a player, but as an assistant little league baseball coach, I can tell you there is nothing wrong with this approach. It's not common, but there are some kids who respond better to this kind of motivation. In team sports, you have to tear kids down so you can rebuild them the way you know they need to be. For some kids all it takes is a stern look, others need a good scolding in the dugout, but some need a little more. And whether that little more is calling out a player on the field after a tough loss, doing it on the team Facebook page, or not giving the kid a trophy at the end of season team party, the result is the same. And that result is a soft kid, who let his teammates and coaches down, will have the foundation needed to be successful in life. And while he may have failed at sports, that foundation is a gift the coach is giving a kid that no one will ever be able to take away. As a fellow coach (and not some team dad clown coach in jeans and cleats, I have coached All Stars as well) I applaud Dabo for having the courage to do what needed to be done.

Dabo humiliated LJD without some back story. If you are going to tell the public that he "Needs to grow up" then what did he do? Without knowing the whole story he's making LJD look bad.
Dabo should have pulled a Belichick and just said we're working through some things to help LJD out and left it at that.
It's okay to love Dabo but understand that he doesn't walk on water. The same goes for CJ Spiller. Dabo kinda put this on CJ which is another problem because now it makes everyone wonder if CJ's being new to coaching might be the problem and needs to be more flexible.
Either tell the whole story or say little to nothing at all.
Dabo knows he can sleep walk through this season and have LJD fresh and ready if we make the playoffs.
The real question is if LJD's issues are so bad with CJ that after game 4 does he take his marble and leave?

there aren't tens of thousands of people asking me what the heck is going on with my kid. But if there were tens of thousands of people asking, and my kid was doing something immature that was affecting others, I'd have no problem saying he/she needed to grow up, and leaving it at that.

If Clemson FB had just come off a championship season with another Natty, not many would be saying a word about how Dabo has handled this situation LJD. In fact, most would be saying that what Dabo does works bc, he is winning National Championships. How soon do we forget!!!!

Couldn't agree more. In fact, I tell my wife that a young team is just like a kennel full of dogs who must be trained. Sometimes that means beatings, or wearing muzzles, or sometimes just a nice belly scratch. She agreed immediately when I blew her whistle.

both as a coach and as a Scout leader. By and large, at least in my experience, kids these days do not respond well to this approach. Most of them simply aren't accustomed to it since they rarely sees it in their world of everyone gets a participation trophy so nobody gets their feelings hurt. Moms and Dads don't like it either. Their preference is to micromanage every aspect of their kids lives so the kiddos never have to experience any sort of hardship or disappointment. That said, I am a firm believer in the praise in public and reprimand/discipline in private philosophy.

First of all I want to say I have been and will continue to pray for LJD as he goes through this difficult time in his life. I pray he will be able to overcone whatever adversity he is facing so he can have success on the field as well as in life. He is not the first nor will he be the last young man to spend time in the love shack or the dog house. We have to remember, while these young men are highly gifted and skilled, they are still trying to find their way in life. They are under incredible pressure to perform to extremely high standards. We all know Dabo recruits players for their ability to play the game but we also know he chooses those who do well off the field. All of you Tigers who have coached a team, I don't care what sport, age or level of ability, you know one player with a bad attitude or one who shows disrespect to their coach and his rules, will affect the team in a negative way. Every coach handles those situations differently, but the goal is to help the player learn to become a good and productive part of the team.
So as a Tiger who is truly ALL IN ALL THE TIME, and one who knows absolutely nothing about coaching, I am going to trust and give 100 % support to the culture and the coaches who have made Clemson Tiger football the Elite program it is today no matter what the scoreboard says at the end of the game. Let's All get behind our Tigers this Saturday and really show them some love and suppprt.

FYI information, some people would call it hairy lip, maybe cleft lip but with minor surgery or rehab, it's completely curable. Exaggeration? I would hope it's not all perversion.

Thanks for everyone's fun responses! For a minute my fear of posting came back to haunt me. I'll tell y'all about myself and my family. My husband and I are 60 years old and have been married 41 years. We have one son, Matthew, who is a critical care nurse practitioner. I have worked as a unit co ordinator for 38 years, 26 in the Emergency department and the last 12 in an open heart unit. My husband has his own auto repair business as well as building award winning game calls. We live in Forest City, a lovely small town in NC. We attended our first Tiger football game as children with a group from our church. We have been part of the Tiger family ever since.

I am not sure if it's allowed to share my husbands business name on the board but I'll be happy to give you the info. They make every call custom and by hand. Predator and game calls are featured on their web site. They use traditional and exotic wood. They also have very satisfied customers who are happy to share their success using the calls.

LJD has been at Clemson for quite a while. If he is still having an issue it is doubtful it is a new one. Maybe Dabo has tried lots of other approaches and none worked so he tried the nuclear option. Dabo has a history of being a player's coach who cares about the person as much as the player/results. I doubt he would just throw LJD under the bus unless he felt it was a warranted lesson.

Couldn't agree more. Some times a good charley horse with your knee to their thigh helps. You should never use your fist or evens hand for that matter, but a good charley horse to the thigh will have them contemplating their mistake for a few days. Keep up the good work coach. They will thank you one day when they are older and strong.

Here’s the deal - working with young people - particularly one that our university has invested thousands of dollars to develop as a student and athlete - ain’t fun sometimes but in the end so worth it.

Dabo stands to lose a lot of money holding these young men to discipline when those on the outside can see the situation so much better.
In this case he needs to kick with Obed or admit he’s wrong & take the advice from the real people developers on Tigernet!
Maybe David Hood could load all the wisdom & advice from Tigernet put a bow on it & deliver to Dabo or Tony Elliott.
