They have to come out eventually for food and water and I found dealing with them outside the hose preferable to having them rot in the attic.

I don't live in the city, but I do live in a neighborhood with close neighbors, so I don't want to shoot .22LR rounds that are obviously from a rifle which would alarm everyone nearby. I bought a pellet rifle and used that for a while and found it fairly effective, but not as efficient as I'd like. .22 rat shot works, but only at close range.

I set up a killing field about 75' from my kitchen doorway from which I have an elevated view of an open area with sandy soil and no rocks. The area has several pine trees scattered around it. In front of the largest diameter pine tree I stuck a pole on the ground and from the pole hung a squirrel cake cage with a squirrel cake in it - it hangs about 4' off the ground. Birds peck at the squirrel cake which causes seeds and corn kernels to litter the ground underneath. Squirrels love an easy meal, so they soon find the bait and the area becomes their favorite lunch spot.

I use CCI sub-sonic quiet .22LR rounds and a Mossberg lend-lease WWII training rifle with scope zeroed exactly on the killing field. Standing at my kitchen doorway and bracing on the open door, the view of the area is just right and I can shoot up in the trees at about a 45 degree angle or down at the killing field at a 30 degree angle. The round is fairly quiet and doesn't alarm the neighbors, but it's hard on the squirrels.....

The strange thing is that the round is so slow, you hear the rifle report and then hear the round hit the squirrel, whereas with a normal supersonic round you'd never hear the round hit the target.
