The ACC needs more Beef, not White Meat!

Jul 23, 2021, 2:23 PM

I'm stealing the words of the legendary Coach Frank Howard, the ACC needs more beef. In the past, The only beef in the conference was Florida State Clemson Virginia Tech and Miami. Now those teams are mediocre at best. (Except for Clemson) Clemson needs a true rival in the ACC. And I don't see Miami Florida State or Virginia Tech improving much of the next several years. So one of the ACC's options? Well...not a lot. Penn State should be the first phone call. But I doubt they would leave the Big Ten. Cincinnati and Central Florida would just be more white meat, even if they are good. ND will likely not join. The only other option I see is West Virginia. Not my top choice, but they do love football. But I would prefer a team with a 70,000 plus stadium. But just don't know if one is available.

Texas Tech is the beef you want.

Texas Tech would be better than Cincinnati for sure.

Have you ever been to Lubbock?

It's worse than Waco.

Texas Tech owns the DFW market. It has over 40K students and the only school in Texas with a medical and law school on campus and is building a vet school.

If the ACC doesn't get them - somebody will.

Texas Tech's academics are not impressive.

Jul 23, 2021, 2:45 PM

They are ranked the 217th national university by USN&WR.

We mercilessly give Louisville hard time for their academics, and they are well ahead of Texas Tech at 176th.

Obviously conference expansion is driven by money first, but you're kidding yourself if you don't think that the ACC is still going to consider all factors (including academics).

Plus, Lubbock is a long long way from most ACC schools. It would add a significant travel burden.

In addition to being a poor geographic fit, I don't think the Red Raiders are a great cultural fit either.

If we need a warm body to fill a seat, then I'd consider them. But we can hopefully do much better.

In terms of Texas schools, I'd much prefer Baylor or TCU over Texas Tech.

Distance? You mean like BC to Miami?

Cultural fit? What does that mean?

USN&WR rankings? Really? I saw one time they had Erskine in there - with all due respect to dear old Erskine.

Baylor and TCU bring nothing.

Academic rankings do matter. It is all about which schools are considered one's peer.

Miami and BC have a good bit of history and both do have quasi-overlapping alumni bases (ie private metro schools that draw nationally). But distance is to other partners - so BC to Cuse, Pitt, and then maryland. Miami is in the same boat as FSU, GT and us. As a grouping, the ACC expansion schools do/did have history with other members - like Clemson and BC. At the time Pitt and Maryland and even Pitt played GT, Duke, etc as an independent previously. Cuse is probally the oddest bird but they were never a big football school.

Cultural fit? Do I need to explain that one? If you don't see the cultural fit between us, GT, NC State, Wake and even VT, well IDK.

What about Oklahoma State?

Jul 23, 2021, 2:26 PM

TBP stadium only holds about 56,000 though.
