Sweet mash bourbon versus sour mash??

Still sampling and learning different types of bourbon and someone suggested I try a sweet mash versus sour mash for a change. Anyone with a recommendation on a good sweet mash to try? And why sweet mash versus sour mash?

I suggest, if you are becoming a Bourbon Man, get you some JIM BEAM BLACK, and stick with it!

There are very few “sweet mash” bourbons out there. The only one I can remember seeing is Wilderness Trail but I haven’t tried it.
The only difference in the 2 is that sour mash uses “slop” from the previous batch when distilling a new batch. I doubt anyone would be able to tell the difference.

So it would seem sweet mash would be a lot more expensive.
I also love to pair my bourbon with a good cigar.

bourbon, I would think it would be the grain being sweet or sour. A beer that is brewed using spent grain is called a session

There aren't many makers of sweet mash bourbon out there. Castle & Key, Peerless and Wilderness Trail are the only distilleries that really use this process. I had to look it up to see if I had ever tried a sweet mash, and I haven't. https://www.rabbitholedistillery.com/blogs/bourbon-101/what-is-sweet-mash-bourbonWhat Is Sweet Mash Bourbon? WHAT IS SWEET MASH BOURBON? - The process to make sweet mash bourbon or whiskey is as old as the sour mash process. At the same time Catherine Carpenter was recording her sour mash recipe in the early 1800s, she was also notating her sweet mash recipe...
Also Fred Minnick is the self proclaimed bourbon guru and he has reviews of almost everything

My new "daily" bourbon is Rudder's Mill. It is fairly smooth and is a great backyard and cigar drink. Also step up to Noah's Mill for more of a "punch" in my drink.

Wilderness Trail, Peerless, Castle & key, Neeley Family, Hard Truth, and Twin Creeks all use the sweet mash process.
You can select the bugs in the fermentation process and that gives you ultimate control of the flavor.

My son was in Mountain City last week and stopped at a ‘beverage store’ to see what they had. He knew I was wanting some Pappy and the guy working in the store told him he would some today . He called my son this morning and told him he had received a good supply of the 10,15 snd 20 He told my son that he would let him have the 10 year for &95.00 I told him that that was not possible but if they were that cheap buy all he would let you have. My son made the 70 mile trip and called me when he got there amd said the guy he had talked to was off today and the 10 year was $1,400/bottle That is about the going price I’ve been told. Can’t be worth that !

Don't worry about the mash. Some us wheat and most use rye after the 51% corn. Also find a proof you like. Try different ones until you get a list of favorites. Plenty of good ones in the $30 to $55.00 price range. Makers Mark is a wheated one at a decent price. Some other good Bourbons. Four roses small batch. Eagle Rare 10 year. Larceny Small batch.

The bottle I got was 51.2% bute it was the best tasting bourbon I have had under $50 for a 5th. It is not easy to find but if you do, i recommend giving it a try.
