Never happen. They would be voting against their best interest and not for our best interest.

The republicans tried with the Contract with America

but the democrats shot it down because it needed 2/3rds vote.

In 1995 the supreme court invalidated State's rights to impose term limits. Who knows, now that the supreme court is conservative something like that may pass.

It's not an easy process, but a 28th Constitutional Amendment would do it. It will take a grass roots movement to make this happen. very few of the hogs slopping at the trough in DC would vote themselves out of a job.

Someone else pointed out recently in a similar thread that a system will develop to take the place of long terms if limits are imposed. Whether it be a Member-in-waiting or whatever, something would pop up.

But, the good news is that it would take a while for such a thing to mature to its full evilness. So might get a few good years out of term limits.

The US Constitution establishes the qualifications for Representatives and Senators. Any other qualifications (number of term served) would require a Constitutional Amendment.

If you really want to get corrupt and/or incompetent politicians out of office, these things are more effective (& allow us to continue to vote for really good representatives).

1. Reduce the influence of big money in elections. To start get rid of "dark money" which allows the rich to game the system while never being able to be called out on it. Set stricter campaign donation limits and restrictions. If you really want politicians to represent the people, have publicly financed campaigns - the money we spent would be more than worth it in getting competent and uncompromised representatives.

2. Stop lobbyists from being able to game the system - stricter lobbying regulations and the teeth necessary to enforce them.

3. Competitive districts - if you want bright young people with good and moderate ideas, you have to draw Congressional districts so as to be more competitive - or at least neutral.

I am not for term limits. I can remember a time when we repeatedly elected people because they were doing a great job. I don't want to give up on that. Plus, if you establish term limits, big money will find a way to game that system, too. Git big money out of politics and make elections about ideas rather than cash.
