Swinney on coach hiring philosophy and tough decisions

Clemson coach Dabo Swinney is holding his weekly call-in show and he was asked about the number of hires within the Clemson family for staff lately and if he could make a tough call with that group if needed. He said the following:
"I can tell ya, I didn't get where I am by not being able to make tough decisions. And hopefully, I didn't get here by making a bunch of bad decisions. So, I've always had Clemson men. Always, from day one. I've always had great Clemson people -- and outside people. It's always been a combination and mixture. Always hire who I think is best for me, best for this program and best for these kids. From time to time, there's always tough decisions and certainly I've had a bunch of them over 13 years. Hopefully, we've made a lot more good ones than bad ones, that's for sure."

New O-line coach wouldn’t be a difficult decision.

Dabo’s track record speaks for itself.

He has made some outstanding hires. The last hard decision he made (firing someone) was many years ago. That’s pretty incredible!
Unfortunately, it is looking like he is going to have another hard one at the end of this season.

I agree with KeoweeIndians. I'd say coach Caldwell's hind quarters are warming up right about now. Only an improved OLine will provide the necessary cooling off.

I agree. Unfortunate as it is, but it is part of the 'game'. I think Coach Caldwell is a great person and a great Clemson Man. Just seems like the game out-grew him.

Robbie's a Furman guy, great person, not lazy and loves his players but our oline technique is terrible and athleticism is suspect. I say we go to the midwest and bring back one of those guys.

The entire D staff is non-Clemson. O staff - all CU but 1.

When the D was going through rebuilding, BV changed things up to stay competitive until the recruits arrived. Offense, well, we do what we do, right? We got who we got.

I hope Dabo is gearing up for several so-called "tough" decisions.

Only 3 coaches on Dabo's coaching staff are not former Clemson or Alabama players. On offense Caldwell (Furman) and Defense Venables (Kansas State) and Reed (BC). The offense is all Clemson with the one exception and the defense is Alabama with the 2 exceptions. This does not count analysts and GAs.

Side note. Kellen Moore’s play calling in Dallas is a thing of beauty. Wonder how much he’s gonna get paid next year…??
