(Teaser/possibility/truth) A thought about Saban, Dabo & Bama job.

Jan 2, 2022, 10:15 PM

Saban just turned 70 in Oct and next week he may win another Natty, 7th in last 13 years i believe.

Now, with my having been 70 ten years ago i know that i still had a lot of spunk and didn’t feel much slowdown til 75 (when I fell off ladder onto concrete drive, broke back, crushed wrist, messed up rotor cup & elbow)..and then i dropped down a notch or two physically but still was & still am feisty, active & exercise to this day, at 80.

So, based on my personal experience i can see Saban going 2-5 more years easily health-wise.

But, maybe this possible Natty win will get him to think about a final 2-3 more year working plan and then retire, if he doesn’t want to coach til age 75.

With that a possibility, say retiring in 5 years..that would find Dabo Swinney at age 55-56, the exact same age that Saban was when he took over at Bama.

Ah aah..do you see where I’m going!

With the way things have been going in the coaching ranks, loyalty or not, I can easily see & expect Bama calling on Dabo then..and I can easily see him going there since he’d have given Clemson all he could, his boys having graduated and the old school is calling.

Think this is insane?

Hey, I watched Brent Venables, who didn’t play for Oklahoma but just coached there 13 years..throw off that orange paw cap so quick to put on his old familiar Sooner cap he’d kept and grin a $7,5000,000 smile that could be seen for 5 miles.

Saying, be ready for Dabo Swinney to be at Bama 3-5 years from now..

but b/4 he leaves Lil Ole ROY BUS ClemPson he will try his dang best to win another natty or two for the Clemson Tigers!

Are You prepared?

And What say youse?

Go TiGERS!

I would be shocked. It would make little sense and if it happened

I think he would regret it fairly quickly thereafter, though we would never know it.

Completely. Disagree.

The big thing Oklahoma could offer Venables was money. Yes, he was making really, really good money coordinating the D here - $2.5 million, if memory serves - but he just signed a 6-year, $7-million-a-year deal at Oklahoma that increases $100K every February, and it undoubtedly includes a substantial buyout clause.

That's life-changing dough. Unless a disaster happens he'll get two years for certain, probably three, though frankly I doubt he goes longer than that mostly because he's a first-time head coach jumping into the SEC, and while the competition is going to change from Texas Tech and Kansas to, you know, Alabama, LSU, Georgia, Florida, week-in-and-week-out, the expectations at Oklahoma certainly aren't going to change. If Brent makes it four years I'll be shocked, that coaching gig is the definition of a "poisoned chalice", and he's probably a walking dead man before he ever gets on campus unless he just destroys it better than any first-time head coach has a right to.

But even if BV makes it three years, he banks $21 million dollars. Plus buyout. It'd take him at least a decade to make that at Clemson. And at that point, he really is set for life.

Oh, and by the way, he isn't selling his Clemson lake house. Friends of his have confirmed: he's keeping it.

I don't think he thinks he's going to be there forever.

Dabo isn't in nearly the same boat. Yeah, Bama could probably offer him more money. There's also that moving-into-the-SEC problem, and at Alabama, once again, he'd be the guy following the legend, the caretaker of that legend's program, the unfortunate guy who has to follow the most successful coach in college football history...yes, even more so than Bear Bryant. And Dabo, unlike Brent, isn't just a low-tier millionaire...by the point such a thing becomes an issue he'll have banked a bare-bones minimum of close to $100 million from Clemson...sure, 'Bama could probably offer him close to $10 million a year, but at that point...what's the point?

Also, Bama's culture is nothing like Clemson's culture, and "The Process" is so embedded at Bama now it'd take an act of God to change it. Dabo isn't ever going to play or win that way. The next coach at Bama is absolutely going to be a Process coach and Saban arch-disciple, it isn't going to be grinning Dabo and his feel-good family-and-love vibe. Bama is a cold pristine machine.

Do not see it, Bill.

Your last paragraph sums it all up. Culture. He ain't doing it the Bama way, nor should he. Things would really have to go south here before he'd go anywhere else. He's loyal, perhaps to a fault. I could see him retiring and coaching HS before going anywhere else.

Now, as for BV. I totally disagree with you on that one. I think he builds a dynasty in Oklahoma that will rival Bama. He'll have an easier time recruiting than Dabo will. He's crushing it now. Reeled in another big fish today. A stud rb that everyone wanted... For some reason we didn't pursue him.

Don't want to hijack your thread Bill, but I would like to hear what quozzel thinks about our recruiting woes. Sounds like we're missing on Trevor ETN. Going after a 3* Mikey Dukes rb.

4 star RB would be a longshot, where is the PT? It would have to be a guy willing to redshirt unless there are a slew of injuries.

Why do you think Bama is taking a portal guy to be their starting RB? 4-5 star deep depth is basically going to be an anomaly everywhere for and extended period of time as they'll just transfer out. You're better off getting a 3 star guy like a Gallman, McDowell who is willing to develop

Time will only tell and nobody can ever really know what's in Dabo's head. Every time this topic comes up I ask the same question - "Why would Dabo leave Clemson, where he is already a legend who built his legacy, to take a job where his absolute ceiling is being the 3rd greatest coach in program history?"

I think Dabo MAY have designs on going to Bama to ride off into the sunset, but I DON'T think he'd follow Saban. Just my opinion, of course, but the first coach after Saban would be fired after their first 9 win season. I don't think Dabo wants any part of that. Be the coach that follows the coach AFTER Saban...

Did you miss the part where the OP is at least 75 years old? My hope is that he’s comfortably retired and enjoying all of his free time.

Clemson doesn't care about basketball....as evidenced by Brown-L getting 14 years.

LBB said he was 70 ten years ago so that makes him 80 and I wholeheartedly agree. He has earned the right to spend his time however he wants.

Brent Venables comparison, BV had been shunted aside at Oklahoma for one of Bob Stoops brothers. Yet, he forgot all that and went back there to be their Head Coach, when they called.

Dabo got let go from Alabama once, but, after all this time, he seems to have nothing but reverence for Bama, AND, unlike BV, Bama IS Dabo's Alma Mater.

So, if Bama truly does come calling when Saban retires, it will be very hard for Dabo not to respond and "go home", as it were.

But, in our favor, Dabo has always blazed his own trail, so I do not think that decision would be automatic by any means. I believe it would hinge just as much on what happens here at Clemson in the intervening years.
