Students of today will NEVER know: What were your hot spots?

18

May 2, 2023, 11:16 PM

What Clemson campus and city of Clemson hot spots, restaurants, attractions, etc. will today's students never know anything about?

My featured spots:

-Clemson House Dining Hall (Sunday brunch!)
-Clemson House Barbershop (go see Dennis or Joe and get straightened up!)
-Rockhoppers restaurant (esp for trivia night)
-Explorers restaurant/bar (Plutonium Wings)
-Sardis Den restaurant (All you can eat crab legs!)
-Western Sizzlin (when this place closed, we stopped winning National Championships... Just saying)
-Tiger Tails in Seneca (I bet current students would never believe this place existed so close to campus)... to be clear, this wasn't a place I frequented
-Beezers ($1 subs delivered to your dorm... before Grub Hub was a thing)
-The indoor track in Littlejohn Coliseum... that had a 100m that finished in the bathrooms. Lol!

Macs hamburger steak smothered in onions salad with french dressing, buttered toast and tea $1.25 or sometimes a BBQ sandwich (the dollar bill on the menu board that Moses Malone tipped Mac when he was on Clemson visit)
Red Carpet fried chicken and Longneck Bud
Walhalla Steakhouse ($1.99 for a steak with fries and grits!)
Capri's lasagna
Dan's hamburgers

Monday nights - my roommate and I would go to Hardee's for 2 burgers, fries, apple pie and drink for $1.04, then the Esso Club for a case of cold Bud and 2 bags of Taco flavored Dortos then over to our buds in Lever to watch Monday Night Football with Frank Gifford, Dandy Don & Howard Cosell, "Would you look at that Moon over War Memorial Stadium!"

1) The milkshakes at the P&A building.

2) The ‘stro’. The Astro Movie Theater. Can remember when the cost to view a movie was 99 cents. The person at the ticket booth had rolls of pennies and constantly handed back one as the customer handed over a dollar bill.

Card punch machines and the card reader at the computer center.
We would wait in line to have your cards run through the hopper, then have to wait for an hour or more just to find out you had a syntax error. I hated that place.

After about a month of doing the card reader thing, I got a password to access the computer screens and got back results within seconds. Also played games, like star trek, which we were not suppose to do (to much computing usage).

But we spent a lot of time in TTT and Sloan Street as well! Sad part for me is that I lived in two dorms at Clemson, and they are both gone now (Clemson House and Johnstone). Still remember that Peggy Caple could touch her palms to both sides of the Clemson House hallway at the same time (A lot of the Women's BB team lived on my floor). Good times indeed!

Re: Sorry to say I never experienced any of those

1

May 6, 2023, 12:21 AM

Neither did I...a '66 grad. Think Dan's was the main food source off campus, as it was very close to the tin cans. I lived off campus in a private home my middle two years, so only paid for lunch at the dining hall those years. On my limited food budget, I often dined on two lettuce and tomato sandwiches on toast for dinner from Dan's, which only cost 10 or 15 cents each at the time. Cannot believe how good and plentiful the food is in the dining hall now.

Someone mentioned Del Taco. Man I loved Del Taco and their Burrito Grande with onions back in the day. Way better and fresher in the 80's. I tried modern day Del Taco not long ago and it was more like Taco Bell. No where near as good as it once was.

Del Taco also served french fries...

which was an odd but tasty combination.

I usually got the platter with the rice and beans. That beef burrito was off the chain back then though. I guess under different ownership and costs cuts over the years it just kind of went down in quality with the ingredients.

-All you could eat pancakes during exams at the McDonalds that was near the ESSO. It was amazing watching some of the O-Lineman eat.
-Charlie T's lake front for $5 pitchers of Long Island Island Ice Teas and karaoke on Thursday nights.
How we made it home was a sheer miracle
-The Tackle Box to meet for night fishing tournaments on lake Hartwell with the local bass fishing clubs.
-Having a gate key to cut through the hog farm and come out by T. Ed Garrison Arena after games to bypass traffic.
-Tailgating as students in late 90's and early 2000s in Lot 4 right beside the walk entrance to the football facility with counterfeit parking passes we copied at the campus print shop. (I'm assuming statute of limitations has run its course)

Wasn't the snow in '72 the Thursday before Spring Break? I remember not being able to leave until Saturday and on Friday walking across campus getting into snowball fights with guys on the ledges of the Tin Cans, then ending with spending a memorable night at the Red Carpet!

All of these are great - here are a few I remember!

1

May 5, 2023, 3:41 PM

Explorers - and their hot wing waiver and Kubla Kahn with spicy ranch!

Los Amigos - I think there was a two story one on Issaquena

Hardees - fast, convenient, near the intramural fields

Bojangles <- I think when I stopped going, I single handedly put them out of business.

Rumors - I think 18 and up at the time....

After hours spot in the neighborhood - It started like a DJ at 2 am - Anyone remember that name?

The one spot near the cop station (abandoned now near old KFC). You could barely see the top of it and you had to drive down a steep bank. (It was sort of a club/dive bar). Changed names a TON!

Charlie T's across the lake!

Go Tigers!

building out in the intersection of 93 and 133 across from end of Bowman. Guess they wanted better traffic flow and got rid of it. What was there before Substation II?
