My first year at Clemson, and I was still in the Army Reserves. We drilled that weekend at Camp Croft in Spartanburg, so didn’t even get to listen to it, but watched the replay at 11:00 pm(?) that night in the dayroom. What a game, though.
Still remember one of the guys seeing us, who laughed and asked if we thought the game would turn out different ‘this time’. Guess he was the first coot I ever came across….
Thanks for the share! Still a great memory.
GO TIGERS!!!

And the Coots still watch replays thinking they will win this time! Their only hope!

My very first Clemson football game. I fell in love that day. Later would apply to only 1 college: Clemson University.

I was there. My family has been season ticket holders since I was about 4. That was 50 years ago.

Thanks for sharing this! I was there with my parents. I remember we played at ND a couple of years later and won. My dad and I went to Clemson and watched that game on closed circuit television in Littlejohn because it was not televised. Good memories.

The first really big game in our modern era

no one really knew who we were when we lost the opener to #10 Maryland or won at Jawja. Ranked for the first time in many years. Classic 1PM start and the roads jammed at 7:30 AM. Great game too!

Who knew we were watching one of the best QBs to ever play the game that day. Not to mention all of the Clemson connections that went with him. I relish those days in D3 watching the crowds come down the hill headed to the stadium.

Started 5 games for the '85 Bears when Jim McMahon was hurt and went 4-1. JK, know you were talking about Joe Montana. Funny that Tim Bourret was still at Notre Dame that year but was working for Clemson in '79 when we played up there.

I was there - it was my sophomore year. I still have my ticket stub too. it was a big deal to have them there. Until that year we had had a pretty lousy run since the Sugar Bowl in the late 50s, and this was the first really good team since then.
You’ve heard Dabo play the “little ole Clemson” card? This was it, for real. ND thought they’d come in and wipe the floor with us, and the thing I’ve never forgotten about that day was that Dan Devine was an absolute jerk on sidelines. He couldn’t believe we were hanging with them, in fact leading until late third quarter if I remember correctly. He was screaming at officials, his team, it was bad. Hated losing that one. But it was the start of things to come.

C-L-E-M-S-O-N around the entire stadium using different sections for each letter.
So much fan enthusiasm in those days after the 17 year bowl drought!
The cheerleaders and “Mic Man” were very creative and energetic in those days and the fans caught on.

Our cheerleaders are not what they used to be. I can barely remember any times we spelled out C-L-E-M-S-O-N around the stadium or Clemson - Tigers back and forth from side to side this past season. Need to get back to that.
I remember the crowd at this game was quiet as a mouse until the team ran down the hill, then the stadium erupted. It was part of a "quiet out" pre-game. If I recall correctly, Tiger Band even marched their pre-game in silence without playing. Fans simulated clapping their hands over their heads but stopped short of touching hands and remained silent.
The place was as loud as I can ever remember Death Valley (even though there were no upper decks in those days) and the fans brought the energy the whole day. Never not loud once the "silent out" period ended. Needless to say is made an amazing impression on this young high school student. 45 years later my love for Clemson still burns brightly.

Who would do me the honor so the moment is commemorated in this post rather than just pass by in some other random post ?! Much appreciation to my fellow T Netters for liking my posts over the years. T Net has been a lot of fun and provided a little distraction when life was stressful.
Thank You !

I was a sophomore in high school. Mom and dad packed my sister and I lunch to take to the hill. They had seats but had us on that hill at 10:30 that morning for the 1 o’clock kick. Special day for sure. Two cheers I remember that were tailored for the Irish that day. 1) white shirts, gold britches, we gonna beat those son of a #####’s 2) cigarette ashes, cigarette butts, we got the Irish by the ###’s, so pull team pull! Not sure why those stuck all these years but what a fun day besides the loss.
