Targeting.

Jan 2, 2021, 10:40 AM

Does anyone remember the hit Amari took going up to make a catch in the LSU game and he got nailed from behind. Maybe it wasn’t with the crown of the helmet but I thought at the time that looks more dangerous than a lot of target on calls.

I believe the "targeting rule" is probably the worse rule in football and also changes the momentum of a game drastically. I'm not talking about the call in last nights game specifically but "targeting" in genera. I've seen so many times as was the case last night, when a player lowers his shoulder to make the hit, he ball carriers body position changes in the split second before contact and the defender's helmet then makes first contact with the ball carrier/receiver. So when we it is reviewed in "frame by frame" replay, you can definitely see that APPEARS the defender led with this headgear. This is wrong, for all teams and players not just Clemson. Finally the penalty is too severe, it's like giving someone the death penalty for shoplifting a candy bar!! This rule should be thoroughly discussed/challenged and drastically changed before next season, JMO!

We didn't complain last year when TL faked it and we got their guy ejected. Wade I believe. Twas a game changer.

That (the hit to TL) was helmet to helmet which is specifically addressed in the targeting rule... he still should not have been ejected for the play. They need to do some work on the rule, it's vague and too severe for routine hits. Tell me what "forceable contact" is in the context of the rules? Its not in there... hits to the body are not specifically addressed and the examples in the rules book all state "launching" as the pretext, again an undefined act.

What makes you say TL faked it last year?
It looked to me that he got his bell rung.

The Rule as it pertains to football is horrible. But the way the rule is written, Leading with the crown of the helmet is everything.

Yes, If Skalski just keeps his face up (for his protection) there is no targeting.

I would be happy to see the rule and the penalty re-studied, but it IS for player safety.
