Subtle Strategic Recruiting Change in the Works

May 5, 2018, 3:53 PM

Dabo and coaches have been recruiting at a level unseen in Clemson's history (even the Ford era) over the past five years. It's impressive.

Dabo has balanced and blended recruiting of stars and family/character players very successfully. This year, I see Dabo's recruiting style continue with even more confidence, and there also seems to be a subtle change in his recruiting approach. For example, I see more and more offers being made to younger three star players with growing reputations, more offers being made to out-of-region kids in strategic states with college football powers (e.g. Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, California, Texas, Louisiana, etc.), and even more emphasis on kids from traditional families.

Won't pretend to to be able to explain this subtle recruiting shift, but does anyone else see it? Can anyone explain it? I see pros and cons in expanding the recruiting footprint. Expanding recruiting regions for the right players, and Dabo & coaches seem to know how to pick them, makes sense. Still there is a case to be made for undervalued recruits from SC and the region like Martavis Bryant and Andre Ellington who have outperformed those from Minnesota, Kansas and other regions. And NFL rosters are filled with kids from the Deep South. Any thoughts?

As for the footprint I think it’s an easy explanation. South Carolina as a state isn’t very talented right now for high school players. Georgia’s emergence as a recruiting counterpart to us reduces the kids out of Georgia that we get. Couple that with we are a national brand and we will go get the best players that fit the culture regardless of where they are.

Yeah. Pretty much that.

Doesn't help that Kirby's going Wild West there in the ATL right now and Auburn seems to be upping their game to compete with them - for every action, they say, there is an equal and opposite reaction - and it's actually kind of appalling watching the SEC bagmen strip the like of Grayson bare. Grayson's former head coach is now right up the road at Clemson, and these players are driving by us to commit to, say, Tennessee? Yeah, right. Sounds perfectly legit.

We're never going to win that game, so we might as well do what we do best - get good kids from good families who fit the profile of a "Clemson-type" kid.

We won a national title doing that, might as well keep on doing it. But the threadbare state of South Carolina HS talent is distinctly concerning. Other than Zacch Pickens - who we probably aren't going to get - SC might as well be Delaware this year as far as how much talent is out there. I definitely am in the camp that a lot of that is "brain drain"...high school coaches getting elevated to college analysts-then-position-coaches, and the better South Carolina high school coaches heading to Georgia for bigger dollars. John Ford - the former HC of Roswell, who played for the 7A title the last two years, and now has Buford - was a former Westside position coach from Anderson, and there's a bunch of others.

I have definitely seen it...and agree with this.

Just recently had a friend of mine who is a principal tell me about the $100K+ salary that a head coach is getting at the GA high school level.

There is a huge opportunity here for Clemson. While it will cost them more money and demand more time, the rewards could be multiplied in that, while I do foresee some exposure of schools that do the "Ole Miss" tactics, Clemson would have benefited from taking its brand national. There is no reason to assume Clemson can't or shouldn't. What regional kids and their parents have come to love will just as likely be embraced elsewhere. If they would consider going to school a far distance to attend FSU or Alabama or Ohio State, there is no reason to think that there aren't also some uber-talented players out there who wouldn't fall in love with Clemson. It's a risk to Clemson resource-wise, but if done smartly and strategically, the reason for venturing out may pay dividends for decades to come.

(While this would be a different discussion altogether, obviously a continued focus on economic growth for SC would increase the population and financial health of the state. I hope that is continuing.)

Well said TG85

If you attended school in '85, those were the days. Great memories. If you were born in '85, you saw the team's progress and peaks & valleys of the Bowden years. Either way the present's not too shabby. Go Tigers! Class of '84

We have to remember, we are note recruiting 14 or 15 players this year...we are getting a FULL recruiting class.

I try not default to the pay players thing that UGA is doing I think... but I will say what I know. A recruit last year high on clemson with a mom who asked our coaches for money for his signature. Obviously it didn’t happen and he signed elsewhere specifically Athens. I honestly don’t know Kirby did anything but what I do know is we didn’t and he didn’t sign here.

One big difference is that top players from all over the nation are contacting Clemson wanting to play for us. While Dabo and coaches are expanding their recruiting, the nation is coming to us.

That is it in a nutshell.***
