Still think next year likely runs through Kelly Bryant

Jan 4, 2018, 6:12 PM

Unless Hunter Johnson just comes on large, or unless Trevor Lawrence is just the biggest mutant to ever hit college football, does anybody see a likelihood where next year doesn't rest on Kelly Bryant?

No, KB did not throw well in the playoffs against Alabama. He also didn't have the arsenal of weapons at his disposal Deshaun Watson did. We need more explosiveness at the 2; we need a more classic jump-ball-winning 9-receiver; we need better play at the TE spot. I think we'll get all of that next year.

KB has also been compared to the likes of Jalen Hurts and JT Barrett - more athlete than QB. I'm not sure that's a fair comparison either. Those guys have some pretty limited ceilings as far as pure throwers - Barrett was about as good as he would ever get by the time he was a redshirt sophomore - and Hurts hasn't progressed a ton in the last two years.

KB, on the other hand, has improved dramatically every year he's been at Clemson, and he's a bigger, taller guy with more pocket presence than either guy. He was just rawer and played only one year in HS in a true passing offense...and he was terrible as a true frosh at Clemson. He was much better but still legitimately behind Nick Schuessler as our #3 last year as a true sophomore. Last year he made a big jump and became a very effective dual-threat QB with a very good command of the offense...he honestly just needs some improvement on the deep ball (which he has shown the arm strength and capability of making) and just a little fine-tuning on the underneath game. KB wasn't Watson but he was a very good QB this year with some holes in his game; if he eliminates those holes he'll become an elite QB.

Even if he doesn't, Bryant's still going to be a very effective QB, and I think the skill around him is a good notch better next year. Feaster and Etienne are coming on. Overton and Higgins are coming on. Amari Rodgers is coming on. We get Garrett Williams back at TE.

Mind, I could see a scenario where Hunter Johnson really emerges, especially after a year in the system. HJ is a major talent and with the experience and competition he got this year he could be the one making a leap. Or maybe Trevor Lawrence is indeed actually that true freshman phenom who is just so durn good he can somehow unseat a senior QB who won 12 games this year.

Still think KB is our #1 next year - legitimately. Just my own opinion. (And is that a bad thing?)

I doubt KB can beat The competition next year.KB has carried us as far as he is capable of and that’s not being degrading to him but his ability is at its peak in my opinion

You're spot on. I also think that whoever the qb that won the job this year was going to be overly critiqued. I graduated CURRENTLY in 2003 and I can honestly say that every qb on our current roster was more talented and highly thought of coming out of hs pre tahj Boyd. I remember how truly handicapped our offenses looked with everything in place except the qb. We need to be thankful as a fan base that we didn't sacrifice and wasted this defense based on qbs that were highly recruited out of hs. How would this look out on the recruiting trail showing players that even though you went to the cfp in a rebuilding year, going 12-2, that since you have unproven commodities thought to be all world, you will lose your job. Look at Bama right now. Tua was a 5 star recruit, higher ceiling than hurts. Who is the current qb right now? Just be it looks good coming out of a players hands doesn't equal leading us to the cup or the natty.

Yep this is KBs team and if not for that one play we could have beaten Bama. Idk why anyone would think we cannot beat them next year with KB.

Spot on about 17 WRs and TE plus RBs not as good blockers.

Jan 4, 2018, 6:37 PM

In ‘18 both RBs will block better plus Tee Higgins et al ...

If I know Dabo like I think I do, Bryant will start the first week no matter what happens in camp. Then we go from there. Dabo Would throw in a bad experienced QB way before he would a great inexperienced QB. Just ask DW4 and Cole Stoudt

I think common sense tells us that KB is the clear favorite

going into spring ball, and likely into the fall. I know there were multiple factors involved in our lack of offensive output against Bammy, and it certainly can't be blamed on KB. However, they, more so than anybody all year, exposed KB's weaknesses. Therefore, by no means is KB a lock. I expect a true, wide open competition at QB starting this spring. I would not be shocked at all to see HJ beat KB out by first game next fall. As for Trevor Lawrence, I believe the only thing that stands between him and the starting job is how quickly he absorbs enough of the offense to be effective and adjusts to the speed of the college game.

I stopped taking this post seriously when you complimented KBs pocket presence.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That's actually a very good point.

Jan 4, 2018, 7:31 PM

We should all be very thankful for the AWESOME job KB did leading this team to the number 1 seed in the playoffs, but "pocket presence"?? He must have been joking?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I have to agree... the one thing KB does NOT have

Jan 4, 2018, 8:24 PM [ in reply to Re: Still think next year likely runs through Kelly Bryant ]

is pocket presence. Pocket passers need a clock ticking in their heads, and Kelly does NOT have one.

IMO, Bryant doesn't need to be better than the other 2. He just needs to be good enough
to give this team a chance to win week in and week out. That's probably good enough for
our coaches. And when you have a top 3 defense, it's not like you have to be great at
QB against 75% of the teams in the Acc.
sad, but probably true.

I think all that can be summed up in much less words...

Jan 4, 2018, 7:27 PM

Kelly Bryant will start, as he should.

Competition is open, at every position, as always.

KB will start. Not 100% sure he will finish.

There remains the possibility, in the off-season, that he requests or him and the coaches reach an understanding....That is, QB may not be the best long-term, career-type position for KB.

Hat off to Kelly Bryant

Jan 4, 2018, 8:17 PM

KB did a phenomenal job of getting the Tigers as far as he did. Unfortunately, I don't think he's the guy who can "finish the deal" for us. I would, however, love to see him at slot receiver, or maybe as a small TE, with some occasional appearances at Wildcat.

thanks again, Kelly B... I was a doubter, but you made me a believer!

If KB is the starter next year, we will win the ACC and make it back to the CFP where Bama will be waiting at some point and beat our ### again. We did not have an elite OL this season and we will not have one next season either. To beat Bama with a run first QB and O you must have an elite OL. Bama dared KB to beat them with his arm and he just couldn’t do it. It simply is not his skill set.

Since we won’t have an elite OL, HJ or TL should be the only options the coaches look at to decide who starts and the decision needs to be made as soon as possible so as much time as possible can be spent working to get the winner ready. That way by the time we make the playoffs we have an elite passing QB that now has a whole season’s experience under his belt and gives us the best chance to beat Bama cause we will not run on them.
