I put little into these star rankings. The raters cannot know what is in the heart and thereby not know what could be. If my memory serves me correctly, CDS has signed a few low stars and a notable no stars that became All-Americans. This staff sees what might be and does not focus on what is. It is good coaching that takes them from the us to the can be. In other words our coaches are willing to invest in the player.

I don’t think any staff can see every game played by every school in America every year. Not enough time or resources. I don’t think every player at every high school in America makes it to the camps and evaluations that play a huge part in the star ratings. I do think the coaches play the percentages in using the ratings to narrow down their ability to fill needs. But after that the coaches probably use a network of trusted people - coaches, alumni, fans, acquaintances - to try and find the kids not really clued in to the evaluation process. Can you build an entire roster off of that? No way.

Since 2000 only one team without at least 3 top ten recruiting classes won the national championship every year, two of them only had 2 top 10 classes, is in 2016 and Auburn 2010, the other 18 national champions had at least 3 top classes the previous 4 years. Stars matter if you wanna win championships. We are not special with our low star guys that thrives, Isaiah, Hunter, Grady…. All teams have those stories and they are great, but if you wanna win national championships, 4 and 5 stars are necessary for the foundation/majority of your classes.

Oklahoma was the one champion who didn’t have at least 2, but back then was when recruiting rankings were just getting started and not a huge investment and just gaining interest.

You want to pay attention to offers. For example, if Alabama offers a kid they are probably pretty good. Now, it doesn't necessarily mean that because every staff misses on prospects but a school like that pretty much has the pick of the litter so to speak and you can also bet that their staff under Saban does their homework on a kid.
What is going on now isn't just we are getting low-star kids but kids deeper down on the recruiting boards meaning the staff felt they had a shot with a prospect that they thought was better than that position but the staff wasn't able to get them to sign. Sometimes you get lucky and your "second choice" ends up being pretty doggone good, ie ETN.
This year we didn't get the top kid we wanted at DL, RB, or WR (to some extent) just off the top of my head.
Go back and look at the Clemson recruiting classes and stars from 2000 up til now. It's easy to do on Rivals and was just looking at them yesterday. You forget just how bad our recruiting was until Dabo got going.
Again, stars don't mean everything but I bet it's safe to say that there is a direct correlation between recruiting class rankings and wins.

Only rabid fans and the geeks that rank the kids are excited about "stars". Coaches are excited about how big, fast, strong and tall the players are and most importantly how much they can grow and develop their bodies with proper food and training.

Bad take! Stars do matter as pointed out in previous posts. Can’t fill a roster with 5 heart players!!! Yes 5 stars don’t pan out. If it makes you feel better about filling our class out with 3 stars, then pretend I agree with you.

We were not playing well until that play. It really turned the whole game around for us and made getting something to eat and drink in Wake Forest afterward much more enjoyable!

Stars are important but aren't the whole story. Good evaluation of 3 star players can really help. Clemson has found some nice under the radar guys. But Clemson wouldn't have made the playoffs 6 straight times without the 4-5 Stars.

I think the only real stars apply to offensive linemen. Scouts use a more in depth critique when evaluating O-Lonemen. Most of Clemson’s recent successful seasons had 4 and 5 star linemen peppered across the from with serviceable 2-3 stars.Also the pieces have to fit and they have to gel ( know what one another is going to do before the do it)!

Nah...stars are a huge factor. If we could only choose who we want in the top 100 players and nobody else in the nation we would. We just can't them all. We're going for some plan B's now. Like you said though, no telling how good they become. Some of these guys are still growing or are late bloomers. Some just didn't go to camps, went to small schools, and flew under the radar.

This is also a bit misleading. Take 2019 for instance (only year I could find stats for)
30 5 star players.
1328 3 star players.
5 star players make the NFL at a MUCH higher rate.

Exactly, there’s only about 25-30 5 stars every year. Higher % of getting drafted, especially higher rounds
