Teams dropping out like flies

Dec 26, 2021, 8:13 PM

Team cancellations of bowl games continue to rise. How many cancelled so far? Five?

I count 4 on ESPN.com

Dec 26, 2021, 8:29 PM

EasyPoint Hawaii Bowl (Memphis v Hawaii)
Sun Bowl (Miami v Wash St)
Fenway Bowl (SMU v UVA)
Military Bowl (BC v ECU)

Although I guess the Gator Bowl counts also since it’s not a team that earned the bid. So yeah, five. Four involving ACC teams. Odd.

These teams that accepted a bowl bid and then dropped out should not receive a cut of the bowl earnings. They could have contributed and chose not to. To me that should disqualify them from their portion of the payout! Tigers should've left the %#$! Show of a conference years ago!!!

Typical reactions and is why we cannot get rid of COVID. COVID is real and until people realize that fact, things will continue to get worse. It will be amazing if many more games are not cancelled and with the Christmas spike that will surely come, there may be huge issues with basketball in a couple of weeks

Yeah let’s cancel life due to a strain of the cold. ####.

Clemson doesn't care about basketball....as evidenced by Brown-L getting 14 years.

Umm.. they won't "receive a cut", because there are no earnings from bowl games that aren't played.

The ACC pools the earnings from all bowl games and splits them among all ACC schools. What they are saying is that the schools that “opt out” of their bowl games should not receive their portion of the pooled payout. Make sense now?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Weird…seems protocols have not kept up with reality of present risks.

Dec 26, 2021, 8:48 PM [ in reply to I count 4 on ESPN.com ]

But that’s pretty easy to say_ but exactly what should be different is not so easy.

Real question here

Dec 26, 2021, 9:12 PM

How many bowls were cancelled last year when we didn't have a vaccine? Same protocols were in effect. Same warnings about gathering together for Thanksgivving and Christmas.

The spike didn't occur until January 2021, but a spike in cases is a meaningless stat. Hospitalizations and deaths have not risen. That's the only metric that matters. The NFL's lead physician has stated asymptomatic people are not transmitting the virus. With Omicron, a large portion are asymptomatic. Even the more deadly variants posed miniscule risk to healthy, younger people, with exceptions noted.

Do we honestly believe we have the power to keep people from catching a virus? Because the history of these 2 years shows pretty clearly, we don't.

Re: Real question here

Dec 26, 2021, 10:03 PM

Timely administration of a 'cocktail' of therapeutic components should always have been the regimen for treating COVID. For the (as evidence has shown) non-deadly Omicron variant, the medical authorities have preferred to play it safe by embracing political narratives instead of following the science.

Had our medical authorities been quicker on the draw (or not so committed to what has become their comfortable narrative that all Covid variants are deadly) ... and deployed their resources towards having widespread access to proven therapeutics instead of pushing for incompletely tested (EUA) dangerous vaccines, then none of these bowl cancellations or lockdowns would have occurred.

One size doe not fit all; not all COVID variants bear the same risks.

Epic fail by the USA medical authorities, and sports fans / regular people hoping for holiday season family get-togethers are paying the emotional price.

Too bad it didn't happen at once. Then you really could have swapped teams.

Wake v SMU would have been interesting.

Dec 26, 2021, 8:53 PM

Any bowl not connected to the playoff will see dwindling sponsors sooner rather than later in the years to come. Covid is the final feather that causes the cart to tip and collapse.

Sad!
As a person that likes football in general; it's sad to see.

I know many criticize the number of bowl games - I get that. But, the extra practice honestly is what this thing is about. You can play/practice basketball all year in different leagues. Baseball is harder but there are some options to keep you hitting/catching/pitching! Football is unique in that you just have to do "IT"! Limited spring practices and when fall hits your practice times are limited once school starts. These bowl practices have changed the fortunes of many teams programs moving forward past the actual bowl game: "including Clemson"!

That Russell Athletic Bowl win was huge for us! That win over Ohio State in the Orange Bowl was huge for us and propelled us to the: "if Clemson is good despite being in the ACC; they can play with anybody" conversation! Otherwise it would have been; their schedule is too weak and we never would have gotten the opportunity to prove it on the field.

So, I am thankful for the non-playoff bowl games! And, sad to see these cancellations! These schools got their practice in though! Many coaches have said, "they don't care as much about the game as they do the extra practice time allotted for bowl teams"!

Hopefully, the majority of bowl games won't be cancelled.

I love em. But if FB is on, I'm watching.

This is going to hurt revenue. I don't think the teams that don't play should get split bowl money.

What are the odds that our game gets cancelled?

Dec 26, 2021, 9:03 PM

It would suck, but I'd almost be shocked if we play at this point. Fingers crossed!

Clemson is only testing unvaccinated players. There are very few of them so I don’t see a scenario where Clemson cannot or will not play. Don’t know how Iowa St is handling it, but if they can play I think the Tigers will be ready to go.

Re: Teams dropping out like flies

Dec 26, 2021, 9:08 PM

It’s affected the NFL as well with quite a few games rescheduled. I’ve seen more 3rd string QB’s and others just signed to be able to even play. The Saints just reached out to Drew Brees and Phillip Rivers (both retired) to see if they would play the Monday night game for them. It will continue through the remainder of the CFB and NFL seasons. It shouldn’t be surprising at this point.

If things are this dire

Dec 26, 2021, 10:03 PM

why are fans still being allowed to attend games? If asymptomatic people are a risk, why the full stadiums, arenas, movie theaters, etc.
