Talent on Team

Jan 28, 2022, 11:43 PM

I've been a long time reader of Tnet, of both the main articles and the user boards. I have never posted until now, but decided I would put my two cents in for whatever that is worth. I have been reading at on here lately about how bad our recruiting has been this year, and while I cannot completely disagree that it has not been up to par this year by our standards, I do still think we will be OK. I believe we will get back on track next year. And when looking at our roster and their former recruiting rankings by the major services, we still have an ample amount of talent on this team. We are loaded with 4 and 5 star kids, even with all the transfers. There is not a lack of talent on this team and I think we will get back to our dominant ways these next few years. In 2017 we only signed 14 players that year and had the 22nd ranked class per 247, it was similar to this year's class in terms of number of commits. While I know it was intended to sign small that year and not this year, I think we are getting the best we can get at this point and hopefully should finish strong with maybe two more 4 stars coming aboard. I'm putting my opinion out there, and I believe we will be back next year on the field and in recruiting. There's still plenty of reason for hope and I have no doubt we will be back on top. Thanks for letting me share.

I realize some of you may or may not think I'm "sunshine pumping," that is not what I'm doing. Just pointing out that I think there is still plenty to be optimistic about.

Did you only agree because it was a good first post?

If you disagreed could it possibly still be a good first post?

Or do you only think it’s good if you agree? Like this crazy phenomenon called confirmation bias.

This year was planned as a year we would recruit 12-15 players, we lost 3-4 guys top 100 guys) with our Defensive coordinator going to Oklahoma.

The change has benefited us in the challenge to a determined Dabo who loves this, 2 of our recruits are kickers, take their numbers out & we have an outstanding class. Look for the projects & 3 stars to develop a great competition among our best players.

Clemson us going to be a top contender every season with Dabo & crew at work with the culture that Dabo has built.

Progress will show how well Dabo loves the challenge of change & building the program new from the ground up each season.

Look for our offense to improve greatly using the TE’s and running game to open up big plays with our WR’s.

I love DJ & his family, I hope & pray he makes the most progress of any player ever in the offseason the way Deandre Hopkins did but if he doesn’t the freshman from Texas is going to be so special, he has it but will have to mature like Trevor did.

If Trevor had played the last season we would have won the National Championship & not list a game.

I agree and am actually happy with the class. Not sure why folks believe this is unusual for us to get 3 stars. I personally like to have a good mix. I think it makes those they may not have been highly recruited work harder because they feel they need to prove themselves. That kind of mindset can be contagious. Never want all 3 stars but Clemson will get our fair share and we always have. To see where we were at the beginning of December to now with this class has me excited. I’m thinking with some new blood in the coaching ranks and improvement by the offense we could have a very solid year.

Look, just like you had to forget DJ's game against Notre Dame when he had all those weapons and we played an almost perfect game, you have to almost forget about last year when we had record numbers of injuries and transfers. Objective, true fans understand that and trust Dabo

To be fair we didn’t come close to playing a perfect game vs ND, DJ completed about 50% of his but for great yardage, I think we had a fumble/INT by ETN return for a TD and couldn’t run the ball. That said DJ will be much better with more talent around him, and yes trust Dabo.

We had plenty of talent this past year: all except at QB.
I am not saying that everything that went wrong offensively this past season was DJ's fault but when you have no quality back up ,due to injuries or playing time, and your sole starter was 208/374 completions (55.6 %)for 6 yards a throw and only 9 TD passes against 10 picks(2 of which were pick-6) maybe the talent was not really there.
Either that or the coaching staff saw something that wasn't really there.

It was actually ranked 16 by 247, not as bad as you said at 22, but your point stands— this class will still finish higher and we have tons of talent:

The 2022 class being down doesn’t impact next years talent at all. The problem is next year will be loaded with talented 4 and 5 stars all over the field. The year after should follow suit… but the 2023 class will be critical to amass 4 and 5 star ready made talent or that years team will step down. We will have a concern in a few years, especially along DL but the fact freshman are so much further along than past it only takes 1 recruiting class to fix it. We got what we needed this year in a 5 star QB and for 2023 we need top 100 DL badly.

Agree. The sky is not falling. Losing the 4 commits really caused all the damage and imo we have recovered nicely. Couldn’t have planned on losing both coordinators in the same year right before early signing day and Covid keeping recruits off campus probably hurt us more than most. Future is still bright
