting hardly any touches is also ridiculous.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: that bad parts of the playcalls were very similar to

Sep 11, 2018, 3:31 PM

The reason we're always behind the chains is they continually throw on first down or run the QB which has turned predictable. Chicken and egg scenario.

It doesn't have to be old school power-I formation running game, but this spread offense running from the shotgun look we've had since Morris drives me nuts. I fully realize this coincides with longest period of success the program has seen, but I can't stand how we can't establish the run.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Our coaches' fascination with running the QB

Sep 11, 2018, 3:39 PM

is hard for me to understand.

Can KB run? Yes. Should that be a focal point of our offense? Not in my opinion, since we have Etienne, Feaster, and Dixon at RB who are better runners, as well as Higgins, Rodgers, Renfrow, etc. at WR.

Our offensive stats last year - which were mediocre - coupled with our sad offensive performances against quality defenses, suggest that we need to do something different than what we have been doing.

Re: Our coaches' fascination with running the QB

Sep 11, 2018, 4:20 PM

I think this is simpler than we make it... If TL is made The Man... then when we designate a run, he hands it to one of 4 Great Runners...When we designate a pass, TL throws it to a receiver or he heaves it out of bounds... If he gets caught where 1 and 2 don't happen, then tuck and run..
